which sucks.
It's a fantastic movie, perfectly done, and hasn't even been out for 6 years.
Why remake??

Washington (ANI): Superstar Will Smith is reportedly in talks to star in Steven Spielberg's next venture, which is remake of Chan Wook-park's 'Oldboy'. Spielberg is in early talks with Smith to collaborate on the remake set around a kidnapped man, reports Variety.
In the 2003 Korean original, a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he's released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge.
Spielberg is looking for a writer to begin the development process
NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Motherfucker. That is going to be fucking TERRIBLE!

I read about this too, and I would show up in the theater for a Will Smith version of Old Boy, either they make Will Smith do all that against type stuff, or they completely butcher the movie- either way it will be too bad to miss.

There's no way they will include the incestuous relationship.

Agreed.
Spielberg don't even like guns in his movies now. I can't see him even approaching that subject.
No matter, the original is such a great film no remake would surpass it.

I wonder how they are going to handle the part where he's cooped up and he starts jerking off to girl on the TV.

How can this possibly be true? Neither the star nor director seem to fit the movie.

I can't wait for Walt Disney Studios to remake Cannibal Holocaust.

No, he just didn't want them in E.T.. If he's "anti-gun," I'll assume it was Senor Spielbergo who directed all of the very violent films he's put out over the last 10 years.

Instead of committing incest Will Smith will learn that its the little things in life that make it worthwhile, and instead of cutting out his own tongue he will yell "Welcome to Earf!"

I can only assume that Spielberg would be producing this. It's not his style at all, and he produces movies left and right.

You're right. At first I didn't think he would touch the Oldboy twist, but then again, he did have that bizarre sex/hostage killing scene at the end of the otherwise excellent Munich.

This news has me wanting to go back and watch this movie again this weekend. I was totally in shock the first time I watched it I had to re-watch it almost immediately. Good stuff.

I'm not sure.
I think it might kind of be like seeing your daughter get fucked. Even though it shouldn't affect your original image of her, everytime you see her, you're gonna think of her getting pounded.
They're gonna fuck the ending up at the very least. I can't imagine all the tooth yanking and tounge cutting to make it in either.

Yeah, really. Munich could have been named "Being running in hallways with guns".

I always thought the story was that he filmed it with guns, but it didn't "test well", and he changed it to dangling keys. Something like that. I've never heard of Oldboy. Should I rent it, or something? I'm a cinematic retard.

But the twist in the story is.....will the crystal skull hear what he has to say?
Ugh.

it'd be one thing if you loved a book and a dirctor you hated was going to do it. then there's a chance it would never get made to your liking. but if you love the film, fuck him if he makes a crappy imitation. sounds too violent/gory for me tho'

If Scorsese can turn a great Asian movie into a total mess, I don't have any faith that Spielberg can pull this off.

I don't know, this is Spielberg we're talking about, I think he's a damn good director and can pull this off. There are a fair amount of Korean remakes coming out now though, I saw the trailer for "The Uninvited" the other day too which is a remake of "Tale of Two Sisters."

I read two things about it.
Seriously, if you haven't seen the movie, don't look at this.
They are totally cutting the ending out. No big Mido surprise, which makes you have to wonder why they would remake it. And, Will Smith won't eat a live octopus.

Are you talking about the subtitles?
You should watch with the voiceover. The guy that does Oh Dae Su's voice sounds like Adam West. It's fucking great.

Thank God.
Steven Spielberg and Will Smith’s planned remake of Park Chan-Wook’s Old Boy (actually, if you want to get technical, it was supposed to be a separate adaptation of the original Old Boy manga) is dead. Latino Review reports that it was killed when Dreamworks couldn’t come to a deal with Mandate pictures.
