So, Jeff and I slack on our tiny front lawn. We don't have a mower, just a weed wacker, and I was out there attacking it with the weed wacker over the weekend and cleaning up branches, but I guess it was still a little long.

So, today, we notice some dude w/ a mower mowing our lawn. Jeff goes outside and the guy says "Don't worry about it, he (our neighbor) took care of it".

Now, this is one of the neighbors we are friendly with... he did see me using the weed wacker a few months ago and said his lawn place does it for $15 and I said I'd get the info and never did.

THE DILEMMA: Do I go over and offer him the $15? This is a little WEIRD because who just sends over someone to cut your lawn w/o asking first??!! Jeff says no and is weirded out that the guy would assume to have our lawn cut. I think it's weird but feel like I should offer. AngrySister says no, it was rude for him to send someone to cut our lawn w/o asking.

I agree with AngrySister. Someone doing anything to your property without permission is wrong, maybe even illegal. It's not that much of a crime but if you see him, bring it up and say thanks, but we'll take care of our own yard.

Do you guys need a lawnmower? Because I have one. It blows bubbles!

I think this is a tough call...

The property values can actually go down if your lawn looks like shit...so he was doing it for selfish reasons.

My advice is, get a small used lawnmower off of cragslist and just mow it every couple of weeks... It will make your neighbors happy and your house will look better.

It was indeed weird for him to do. Even to the point that if you wanted him arrested, it could probably happen. He trespassed, even by allowing his agent to trespass, and tampered with something you own... albeit to beautify it, but beautify it by his standards. He raped your lawn.

Of course, I'm not recommending that course, nor do I believe you would pursue it.

I'm guessing his heart was in the right place, and I'd go over and gently demand he take the money for it, while explaining youd rather he didnt do that again. Then I'd go out and get a push mower and remember to take care of it myself.

I dont have a lawn, but if my neighbor decided to wash my car without my permission, Id be upset.

Yes, I am guessing he was prob thinking (their lawn looks crappy I will just do it).

It doesn't totally look like shit, we actually planted flowers recently and I attacked it again w/ the weedwacker.

This is awkward.

I dunno though. This guy lost his cat a few months ago, and it was missing for 2 months, and I found it and brought it to the vet and paid for them to initially treat until I could get in touch w/ him. He paid it back right away... there was a time where the garbagemen weren't going to take something we left out front, and he slipped them a $20 to do it. He wouldn't take the $20 when I tried to give it to him, he said because I saved his cat.

So I dunno where the intentions were at w/ the lawn...

If he says "I'm sure we can work SOMETHING out" and starts leering suggestively you should attack him with the weed whacker.

if you see him, ask him if he did that, and if he said yes, then say "thank you... we've been meaning to get a new lawnmower, but it wasnt in the budget yet. next year."

get a cheap lawnmower, and cut your grass.

thanks and appreciation goes a lot farther than "dont touch my grass" or not even aknowledging the work done.

Yeah, I'm DEF not going the "don't touch my grass" route. We are on friendly terms. I guess I could say "I should have got their # from you!" or some crap.

We had a neighborhood kid doing it who stopped showing up.

So I guess if I see him outside I say it, but don't walk over and announce myself at his door offering cashola. So uncomfortable.

10-21-2008, 08:42 AM
you said you are friendly with the neighbor. he probably saw you struggling with the weedwhacker and thought he was doing you a favor by helping out.

Sure he offered to have it done for money previously, but with you not taking advantage of that offer for weeks I would think he understood you had no interest in doing so... so he probably did it to be nice or just to make the neighborhood look nicer.

I know I have been tempted to mow neighbors lawns while I was at it... the same way I was hoping some would just mow mine when I could not get to it for a few weeks.

Don't worry about paying him, tell him thanks when you see him and if you have about 80 bucks just get one of those push blades instead of an electric or gas lawnmower, it seems you don't have all that much to mow.

AngrySister says no, it was rude for him to send someone to cut our lawn w/o asking.

when i lived at home, i used to cut my neighbors grass all the time. she was elderly, lived alone, had little money, and her son would come home to cut her grass maybe 2x a year.

i think this was an act of kindness, since he saw you out there with the weedwacker attempting to cut it, but only had a weed wacker.

if you just never cut it, i could fully understand.

then again, im just a nice guy.

