I was hanging out with a friend in the local pub yesterday when Angie but the rolling stones came on the radio. I made a comment on song because that was the third time i heard it yesterday. He asked me what song it was and i said "Angie". Then he said the craziest thing "Oh; who sings it?" and he wasn't kidding. I told him that it it was the stones. he gave me a non-committal shrug which forced me to ask if he had heard of the rolling stones. He of course said yes, but said that he doesn't listen to them really and wasn't too familiar with the catalog.

I guess that one could have fallen through the cracks of his audio experience since he doesn't listen to classic rock stations. So after Angie, i put $5 in the jukebox and played some tunes. I made sure one as a stones song, so i picked what i thought was the most recognizable, and went with Sympathy for the Devil.

When it came on I asked if he knew the song. He listened then said no. I didn't let him off the hook though and wouldn't let the conversation turn away from the song. Halfway through i had to give him the title. Again telling me that he's never heard it.

Is this even fucking possible?!

I'm not a giant stones fan but Jesus! So I asked him who his favorite classic rock band was and he gave me the ridiculous answer of Guns N' Roses. I told him that they didn't count. I gave him the framework of 1960-1975. He couldn't come up with an answer and asked me to give him a list and he'd pick. "No," I said "you have to know one friggin classic rock band". The one name he could come up with was the lame answer of U2.

I've known this kid for 29 years. We've never agreed on music (outside of our mutual appreciation for Weird Al) , and actually I don't think I've ever had an in depth talk about music with him. And now, I don't know if i can truely relate to this guy anymore.

i wouldnt be so shocked, during a corporate retreat we had to do one of those goofy get to know each other create a song, which we happened to do to thetune of imagine, none of the young black supervisors knew the song.

i remember this kid incollege loved korn, hated rap music, he went on on how much he loved their song wicked...i laughed and told him it was an ice cube song, i could see the dread in his face.

i bet there are millions of black women who think boys to men wrote yesterday.

Wow, in "that's life: the forum"? Cause he doesn't know the fucking stones?
I got one for ya, a relative of mine loves Eric Clapton, even played "cocaine" on his guitar, i asked him if he could play any Led Zeppelin songs, he said, "Who?!"

I would know Paint It Black but only because I watched Tour Of Duty when I was a kid. They are a recognizable band though even if they are before my time.

why would you assume your friend knows rolling stones songs if he doesn't like classic rock? i hate when people imply that someone's stupid or ignorant for not knowing or enjoying the same music (or movies, tv shows, etc.) that they do.

i'm sure there are songs that your friend likes that you've never heard of. it's not a big deal. to each, his own.

i probably woulda gone for start me up over anything else. i think that he should have recognized that song at least. a lot of people just don't pay any attention to classic rock & don't like it. they don't get the nostalgia. in college i wanted my best friend to go with me to bowie's 50th birthday thing at roseland & she would go because "there were going to be a lot of old people there." i had never been so disappointed in her.

Why all the snobbery involving these shitty bands?
I know you're trying to imitate Ron and his rant about Mooch not knowing some Beatles songs.
Maybe some people aren't obsessed with listening to half-assed 'pop' bands from decades past.
In Mooch's case he claimed to be a Beatles fan, so it's a bit different.

I think the friend said that he at least knew who the Stones were, and listened to the Stones. Kinda implies being a fan, kinda doesn't.

I'm not much better. I do believe that the Stones have a unique enough sound that I'd probably recognize their stuff even if I'm not particularly familiar with it though. Other than AC/DC and Black Sabbath (and honestly I'm really not even that into them) I'm pretty clueless about any music before 1980.

I didn't hear that rant. I work during the day nd don't get to hear the show much these days. And we're not talking about not knows some songs, he wasn't too sure if he's heard of the rolling stones in the first place.

I can't really feel sorry for you chiefly because I grew up listening to classical music (family thing) and NOBODY born after 1968 besides me gives a shit about it. I know some people exist who are below the age of 40 who likes classical, but I haven't met 'em yet.

And don't get me started on how many people I know who have no clue who George Carlin is... :wallbash:

I enjoy Classical music and I am under 40. (And we sort of met at the Big Ass Bash a couple years ago ... but Missy was doing more of the talking at that table than I was, seeing as how it came at a time when I'd been taking an extended hiatus from the board after a huge drama-rama blowup that got me sick.)

I did an 8-year stint as a chorister, so I've performed vocal pieces by Handel, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Mozart and Bach. My high school alma mater is set to a Beethoven piece for strings.

Although the stuff I like best might more accurately be described as "Baroque," I don't see why Classical gets such a negative from younger people.

Nah, meant to be tongue in cheek really.

When I was taking music comp and theory courses in college I had this really great professor who taught electronic music theory and digital and analog studio technique and application. In classes and when we hung out outside of class we would constantly be listening to guys like Stockhausen and Schoenberg along with other avant-garde composers like Steve Reich, John Zorn, George Crumb, Joeseph Schwantner, Krzysztof Penderecki and others of their ilk. I developed a deep appreciation for their music and their recording techniques.
