I got an early retail copy last Friday, and this has to be one of the best games I've played so far. Since Bethesda took it over (Oblivion fame), it's a good shift from the old top down few Diablo-esque view, to the First/Third person game. They did a good job with the game, graphics are absolutely amazing, story is good and controls are responsive. The VATS system is a welcomed addition.
This game is pretty much if Oblivion met Mad Max.

The original Fallout was a top down RPG game(ala Diablo) set in post nuclear world and was very well recieved
Fallout 3 is still set in a post nuclear world but is a first person shooter RPG, Im looking forward to it and it seems to be getting good reviews from the VG press

So how is this different than other shooters out there? I'm way behind the curve on games, but I loved the first 2 in this series and was bummed when I heard it was being turned into a shooter. The things mentioned here make it sound a lot more interactive than that, though...help me understand!

It's like an RPG/shooter combo.

For example, there is a "Karma" system in the game... based on the way you interact with people, they treat you differently... there are situations in the game where you need, say, information on a computer... you can do what the NPC asks you to do to get the info, or you can shoot him in the head and take it yourself... but if you shoot him in the head, the residents of the town can turn on you and try to kill you every time you come back
TheMojoPin

Interesting, so there's still interaction as opposed to just shooting. Is it a "free roam" game or does it dump you where you're "supposed" to go like most shooters?

I only played it for a few hours last night, but it is definitely "free roam" with a lot of quests/sidequests. There is a lot of interaction, it's definitely not a straight up shooter. It's very similar to the game Mass Effect in that respect.
You walk around towns and talk to people who will give you missions and quests (like, deliver a letter to so and so), again, you have different answers you can choose for the questions to come up with different reactions/results. Right now I have about 3 active quests, but am exploring the "wasteland" main map area to find cool shit like abandoned schools, shops etc.
I don't like straight up shooters like Gears or Halo, and I really like this game.

I relented and got the game, breaking my video game fasting. I got it on Steam because I don't like cluttering up my place with unneccesary shit like DVD covers and having to hold onto it so I have the activation code if I ever wanna reinstall it some years later.
Easy to get on steam, wanna get rid of it, delete it it'll always be on ur account with Steam forever so you'll never need to rebuy and just DL it again. Automatically updates it too.
Also, I have a shitty old TV that wouldn't do the game justice on 360.

I'll put it this way. The game is so complicated with all the things you do and can do and stats to improve that I am discouraged to play because there's too much for my brain to handle in one sitting.
That usually means it's going to be excellent.
Just out of curiosity why get the game thru steam? from what I can see the price is the same, whats the advantage if any?

Exactly. plus Steam has its own friends lists and features for multiplayer games similar to Live and the PSN. It automatically checks and updates all of your games as well. I haven't played any of the Half-Life games in a long time but they are all fully updated.
I forgot how intimidating Fallout games are at first. There is so much to do, so much to explore. It takes me a while to get into it.
Interesting, so there's still interaction as opposed to just shooting. Is it a "free roam" game or does it dump you where you're "supposed" to go like most shooters?
This is pretty much the first two Fallout games with a first person perspective. You can go anywhere you want as soon as you are out of the vault. You can immediately go on a death march in Super-Mutant territory if you like. It has the VATS system so there is still a turn based element. You can pick of enemies limb by limb. You can talk your way through most problems, or sneak around pickpocketing.
This is like 85% Fallout RPG and 15% shooter.

It might be hard to tell since I doubt anyone has gotten close to the end yet, but how feasible is it to play as a mele only character? I had a great time playing through Fallout 2 without using a single bullet, at least for the main character. I remember hitting a guy so hard with a sledgehammer that he slid backwards across the ground for a good 10-15 seconds. The only problem was that the final boss was impossible to beat on your own. I kept breaking his arms and legs without doing a single point of damage.

I got Bioshock on PC too but lucky for me it worked well. HOWEVER, and this is mostly why I feel stupid for getting Fallout 3 on PC, is that just one month ago I bought Mass Effect on PC. The thing would crash randomly when it loaded anything. I had to save after I did every little thing in the game to progress through. Then I get to the part where I have to drive into the Conduit........ and it crashes every single time. That was about 20-30 minute from the end for those who didn't play it. I had to go through 6 different older Nvidia drivers to find one that worked.
That I turned around and chose to go through this again shows how big an idiot I am.

Yeah, the first/third-person views are exactly the same as they were in Oblivion.
And the glitch that I run into every once in a while is going along then jumping forward like I was online and my connection messed up for a second. It's kinda dizzying in a game that already gets me a little motion sick.

I love this game.
I never knew this Fallout series on PC but I played oblivion and became obsessed with it. I got to 95%, something came up and months passed before I could play it again. By then I was too into NHL08 and SKATE and COD4 that I never found the time to get back into it to finish it because when I went to play it I couldn't remember how to play it. Too many custom weapons, spells etc...
I got so many other games I want to play and so little time to play them but I don't even turn them on because I think about this game all day at work.... What can I do with that... I'll go there and talk to so and so ...
It's the only time other than Oblivion that I remember daydreaming about.
I loved Bioshock and Oblivion and now I got both in one.
And btw the graphics are as good as you're gonna get for this typa game. It's a different style but the detail and AI is very sharp. It may not look as good up front as a Assassin's creed but that's a compromise they made to produce the miles of draw distance.

