So after tomorrow, two people will not be voted into office. For each of them, what do you think they do next? Same for the losing party, how do they regroup? Who becomes the new face of the party to run in 4 years?

I expected Obama to be named as a VP candidate this time around, so if he doesn't win i'd be shocked if we hear from him again. No way could he garner the same excitement on a second try.

If Mc Cain wins i'll honestly be hoping he dies of natural causes in office, so the dumb fucks in this country get what they deserve.

She wouldn't have a chance. You listen to the rumbings from GOP insiders over the last couple of weeks about her "going rogue" and it's pretty clear that she's burned some serious bridges on the national level. I actually think the GOP picked her as late as they did because even at that point it was going to be a longshot for McCain to win (he was already hovering around only a 30% chance of a win at that point) and they didn't want to taint anyone of actual value to the party, like Bobby Jindal. Don't be surprised to see him make his bid in 2012.

Bingo. It's Petraeus or Jindal. My money is on Petraeus, with Jindal as VP to shore up the base. That's a good step for the GOP to make, putting 2 Ivy-educated genuine scholars out there. Obama would have made some controversial decisions at that point while Petraeus, on the other hand, is an apolitical figure who by all objective standards is strong inspiring leader who also understands the nuances of international relations.

While I believe that people in the Republican Party see her as a potential leader of the party and the 2012 nominee (if McCain loses), I don't see it.

She is very, very popular with a portion of the Republican Party, but I don't think she really is the choice for the whole party, especially given the lack of appeal she has outside of her political base.

It's why Huckabee is not the nominee this year.

For Petraeus to be the presidential canidate i's gonna take a continued reversal of how Iraq is going and for the public to feel like the troops are getting out AND Iraq not completely collapsing into chaos. The specifics of what he actually did while he was there aside, the public by and large is going to see him and just think "IRAQ" in giant neon letters, and that's a tough hurdle to overcome. Iraq through 2008 is, by and large, going to be remembered as a failure (again, I'm generalizing as to how this is going to be perceived/spun in an election) and Petraeus could be seen as one of the faces of that failure, unfairly judged as that or not. I think they might be better served flipping the ticket with him running as Jindal's VP.

Candidates don't become the figurehead of the party for an election by not playing by the rules of the party they're supposed to be representing. As we've clearly seen this cycle, this isn't the McCain of yore and he was all too willing play ball with the party to get him elected by any means necessary. Sure, he can make demands of his own, but if the party was deadset against asking Jindal it wouldn't have been in his best interests to push the issue. On top of that, Jindal himself may have been asked and he refused. My scenario was just a hypothetical.

Palin was tossed out there to shore up the hardcore Right wingers who were put off by McCain, which she did, but it appears the underestimated McCain's ability to draw in those closer to the middle or leaning a bit Left at this point as well as how Palin was driving off too many voters in contrast to how many she was bringing in. Choosing Palin was a dire tactical mistake because VP's are typically there to keep from losing votes. They rarely are able to pull in signifiant votes themselves. She's losing far too many votes compared to what she's "saving." It's a comparable misfire to Gore picking Lieberman in 2000 (though that choice was for different reasons; the end result was rather similar). If your VP is driving away votes, you've screwed up huge.

I really can't see Jeb running that soon to W. being out of the office. We really can't underestimate how much most of the country hates the name Bush right now. Jeb has likely missed his shot at the big game thanks to his younger brother.

It would seem to me that Palin is driving away potential voters. I've heard it from some people, and, while in all likelihood, I would have voted for Obama anyway, my choice was certain once the Palin choice was made.

However, is there any scientific evidence of this? Is it in polls?

No matter what happens in Iraq, I think the consensus among the electorate is that Petraeus did a superb job with the hand he was dealt. I see your point, but Petraeus didn't send us to Iraq, he devised a plan for victory and the opinion on both sides is that he should've been in that position sooner. He took a failing strategy of constant defense and falling back to fortified bases and constructed a new direction towards not only taking the offensive and boosting morale, but embedding soldiers in Iraqi towns and convincing the Iraqi people (or at minimum enough Iraqi people) that we aren't only in Iraq for ourselves. If we pull out and they fall into chaos, he can point to Obama-mandated defeat. If the success continues (and at least in Iraq I think it will), it's because of Petraeus/Nagl tactics that are sensible not only militarily, but culturally. Time will tell how the general public views this war, but I'll bet that whether McCain or Obama is president, this will no long be Bush's war, and the success of the past 2 years will be seen from a less emotional vantage point. I'll tell you what, if Petraeus isn't the nominee, me and Earl will have sex on Paltalk in the summer of 2012.

