View Full Version : Should I neuter my dog?

He's just about 7 months old now. The vet has recommended it. I've been researching it the general consensus seems to be it's better to do so. He's an English Bulldog, pictures available by clicking my sig banner, and his breed is especially prone to testicular cancer and of course by neutering him it'll pretty much eliminate that worry. However, I've also read in a few places that doing it could actual increase the chances of other types of cancer such as urinary tract or prostate. I really wanted to stud him out once he's old enough but of course my biggest concern is for his health and well being.
Oh and he has started to "mark" all over the place outside and whenever we bring him into Petsmart if we don't keep an eye on him. But other than that he really isn't doing anything that annoying or disgusting. He's humping but really not all that much.

I work for with dogs and deall with them being altered everyday. bulldogs can absolutely live cancer free after being altered. From what I know, they will def. have a better shot at living longer if neutered.

The marking and humping is more than usual being an unaltered dog. i would actually be concerned if he wasnt doing those tings

Yes, save yourself the headache. They heal up way faster than you'd think, and they aren't miserable during that process. And of course afterwards they are right as rain, at least in their lil' doggie brains, like nothing ever happened. It's worth it.

Yeah. The marking he does constantly when he's outside. He doesn't do it at all inside except at Petsmart. The humping not so much, he might have one humping episode a day. He hasn't been aggressive towards other dogs.

Yeah I was concerned he'd be "different' afterwards. I remember my brother's dog was neutered and he was lazy and disinterested all the time after it was done. So that was part of my concern.

Yeah, they just mark where they smell other gods, so inside of Petsmart is normal. The only change you should see would be him not humping other dogs and being overly excited.
No you shouldn't. Let the vet do it.

Is this Bull Dog going to be show dog? Is he "worthy" of being bred? By that I mean what would the Bull Dog world gain by you breeding this dog? Has he been health tested? Have you researched his blood line to see what if any health issues are present? Have you considered who you would breed to and if so are they going to place the puppies or you? Sorry I take breeding quite seriously and believe that you should only breed when you have a long term goal for your breed soooo yes neuter him!