I tried that. I tried every fucking Nvidia driver they've released over the last 2 years. i tried shutting down every non-essential background function. I tried reinstalling the game. I tried contacting Bethesda for support two days ago and they still haven't gotten back to me.
I'm at the point where if Bethesda doesn't help me out today, I am demanding a refund from Steam tomorrow. Which will be a pain in my fucking ass since they say they don't offer refunds. I'm willing to go to a lawyer on the principle. I'm sick and tired of being sold non-functioning products.

I just did this quest last night. Some of the people I asked said they would move out of the tower instead or something, Tenpenny let the ghouls in and then later on ROY FUCKING KILLED HIM! I would have rather done it myself, I hear you get good karma for it anyway. Oh well, he was an asshole anyway, I just wanted to take his stuff.

This one of my disappoints about this so far.............spoiler tags on!
Talon Mercs, these bastards start following me and shooting when ever I fast travel, I kill them all, search them, find there is a contract out on my life for being to good a guy, So I stumble over Talons HQ, I kill everyone of the bastards and there boss search the whole place to find out who put the hit on me an nada kind of sucked I hope something opens up later to continue this

I did a little of that Internet searching to find out that you can find evidence that the guards are going to raid the rebels and kill them. So I found the evidence and showed it to the Overseer who stepped down and made Amata the Overseer. Then I was asked to leave because some people still don't like me for trying to stay alive at the beginning of the game.

The main storyline is actually pretty short and once you finish the final storyline mission the game ends, but there's hundreds of hours of side quests you can do at any pace you like. If you ever played Morrowind or Oblivion, it's basically like that... enormous expansive environments that take a looooong time to fully explore.

Incidentally I've been playing Mass Effect and haven't really started playing Fallout 3 yet. I keep going back to the point where you can adjust your TAG and S.P.E.C.I.A.L. skills... I can't decide what I want to stay with.
I think I'm gonna try to get Intelligence and Agility to level 9 and perception to level 6/7. I know I'm gonna want to use bullets, hack terminals, and pick locks. Also the 18 skill points each level up is pretty nice.

I finally decided to do something I didn't want to do: I installed Fallout 3 on my laptop. I don't have much HD space on it so I will have to delete it as soon as I am finished and waste one of the few installs Securom allows me. But, despite having a slower processor, slower video card and running Vista my laptop runs Fallout 3 fine. I can walk two steps in the wasteland without the game crashing. Unfortunately the setting are really dialed down so it doesn't look nearly as beautiful as it did the little time I had it running on my regular system. But in a couple days I have already progressed farther than I did in two weeks before. It's great, but nowhere near worth the aggravation I went through.

I finished this tonight. it was really an incredible game. The world is so immersive and addictive. I wish I could have enjoyed this earlier and on my regular computer. This was unquestionably my worst experience in trying to get a game to run. That still really tainted everything. But still its an incredible game when it works.
A couple things bugged me about the ending:
First of all it was very brief. Nothing about any of the characters I met, the places I went to, the things I did other than the Lincoln Memorial? Really?
Oh yeah, and it's really fucking cheap to have Fawkes standing right next to you to the end and have him refuse to turn on the purifier for the most irrelevant of reasons. Again, really? I can send Lyons in to her death but I can't send Fawkes in and have no one die? Very stupid and cheap.

Why if you let whats her name do it can you not continue the game? Plus, I never had a dog so why am a walking away with a dog? That said, I want to go back and keep the virus and see what happens at the end.

The dog is Dogmeat. He's an available character in the game. I didn't get him but he's located somewhere near Minefield. Dogmeat was in Fallout 1 and 2. I don't know he shows up in all endings even if you don't get him.

I guess I'll give this another playthrough using a different style. It's going to be frustrating after I played through as a good guy and then hit level 20 as evil. Now I have to balance it out so I don't have to do the bad guy all the way through and try to make up for my evil ways before level 20.

Just give the guy outside of Megaton or Rivet City a crapload of purified waters before you hit 20, and you'll get back up to Good status. How did you get Evil by 20? The Tranquility Lane part?

there should be 1 DLC a month for the next 3 months, with the final DLC allowing you to go past level 20. Which is the one I'm seriously waiting for.
I refuse to continue playing the game without being able to level up. So I quit playing until I'm allowed to level past 20.
I actually started over with a bad karma character. :devil2:

Operation: Anchorage, it's the first of three pieces of DLC planned for the title. It'll offer new quests, items, and content for the title, and can be yours for 800 Microsoft Points (£6.80) come its release on January 27.
Here's the official description of the three pieces of DLC.:
Operation: Anchorage. Enter a military simulation and fight in one of the greatest battles of the Fallout universe - the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska from its Chinese Communist invaders. An action-packed battle scheduled for release in January.
The Pitt. Journey to the industrial raider town called The Pitt, located in the remains of Pittsburgh. Choose your side. Scheduled for release in February.
Broken Steel. Join the ranks of the Brotherhood of Steel and rid the Capital Wasteland of the Enclave remnants once and for all. Continues the adventure past the main quest. Scheduled for release in March.