Maybe, but the same could've been said for McCain, yet he made it through the Republican primaries and if the economy didn't collapse he could've won the presidency even with his hawkish views, a drag on his VP pick, and the Bush albatross around his neck.

Obama will cry racism as his people do anytime they're encountered with someone who disagrees with them. Biden will go back to doing nothing again.

McCain would go back to working for the American people across party lines as usual. Palin will get a TV show.

For me it comes down to this:
Would I rather have an extremist, idiot, unexperienced but charasmatic Vice-President?
Or an extremist, idiot, unexperienced but charasmatic President?

For this reason, I have to go with McCain. Vice Presidents typically don't do anything anyway.

Let's look at the political careers of unsuccessful running mates later:

2004: John Edwards. His '08 campaign never took off, and his political career is now effectively over, but I don't think we can blame the fact he wanted some strange while his wife was fighting cancer on his campaign with Kerry.

2000: Joseph Lieberman. Took a lot of blame for the loss, hastening his falling-out with the Democratic Party. If projections that the Democrats will gain seats in the Senate pan out, I'll be as relevant there as he will be.

1996: Jack Kemp. He was pretty much at the end of his career anyway.

1992: Dan Quayle. Pretty much dropped off the face of the earth afterwards.

1988: Lloyd Bentsen. Probably pretty much at the end of his career anyway, like Kemp.

1984: Geraldine Ferraro. Last seen sounding like every Italian person's crazy old racist aunt.

1980: Walter Mondale. Probably the last one who did anything afterwards, even if that was taking one of the worst assbeatings in history from Reagan.

Good for you Bill. I'm leaning Democratic this year, but I'm proud you are going out and excersising (sic) your right to vote. We need a lot more young people involved.

And this is what my brother-in-law responded with when he read that:

Bill, good choice. Scott, you gonna make your Mom and Dad disown you. I can't see Obama as a protest pick. But if you truly don't like McCain, I can understand. Because he is not, not, like George Bush.

And this is after I wrote him a 5 or 6 paragraph email a few months ago explaining my suppport for the Obama ticket. It was coherent as to reasons I was voting for Obama, and not once did I ever say "the GOP sucks" and make my choice known as a "protest" vote.

I could send them friendly, non-condescending e-mails with tips on how to live with a president you hate. Now I am thinking of sending them all a big "HAHA" with a graphic of Nelson pointing at them and a note that says something like "Welcome to being big fucking losers, you goddamn losers!!!". I have received too many cocky e-mails about how certain they are of McCain winning along with idiotic rumors they heard about Obama being a muslim, Kenyan, little boy toucher, etc., etc. etc. Now I am really leaning toward the rubbing their noses in their loss and making 5 Nov as miserable as possible for them, even if it means many won't talk to me for years. Seriously, this is a conversation with nobody. It's like a section of a conversation that never existed. Who are you even talking to and what are you specifically talking about?

Fucking amazing, all of you can see the glaring shortcomings on their side yet choose to ignore the idiocy on your side and both are equally bad but hey youre right and everyone else is wrong.

See above. It would help if you had actual points you were bringing up or replying to.

Oh and I know what the photo is from, I didnt photoshop it just thought it fit the nice cult of obama people running around following him without really knowing what hes all about, he may win but that doesnt mean he will do a good job. Come back in 4 years then talk shit.

Yeah, "nobody knows what he's about" after 4 years. Why stop with your "nobody can write 5 positive paragraphs about Obama" line in terms of things you're making up?

I've been thinking about how I am going to talk to my Republican friends and family if Obama wins. At first, I thought I could be sympathetic and understanding. Maybe I'll talk to my priest and see what he suggests.

Maybe try a variation of the old John Wayne quote about John Kennedy in 1960:

"I didn't vote for him but he's my president, and I hope he does a good job."

I seriously doubt anyone could write 5 or 6 paragraphs to support obama, hes going to fuck up shit even worse by thinking he is fixing anything, nothing is broken its a market correction and over inflated areas will take a hit for a couple years.

