ok, this is something thats been bugging me. This is the North Carolina quarter:

North Carolina - First in Flight..ok

Here is the Ohio quarter:

http://www.theus50.com/images/state-quarters/ohio-quarter.jpg

Birthplace of Aviation?

See, the Wright Brothers were born in Ohio, but they moved to North Carolina where they did the first flight

But i don't like the fact that both states are taking credit for them...I think only one should! Its bullshit that two states that aren't close to eachother are taking credit for the flight. One must choose

My personal opinion is that North Carolina takes the credit. Its where it happens, not where the people are from. If a great scientist born in Germany makes breakthroughs in America..those are American breakthroughs my friend

Ohio needs to find something else to be proud of!

Ohio gets the Wright Brothers

North Carolina gets Flight, which is the far more impressive claim.

I do think the Ohio quarter should have something else on it (maybe football pioneer Paul Brown?), especially since North Carolina's already says "First in Flight" and came first.

oh and the wiki page has a whole thing on this controversy. I thought this was something i thought of while looking at my quarters at the soda machine

Ohio/North Carolina rivalry

North Carolina 50 State Quarter features the famous first flight photo of the 1903 Wright Flyer I at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina

Ohio 50 State Quarter features the 1905 Wright Flyer III built and flown in Ohio, in another famous photo from Huffman Prairie

The U.S. states of Ohio and North Carolina both take credit for the Wright brothers and their world-changing inventions — Ohio because the brothers developed and built their design in Dayton, and North Carolina because Kitty Hawk was the site of the first flight. With a spirit of friendly rivalry, Ohio adopted the slogan "Birthplace of Aviation" (later "Birthplace of Aviation Pioneers", recognizing not only the Wrights, but also John Glenn and Neil Armstrong, both Ohio natives), while North Carolina has adopted the slogan "First In Flight".

Each state features these phrases on their standard-issue state automobile license plates, and both states also included an image of a Wright Flyer on their respective 50 state quarters designs.[75][76]

The site of the first flights in North Carolina is preserved as Wright Brothers National Memorial, while their Ohio facilities are part of Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park. As the positions of both states can be factually defended, and each played a significant role in the history of flight, neither state truly has an exclusive claim to the Wrights' accomplishment. While speaking at a presentation at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, Neil Armstrong joked that there is enough credit for both states: North Carolina provided the right winds and soft landing material and Dayton provided the know-how, resources and engineering.

It seems that the quarter is saying it's the birthplace of some people who were invovled in "firsts" as far as aviation... pretty broad claim to fame.

I would just put Drew Carey on there myself.

I don't know anything about Cleveland but his show.

well, it seems Ohio is not taking credit for being first in flight but just for being the birth place of the guys... I would say eh, who cares if I didn't just see the other statement that not both of them were born there.
Then Indiana should have a coin taking credit for half of the brothers.

North Dakota has to be the worst place ever...i know nothing about it and never met anyone from there. I can't even think of a movie that ever took place there. Is it cold there? Its near canada..i don't even know

And if paulisded sees it he shouldn't feel Dakota self-loathing cuz atleast South Dakota quarter as Mt. Rushmore..a very respectable national landmark and a very appropriate and proud quarter

Doesn't Fargo take place there? I think Deadwood is about that state too.

They should put a Lakota Sioux on their quarter- and give all those shitty quarters to Pine Ridge Reservation, poorest land in North America. Something to be proud of!
