I don't want kids. I want a dog. It must be a good hiking dog. What breed should I get?

Bernese Mountain Dogs are good ones. My friend has one, and it is the nicest dog. Him and his wife do take it camping all the time. You can't go wrong with a Collie or a Husky.

Here is an interesting read on what to look for in a hiking dog: http://traildog.hypermart.net/what_breed.htm

How often do you plan to hike and for what distance? What are your space constrains when not hiking? If you get a dog for hiking and then only go once a month where will it get its between hike exercise? It will have to maintain its condition if you want a good companion on you treks, otherwise it will be a burden by no fault of its own.

Why not get a genetically-manipulated freak cat?

My father in law just bred his English Springer Spaniel. They're energetic outdoor dogs and I would assume would love hiking with you. If you're interested, PM me and I can let you know what he's asking:

This is the one we took, her name is Abbey:

Bred dogs are fine, just DO NOT buy one from a pet store. Find yourself a real breeder who can provide the paperwork and tell you the ancestry of the dog. Pet stores like the stuff you see in malls are pretty terrible (keep hearing stories of puppy mills and such) and also usually costs 2x the price of a real breeder.

I have an amazing ten year old golden retriever, but we had a fantastic breeder. From my experience, they are wild the first two years then you will never regret it. She is loyal, great with kids, protective but not at all aggressive, totally loving, and will be there when you are having a shit day. Plus they're gorgeous and semi-easy to maintain hygiene wise. Oh and chicks dig her, so that's always a plus.