Of course if he does nothing he will look like a genius in a couple years, that is if he wins. I dont want obama cause I believe he is a socialist and his plans will not be good for this nation, he may very well lose on his share the wealth statement.

OK, we have SP1's reasoned argument. Now let's hear from another conservative pundit, Andrew Sullivan:

I read that earlier tonight and it is a well-reasoned essay with this poetic ending:

But there is something about his rise that is also supremely American, a reminder of why so many of us love this country so passionately and are filled with such grief at what has been done to it and in its name. I endorse Barack Obama because I will not give up on America, because I believe in America, and in her constitution and decency and character and strength.

And the world needs that America now as much as it ever has. Can we start that healing, that rebirth, tomorrow?

Yes. We. Can.

1988: Lloyd Bentsen. Probably pretty much at the end of his career anyway, like Kemp.

1980: Walter Mondale. Probably the last one who did anything afterwards, even if that was taking one of the worst assbeatings in history from Reagan.

Bentsen became Clinton's first Treasury Secretary. Mondale was selected to run for Paul Wellstone's Minnesota Senate seat in the 2002 election but lost to Norm Coleman.

Youre an idiot, look directly at the post above and it was who I was talking to, if quoting makes it easier for you sorry I didnt take that route.

The 4 year crack was about obama, anyone with common sense can realize he hasnt done shit in his elected office but for some reason all the emotional people seem to think hes a great leader. And its only positive paragraphs from an emotional stand point, all that bullshit works great in theory but if you are rational about it then you understand none of those policies end up working.

Its like people wanting Utopia, it may look great on paper but it will never work since there are always lazy people in the mix, then people on the fringe say "why should I work if hes not?" Then you have shitloads of people not wanting to do shit and the structure breaks down instead of everyone being in a happy place.

The bottom line is that its no use helping out those that are poor, they worked hard to be poor and if they wanted even a middle class living they would have made those steps by now. In the words of Carlin "Fuck the poor"

I have no point to being told I was being an ass, or even a warning for a personal attack, getting called names is not an attack, IMO. But I dont remember you saying that to me before but I dont remember since I pulled back from being a complete douche on this board simply because most people are pretty nice. And I am far from emotional except that I dont like either one of the people running, mojo calling him my party is crazy, I didnt even vote for mccain today since I dont like him much either, anyone that has read my political posts realizes I hate both of them about the same. I do think obama does lean towards the socialist side but not as much as the whackos think on the far right and not nearly as much as that picture indicates. I wasnt meaning to flame, just trying to get people to think about his actual policies rather than the fluff that is politics. I will apologize to st mikey but not for someone banning over personal shit.

I don't ban people "willy nilly." I can count on one had the number of people I've given the boot to since being re-modded that weren't spam accounts

Oh, and of course, because you declare that I ban people because of their opinion, it must be true. I'm screwed now because you're going to find all the examples of me doing that. I've been mowing down people left and right this election season, haven't I?

Oh, right, you won't, because I haven't done that at all.

And I love how my "aggressive debating style" means it's OK for someone to call me an idiot over a political debate. I didn't ban him because of his politics or his opinion...I gave him a temporary ban because he's been on a roll in multiple threads attacking people and he made the poor choice to jump to personal attacks because he's flustered over an election. "He chose...poorly."

And, to cap it off with a lovely cherry on top, banning people on a message board is now comparable to shooting people.

It's a temp ban that I was gonna lift in a day or two. Next time, don't jump to the personal attacks just because someone doesn't win an election.

Dropping ridiculous statements and accusations with nothing to back them up and then throwing up your hands like people are going to ban you at any second for being so "out of line." If you don't like me temp banning him for him calling me an idiot, fine, but don't make things up about me. I don't ban people for their politics, and I don't even ban that many people, period. You spin the whole thing to make it look like I'm some kind of totalitarian ogre who tolerates no dissent, which completely flies in the face of all the discussions and debates I have around here on politics with people I clearly disagree with, none of whom I've had to ban or resort to flaming. Plus, you throw out shooting people as if it is even somehow remotely similar to what we're tlaking about.

Let me splain.

The banning tool is your most powerful weapon as a mod, the gun is mine as a cop.
I was not being literal. See? It's a mere comparison.