Bethesda Softworks Announces Creation Kit and
First Downloadable Content for Fallout 3
Editor to be Available in December; Downloadable Content coming for January, February, and March
November 25, 2008 (ROCKVILLE, MD) – Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax Media company, today announced plans to make both its editor and downloadable content available for its award-winning game, Fallout® 3 in the coming weeks. The official editor for Fallout 3, called the G.E.C.K. (Garden of Eden Creation Kit), will be available for free download in December and will allow Games for Windows® users to create and add their own content to the game. In addition, the first official downloadable content, Operation: Anchorage, will be available exclusively for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Games for Windows® in January, and more downloadable content coming in February and March.
"We've always seen the original world of Fallout 3 as a foundation for even more content. Some created by us, and a lot more created by users," said Todd Howard, game director for Fallout 3. "It's fun to create your own character, but it can be equally fun to create your own adventures. We can't wait to see what the community does with the G.E.C.K."
The release of the G.E.C.K. provides the community with tools that will allow players to expand the game any way they wish. Users can create, modify, and edit any data for use with Fallout 3, from building landscapes, towns, and locations to writing dialogue, creating characters, weapons, creatures, and more.
Three downloadable content packs will be coming to Xbox 360 and Games for Windows Live starting in January that will add new quests, items, and content to Fallout 3.
* Operation: Anchorage. Enter a military simulation and fight in one of the greatest battles of the Fallout universe – the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska from its Chinese Communist invaders. An action-packed battle scheduled for release in January.
* The Pitt. Journey to the industrial raider town called The Pitt, located in the remains of Pittsburgh. Choose your side. Scheduled for release in February.
* Broken Steel. Join the ranks of the Brotherhood of Steel and rid the Capital Wasteland of the Enclave remnants once and for all. Continues the adventure past the main quest. Scheduled for release in March.

I have no idea what just happened in my game. I start playing from the beginning and get to the part where I have to go to the supermarket where, as I approach, there is a green explosion over the building and the ground is littered with Alien ammo. As I round the corner a raider turns and kills me with one shot (I had full health). I reload and approach again, this time there are a lot of raiders in the parking lot and when I kill them all, the little kid from Greyditch appears out of nowhere and asks for help.

I like the DLC storyline, but it's WAY too easy and linear. I don't like have they've made it so you can just automatically refill health and ALL ammo, you don't get to loot bodies or rooms anymore (I get it, its supposed to be simulation, but cmon), and it's kind of meh. Hope the new one is more of a continuation of the story.

Penny-Arcade had a good list of them in their fallout thread.
Obviously, the ability to have sex with Moria or Roy's gal is a must-have but there are a lot of small tweaks people did - like not being able to use fast travel or using custom-weapon parts to repair custom-weapons. And I think there are some weapons that are bugged in that they can't be repaired. Unfortunately PA is suffering from intense database errors and I can't grab The Good List.

I hope one of those glitches is the incredible shortness of the thing, takes about an hour to do the new story maybe an hour and a half
story is better the OA but it seems shorter way shorter
you can come and go from the Pitt but there really doesnt seem to be any reason to once you do the new story
the new gear is sort of lacking
in OA the Stealth armor and Gauss gun changed the way I played thats not going to happen with this stuff
overall it is OK but 10 bucks is a bit steep for maybe 2 hours playtime

I havent been on my XBox in about a week, turned it on to watch some netflix and saw something about a new add on for Fallout 3. You will continue the story after the final chapter and decide the fate of the wasteland once and for all. Very very excited about this!!
Apparently the new add-on will bring harder enemies, new weapons (including some new type of bad ass flamethrower) and the ability to level all the way up to 30, as opposed to level 20. I have to admit I am very much looking forward to this...Coming May 5, 2009.

Will never buy another product from this company. I bought this game for PC when it was released. Logged about 30hrs of gameplay into it. Then I ran into a huge AI bug where a new mission was supposed to be triggered by one of the AI people. Instead the game would lock up everytime I approached this person. I couldn't walk, bring up pip boy or anything. All I could do was just look around with the mouse. After filtering through the help forums over there for a week I was basically told this is a known issue w/ no fix and was suggest to start over.
I haven't touched this game since. I read over there occasionally and see the game is still a POS riddled w/ bugs, storylines freezing up and generally being unplayable.

Playing on the 360, I was in the tunnels saving the scientists and one of them walked between myself and the underground zombie guys (blanking on what they are called) in the room with the automated guns that help you. He turned red on the radar and I didn't think much of it. Right after that, you walk outside to the Knights headquarters.
Since the Knights see the guy marked red, they mark me as an enemy and they shoot me. Without going thru the list of different things I tried to get past that point, ultimately, the game would have to be restarted if I wanted to play thru to the end.
