I have a moral conundrum, and need help.

So, this morning, i run to lowes to buy a soda and get $20 cashback.
For whatever reason this morning, I decided to use the "self checkout". first time i tried, card read failed. so i tried again. again, card read failed. there is a cashier monitoring the self checkouts, so she calls me up here so she can swipe my card. i go through the motions, it works, she gives me money, and i go on my merry way.

I get to work, and realize that i only took out $20, but she gave me a $20 and 2- $10. Meaning, she gave me an extra $20.

My moral dilemma is, what do I do with this extra $20 ? I cannot keep it, since it doesnt feel right holding onto it. It feels like stolen money to me, and its been nagging me all morning. Do I give it to charity? Do i go back to the store and turn it in?

What Would East Side Doug Do?

keep it...its their mistake
and if you do consider it stolen, giving it to charity doesnt change the fact that your a theif
so i guess take it back to lowes if you dont keep it

Start a college fund for the bun in the oven. Then add 20 every week for the next 18 years and 7 months

Who goes to Lowe's for a soda?

You should give it back. In the retail world, a $20 discrepancy ona someone's till is grounds for a write up or warning or whatever. It would be cool to give that back and spare the cashier that drama, especially in these economic times and such write ups put people a step closer to being fired.

i do. i dont pass any BOA atm's enroute to work. but i do pass lowes. so, if i need cash, i go in, buy a soda, and take out whatever cash i need. its like using an "out of network" atm without the stupid fees.

i do this all the time at like supermarkets, pharmacies, etc. dont tell me i'm the only one.

on the rare occasion that i actualy need cash i take it out at the self checkout lane at the grocery store

someone here said it best "cash is for retards and old people"

instead of paying fees i actually bought a pack of ramen once to take out money...12 cent fee is better than 2 bucks

I guess the "right" thing to do would be to give it back. In all honesty, I would probably keep it. Not only could I use the money, but it's the path of least resistance, which I usually take, for better or worse.

Give it back. Like mojo said, they have to account for that money.

Last year I got a Christmas tree from home depot, and on the way home realized I forgot to pay for it. I went back and the manager gave it to me for half price. It always feels good to do the right thing.....plus, it would be pretty fucked up celebrating Christmas with a stolen tree.

BTW, this happened at a gas station too, and I did the same thing.

As an ex Retail person give it back...she will be held accountable. $20 bucks isnt going to change your life!

i pass lowes on the way home.
i am going to speak to a mgr on my way back.
he'll probably say thank you, and pocket the money, but hey... its off my hands.

in her defense, she was too busy talking to her coworker about this guy that she was all about to realize she doubled my change.

Keep it and teach that cashier a lesson, maybe after the write up she will be more careful counting back change.

I've heard about time enough to count your money ... when the dealing's done - but you didn't know you had extra bills? Were they crisp?

topless_mike

well, i went back to the store after work to return the $20.
i asked to speak to a manager... then i had to ask again.
by the third time that i would have had to ask, i simply just left the store.

so, i made the attempt. cant help it that the store sucks, as do the workers there.

well, this morning i went to the store again to take out money.
i purposely avoided that one self check out that i used last time as to ward off any bad karma.

i scanned my gatorade, and took out money. the money came out exactly as it should have.
i put my money in my pocket after counting it, and at this point i feel something hit my head. felt like water.

turns out one of the birds that lives in the store shit on me.

bad karma? a fuck you to me? or, good luck since i get my yearly review at 10am today.

Check your receipt. Dollars to doughnuts she charged your bankcard for $40. She was probably thinking the same thing that I am..."Who the fuck takes out $20 at an ATM?" What were you going to buy with that, a stamp?