The comparison is indeed remotely relevant in that I (and only a handful of members apparently) believe neither should be misused, but that when one is, the public has every right to know the reasons why... for fear they may be next.

Now, our equivalent of the mayor has said that the banning was justified, and I had stated I would live with that... but if our version of the cop wishes to continue the debate as to the validity of his actions, our version of the public is ready.

I'm pretty sure your use of passive aggressive was also incorrect, but since I cant come up with the correct term, I'll let it slide.

I dont feel the need to "back up statements" when the reasons for such are on the same page.

The banning tool is your most powerful weapon as a mod, the gun is mine as a cop.
I was not being literal. See? It's a mere comparison.

It's still unecessarily dramatic and overreactionary. It's basically a twist on Godwin's Law.

The comparison is indeed remotely relevant in that I (and only a handful of members apparently) believe neither should be misused, but that when one is, the public has every right to know the reasons why... for fear they may be next.

"Fear they might be next?" Again, this is what I'm talking about with passive aggressive...using all this loaded language like some great crime has been committed and everyone is in danger. Some guy felt the need to insult me in a political debate and I didn't feel like taking it. He had been building towards it anyways so I gave him some time to cool off. It was no great mystery...I quoted what ticked me off and that was that.

Now, our equivalent of the mayor has said that the banning was justified, and I had stated I would live with that... but if our version of the cop wishes to continue the debate as to the validity of his actions, our version of the public is ready.

Fine, but don't make it something it obviously wasn't or make things up about me.

I dont feel the need to "back up statements" when the reasons for such are on the same page.

So you can flat out lie about me so long as it boosts your attempts to be melodramatic and turn this into a huge "thing?"

First, my understanding of the term Willy Nilly has little to do with the frequency of an occurrence, but more with the disorder of it, non-structured, biased, haphazardness.

With that definition, I stick by my statement. The very fact that you dont ban many people, but just decided to ban this particular member because he called you a name you didnt like adds to that stand.

As for Godwin's Law.... I was simply trying to compare something relatable.

Not attacking the staff has always been a pretty clear rule here, and I didn't say anything to him that required the conversation to shift to him attacking me. I guess you assume otherwise, but almost all of my "serious" conversations here take place without me having to attack someone or someone attacking me, so when it does happen it tends to piss me off.

Still not sure how it was "biased" since I obviously don't ban people due to their politics. And what does it even mean to say it's "disordered" or "non-structured?" I don't have a schedule for when I ban people. I don't know when someone is going to decide to respond by attacking me instead of my points. When it happens, I deal with it. Fortunately, it doesn't happen that often.

It's a non-issue and you're trying to make it into one wihout anything to back up what you're accusing me of.

As for Godwin's Law.... I was simply trying to compare something relatable.
You dont like my scenario..ok...a teacher flunks a student because she doesnt like the content of an essay,
and at the bottom of the essay, it says, and teacher if you dont agree with me, youre an idiot.

And agan, this has no basis on what happened since I clearly have not banned and do not ban people for their politics differing from mine. His post wasn't some kind of general insult that I took issue with...it was targeted at me and I don't have to tolerate that when it's someone freaking out over a political debate.

Was I upset that the banning occurred? YES. But when MikeyBoy said it was good, I let it go...only to return to find the discussion continuing with my name being sullied, so I joined back in.

It was biased because of the whole discussion leading up to the banning. His idiot comment affected you because he disagreed with your politics. It was clear you didnt like him prior to the statement, and when the statement occurred, you acted emotionally. You even said you banned him because you have the power and you didnt feel like being called an idiot today.

You feel you were attacked, as you keep using that word. Is idiot now on that list of major words we use to end an argument?! You can say idiot at a poker table, so I'm pretty sure it's not an expletive.

But ok, if it's common practice that when a mod/admin feels he's attacked, he bans, then I guess thats the rule. I dont recall it hapening, but I'll take your word. I wonder if sp1 was aware of that rule?

I'm sorry you think it's no big thing. Your rights as a moderator should be teamed with some responsibilities as well. I agree with Don Stugots that you and all the mods do a great job around here, and I thank you for it. I just disagree with you in this instance.

I was certainly registered enough to serve jury duty 2 years ago.

Conspiracy?

