View Full Version : Go Out and Vote!

(i dunno if there is a thread already couldn't find one but...)

Why are there so many commercials preaching Go Out and VOTE!

I do not want the vote of someone influenced by these commercials affecting the vote of the people who know it is our civic duty to vote....clearly if you do not know that, you probably do not understand the larger issues that you would be voting for or against....

am I completely off here? anyone with political interest should know that it is our civic duty to vote....

I thought maybe for those people thinking their vote doesnt count (but then if you are smart enough to know the issues, then you would know how the electoral college system works so that cant be a good reason)

What about for people who work a lot and figured they wont and this commercial will hopefully get them off their honkers...(but then I thought I work three jobs and upwards of 80 hours and i made time to vote...if it is important to you than you will make time)

Then I thought well it must be just like any other commercial....targeting the stupid in the interest that the ignorant people will vote for a particular candidate...

please share your thoughts!

i think its to make sure people know that they won't be able to text their vote to 1-800-prz idol, and that they literally have to GO OUT and vote.

yeah..all i know is i've been called for Jury Duty so many times in Long Island but i never got called for jury duty in Albany (where i was registered to vote)

but i think its important to encourage young people to go out and vote. Old people vote all the time and they get anything they want. The reason why people should vote is because if their beliefs show up as a significant voter block than the politicians will start giving us more stuff

im not sure the rules on jury duty. Havent been called yet

oh and the NY court system would get your name from voting registration, it doesnt mean the town you registered in would call you. It goes to the whole state. Im pretty sure they are at least nice enough to only call you around where you live. Id be pretty heated if I got called for jury duty and had to drive to fuckin Cape May.

They use drivers records, voter rcords, tax records etc.
No, a misdemeanor would not bar you from jury duty.
A felony, without restoration of civil rights, would.

NYS RULES:
What are the qualifications for jury service?
A juror must be a United States citizen, resident of the county, not less than 18 years old, not have been convicted of a felony, and be able to understand and communicate in the English language.

however it appears that some states only use one method, I guess it depends where you live

As many people as possible should be brought into the political process. There are a lot of intelligent, rational-thinking people who generally don't vote because they believe that none of the candidates speak for them or because they have a negative view of politics in general. I can't fault a person for feeling this way, but ambivalence is often a cop-out. These people need to be nagged into submission, because a democracy doesn't work if only a fraction of the population is participating, especially if that fraction isn't a true representation of society.

As far as complete dropouts voting, no amount of advertising will peel them off their couches.

It's really interesting to see the TV commercials that simply say "vote"

My understanding is: more people register and vote = more Obama votes. True?

i couldnt disagree more

i had this whole discussion with a coworker once. He was like "you should have to take some test to be allowed to vote" and i said "you think a test to vote would help people like us out?" Any type of test to vote would be so biased towards a certain kind of person to support a certain type of politician that it would fuck up our country

i dont like the idea of people who dont understand the issues voting based on who they think is nicer. there are still people out there that think obama is an iraqi.

This was brought up on Ron & Fez a few years back, but I am really starting to think that dividing this nation into two countries - America Red and America Blue - would make a lot of sense. I don't think that there are any values shared by all Americans. Well, maybe the love of television.

i don't because most states are a little bit more red than blue or a little bit more blue than red. We need balance. Just cuz a state is red doesnt mean thats 100% of the people with that views, most places kinda just lean one way or the other

Well, naturally the gov't would have to provide ample time and resources for people some people to relocate to appropriate states.

i think your the only one who truly understood the depth of my question ....thank you for seeing my logic....

BUT!

once again let me say for those of you who have not answered according to the question....why would we want people, who do not know something as simple as its their civic duty to vote, voting for our next leader....clearly they cant conceive concepts if they dont know they are supposed to be voting and if they are too lazy to do so....

i think as a country you want to encourage as many people to vote as possible because you want people to give a shit.

i think the really stupid people that don't give a fuck won't vote anyway...but lets get people to participate in the democratic process! Let them care! Its good for the nation

My sister and her husband live in the house my mother grew up in and that her father died in in the mid 60's... they recently recieved a jury duty notice for my dead grandfather... now it's been quite a while since he's been eligible for jury duty, being dead for 50 years 'n all, and we of course thought of voter fraud immediately... is there any other way this could've happened?

Thaaank yooooou!!!

Being in a red state is embarrassing sometimes, and with a little accent on certain words or phrases, is the main reason I don't call the show. "Where are you calling from there, Ozzie? Ohhhhh"

I'll probably be wasting my time tomorrow, and it will be assumed that most of the white people here voted for McCain, and most of the minorities in the state voted for Obama, but what the hell. Maybe I'll get exit-polled and give them a nice shitburger to eat on the Ten O'Clock news.

As for as the TV ads, next time pay attention to what time, what channel, and what show they're advertising on, and you'll get a pretty good idea of who is paying for the ad, and who their target audience is.
