View Full Version : Judd Aptow, Kevin Smith, or David Wain?

Ok, both of these comedy directors are sharing similiar casts these days (and all work with Elizabeth Banks). Which do you think is the best?

I think David Wain is the most original, creative, unique and brilliant comedic mind of our time and i put him above anyone else. But hes still under the radar (with his mainstream effort of "Role Models" getting great reviews, we'll see what that does)

but anyway, who do ronfez.netters prefer if they wanted to see a comedy this weekend?

this is the reason that i choose Kevin Smith specifically because he has directed more than two great movies. Clerks, Zack and Miri Make A Porno, Chasing Amy, Dogma ....

David Wain directed Wet Hot American Summer, which was great - but the only other film he directed was Ten, which sucked.

Judd Aptow directed only two movies 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up, which were both funny and original. He really is a producer and writer more than anything else. I have been reading that his new movie, Role Models, is gonna be really good.

and all of Kevin Smith's internet blog stuff can't hold a candle to "Wainy Days"

i adore david wain, but it is hard to compare his stuff to the catalog of the other two. i'm voting for him anyway. so fuck off.

i'm really looking forward to role models.

David Wain kicks ass, but...

I think David Wain is the most original, creative, unique and brilliant comedic mind of our time and i put him above anyone else.

...what?

Miss Stella.

I keep watching that shitty new Superjail cartoon on Adult Swin just for Wain's sassy voice.

Big fans of all 3, but I picked Apatow.

Larry Sanders Show
Freaks & Geeks
Undeclared

Dude was a huge part of all 3 shows, especially the latter two, and that wins it for me.

I'm not sure what it is.

Wain is very good on it, but it's an ordeal to get through. I'm not opposed to movie or TV violence, but it seems like every episode ends up with a drawn out montage of just massive carnage that ends up being kind of, well, exhausting. It's not really funny, but it's not really bad...it's just sort of an ordeal to get through wth David Wain mixed in.

It does, but Metalocalypse also manages to be really goddamn funny over the course of the episode.

Here's an interesting Q & A Kevin Smith did with The Star-Ledger:

http://www.nj.com/entertainment/tv/index.ssf/2008/10/kevin_smith_qa_porn_and_life_a.html

In it he's specifically asked about Judd Apatow. He gives a very gracious answer:

Q: One thing I have to say is that everybody borrows stuff, but to me, the hyperarticulate, pop-culture-obsessed guy who is still basically romantic and aspires to women way out of his league -- that always seemed like your thing. And now Judd Apatow's made a fortune with it. Do you ever kind of feel like you kind of moved the puck all the way down the ice and then somebody stole it and made your goal?

A: Excellent analogy! But seriously, no, when I saw '40-Year-old Virgin,' I just remember being filled with a sense of childlike wonder that somebody else had made the kind of movie I liked to make. And did it very commercially -- that was huge. I mean, before Judd, if I wanted to make a movie called 'Zack and Miri Make a Porno,' it would have to be a $500,000 budget. But after him, we can have a lot more freedom. You add Seth Rogen to the equation and it makes it even more viable. So I feel like. Thank God, Judd exists. Yeah he did take the puck and score with it. But if I made it the tiniest bit easier for him, he's made it a hell of a lot easier for me.

I think it's one of the best shows on TV, period.

It's funny, talking about what TV Ron watches in another thread, and the Venure Bros. seems like exactly the kinda thing he'd be into except he probably won't give it a chance because it's cartoon.

STELLA, THE TEN, and WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER are nothing short of brilliant. I think those three films have more re-watch value than anything by Kevin Smith (who I used to love... then I hated... but, I reeeeally liked ZACK & MIRI.)

Apatow is a force. I love his work. All of it. I love the tone of just about everything he does.
But, David Wain is the shiz. Nothing's funnier than WHAS and THE TEN.

Except ANCHORMAN... which was directed by McKay, not Apatow.

And JOHNNY DANGEROUSLY. Which has nothing to do with this thread but, that's the funniest f'ing movie I own so I thought I mention it. Bitches.

no one in this thread better NOT insult anything "Johnny Dangerously"

i can't think of a funnier movie scene than when Johnny Dangeriously was breakdancing, but it was so obviously a stunt double, but then it ended with a close up of Michael Keaton's face. That is hilarious!

I guess I missed something with The Ten. I absolutely loved certain segments, but then others were just horrible. I mean, I enjoyed it, but it's wildly uneven.

WHAS, however, is amazing.

The more I think about this, I don't think Wain belongs in this competition. He is a director, yes, and he is a writer...but Smith and Apatow have really defined their projects with their writing specifically. Wain obviously has his own style and is really goddamn funn, but WHAS, The Ten and Stella are essentially group projects with other members of The State. WHAS is basically a Michael Showalter script directed by Wain. The Ten is basically a Ken Marino script directed by Wain.

At least he has Wainy Days.