I guess I'm the big loser. I wasted my time. I did a paper ballot (with a black female cop stating at me at a table out in the open), but that's not counted until after the election is called, I believe.

Was I upset that the banning occurred? YES. But when MikeyBoy said it was good, I let it go...only to return to find the discussion continuing with my name being sullied, so I joined back in.

Nobody is sullying your name. Nobody has made anything up about you or accused you of "absuing your power" or however else this can be spun. You try and make this into more than it was, accuse of me doing things I don't do and now this is somehow twisted to be an attack on you.

This is such a self-deating argument. If I want to ban someone for their politics, why would I wait to do it? Why would I dress it up as them doing something else? If I wanted to squash opposing opinions I would have banned him weeks ago. Hell, again, wouldn't I have just banned you the first time you did this sort of thing? It's such a convenient strawman to attack the staff for "abusing their power" because we don't actually do that so the people levelling the ridiculous charges aren't at risk of anything.

I don't like being called an idiot any day. There was no reason for it and you're not supposed to needlessly attack the staff.

You feel you were attacked, as you keep using that word. Is idiot now on that list of major words we use to end an argument?! You can say idiot at a poker table, so I'm pretty sure it's not an expletive.

Nowhere did I or anyone else say that that word is off limits...it's all about context. It was a political debte and he felt the need to resort to personal attacks out of nowhere directed at me.

But ok, if it's common practice that when a mod/admin feels he's attacked, he bans, then I guess thats the rule. I dont recall it hapening, but I'll take your word. I wonder if sp1 was aware of that rule?

I have no idea. It's been pointed out numrous times. The basic rule is that personal attacks are uncalled for and can be bannable. Choosing to personally attack a mod (which, ironically, he did because HE disagrees with MY politics) out of nowhere, or any poster, where there's no context of kidding around or ball busting is generally a bad idea. Sp1! has been getting more ad more heated in recent days and there's no excuse ofr him to take that out on me or anyone else like that when people are just debating the politics of the day.

I'm sorry you think it's no big thing. Your rights as a moderator should be teamed with some responsibilities as well. I agree with Don Stugots that you and all the mods do a great job around here, and I thank you for it. I just disagree with you in this instance.

Just to be clear, thats not an attack. Just an opinion.

He's banned for a day. It's not a big deal. And MY responsibility? What about his responsibility to not flip out and start attacking people because of political differences?

Nobody has to agree with what I did. I just don't appreciate being accused of things that I don't do.

I'd like to make a few points.

First, personal attacks are not permitted on this board. Sure they are unmoderated sometimes because the mods miss them. There is ballbusting that happens between friends here that can be taken as an outsider as personal attacks, but most of the time the intention is apparent. There is some conjecture as to whether "idiot" is a personal attack. Sure there are worse things you can call a person, but when we are trying to have civil conversations about people's tightly held beliefs, which can get quite emotional, name calling really doesn't have a place.

There have been a couple of times that discussions between the poster in question and others have turned in this direction and I have stepped in to tell all parties to knock it off. I thought that my message was clear, but maybe it was not. I guess I didn't give a formal warning in that I didn't give a formal warning by PM in those instances, so in the interest of fairness, I'll pull the ban and assume the message got across.

As for Mojo's decision, I see absolutely no abuse of power. I don't think that there is any distinction in the fact that the personal attack was made against a mod rather than anyone else. Under the circumstances, it appeared that the user in general had been given amble notice that such behavior was unacceptable yet continued it anyway. A banning would be warranted in such case. Mojo is extremely fair when it comes to bannings, and that's one of the reasons we brought him back as a mod after he stepped down. If you want to bitch at someone for arbitrary abuse of power, bitch at me (Hey Kev, Hippo and Matty!)

I've been thinking about how I am going to talk to my Republican friends and family if Obama wins. At first, I thought I could be sympathetic and understanding. Maybe I'll talk to my priest and see what he suggests.

Practice with me first. I'm still sort of Republican, even though I went independant after the Jersey primaries. But for the hardcore ones, who believed all the emails and such, I suggest you wait a while. This one is pretty hard on them. And don't be too hard on them, they just believed what their leaders told them. I was one of them once, and it's not a cool feeling. I know that is how most of the Democratic Party felt after the Mondale-Ferraro ticket got blown out of the sky by Reaganomics.