Relevant to me on the weirdness factor: How bad did your lawn look? If it looked like a lawn that could use a mowing but not all that terrible it's really weird. If the grass was so long the house looked abandoned it's still really weird, but a bit more understandable. This is a tough one to say, this guy is either really nice and figured that he would help you guys out, or he's Samuel L Jackson in that movie about the bad neighbor weird. I say no payment, and wait to see if he mounts giant spotlights that shine into your house.

My B/F has lawn mowing OCD. At our old place our next door neighbor NEVER mowed his back yard. The front was always done, but he left the back (the sad part is he had a teenage son too). When ever my b/f was mowing our back yard he would just do his cause he hated how it looked and all the weeds would go to seed and end up in our yard.
Now that we have moved we have driven past the old place and it is painfully obvious that they guy who bought it either doesn't have a mower or just doesn't care. It annoys my b/f beyond belief. That weed free lawn was his obsession/pride & joy.
I wouldn't sweat it, my b/f never expected anything from the neighbor, it just made him feel better when it looked good.

If he wont take cash to me the thing to do is to get him some kind of gift card for $20 or whatever.

That way it looks like a nice gesture on your part for him doing something nice for you and its not as if you are paying him off for cutting your lawn.

Just tell him you appreciate what he did and give him the gift card - usually a restaurant works best from what i have done before.

I think it was a very neighborly thing to do..

Believe me, your husband will be demanding you double time it over to the man's house to at the very least give him a hand job when he shows up with his snow blower after a two foot snow fall..

Imo you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, just accept it as a favor and do something nice in return, that's what being a good neighbor is all about, not calling the cops on one another for inane bull shit..

Now if he starts bitching about the car engine hanging from the tree then he's just a petty asshole and should be dealt with accordingly..
I suggest fire bombing his home, vehichle and place of business..

I have a similar experience. My neighbor's wife died of cancer. His last kid moved out of the house the same year. He was taking it pretty hard. He spent his weekend up at his cabin and would fish. Those weekends ended up getting longer up until 1 week - 2 weeks at a time.

I felt bad for him as he was probably spending time at the cabin to get away from the sorrow in his house.

I mowed his lawn thinking he was at his cabin. He wasn't. He came home while I was mowing and said verbatim:

"Is my lawn getting too ugly for you to look at?"

I was speechless. I really wanted to help him. I said that I thought he was up at the lake and was trying to help.

I will never do it again.

Don't pay the guy. He should leave your lawn alone.

Just move ... your neighbors are weirder than imaginable. You live in Twighlight Zone, NY

zip= 00000

srsly though ... I'd go over laughing... just keep a real good sense of humor about it. Try to get the biggest funny wtf?? attitude you can before you approach them. Even laugh when you're asking about it.

On a funny neighbor note...
There's a gay couple across the street that is openly fucking angry with absolutely everyone on my street - they've preempted everyone with their own bitterness. They were one of the only people on the street to put out a sign for Obama. So.. they've had a war going on with the younger guys that live next to me and openly tell them to fuck themselves when they see them on the street. So the younger guys just put a McCain sign on their front lawn. My wife and I are hysterical. They haven't had a political opinion in their lives.

I think they suck too but that's funny.

Oh- btw... my favorite line from one of them was "I don't get it... the guy just tells me to fuck off. All we did was someone was at one of my parties and blocked his driveway"

My dogs' piss is lethal to my grass. What should I do barring killing my dogs?

Yeah, the ol' highly concentrated stream of nitrogen in the form of urea. Believe it or not, the best way to do avoid this is to take a hose and wash down the spot that he just pissed in. It disperses the piss to where it won't kill anything.

And although this does work, I don't expect you to do it. Nobody ever does.

I know one guy who trained his dog to go in one corner of his town house back yard, and every year he would only have to fix that one spot.

Other than this, be prepared to keep raking the spots that brown out and die, and constantly reseeding.

Happy piss-washing!

In the south, especially here in alabama things are different. I guess it goes without saying. Anyway alot of the times if we are cutting our own grass and see a neighbors grass that needs to be cut we just go over there and cut their grass also. We more or less just do it to be polite and help each other out. If for some reason you dont want someone to occasionally do polite things for you, you should tell him not to do it or send anyone to do it again. Its not that big a deal. I cut my neighbors yard alot. Just as a friendly gesture. Mainly older neighbors or neighbors who are outta town alot working or on holiday. Thats just my two cents.
