Any advice on landing a job I'm *almost* qualified for- besides flashing boob.<p>
Somebody here must have pulled it off at least once. Help me live the dream, and I'll try to return the favor! :bye:

thats how i got the job i have now. two tactics, know someone and lie on your resume. no one checks that. at least not where i work.

be confident with your responses, even if you don't know what you're talking about

who even knew you were a girl!
just go for it, if you are close but seem like a great candidate they will take you. especially because you will be able to come in on the cheaper end of the salary range

Don't you work for Homeland Security? :glurps: :help:
I would recommend learning the big picture about the company or organization that you are applying with and coming up with a rap where you show you understand what the "mission" of the organization is and how you can help them achieve it. Most places, especially if they are hiring in this environment, want problem solvers - sell yourself as one.
Spend some time on the organization's web site or Google them to get the flavor of how they see themselves (and how outsiders see them if that information exists) and tack your sails accordingly.
Best of luck.

Excellent suggestion, and I might add research the company using sites like Indeed.com where you can see employee opinions about the company and see what its really like there. Some of them can be real bitch fests...especially the ones for my former and now pretty much dead employer.

confidence does go a long way. be confident enough to crack some jokes or use some off-color language in the interview. I said that something was "bullshit" in my interview for the job I have now, and the interviewer completely agreed with what I was saying to the point where he let his guard down and started talking like a person instead of an interviewer. we became colleagues at the moment I said "bullshit."

Just be confident and Ronnie B has actually had some great advice. Go interview for jobs you arent at all qualified for. Overshoot 3 steps higher so you are ready to land a gig 2 steps higher.

I recommend reading "How to Interview Like a Top MBA" by Shel Leanne. It's an excellent guide to developing a strategy in stretch situations.

another piece of advice: do some practice interviews for jobs at companies you have no interest in. that way, you'll be able to absorb what interviewers do and the questions they ask without the pressure and nervousness. then, when you go for the job you do want, you'll be prepared.
if you're worried that you're wasting the companies' time interviewing for a job you don't want, don't sweat it. they interview people all the time that they know they won't hire, so it works both ways.

Work is for suckers. You're a woman anyway, my suggestion: learn to cook.

i am trying to change careers so I am kind of under qualified for the jobs I am applying for right now. I know that if I get an interview, I can sell myself enough to make an impression.
Mull, keep at it.

Thanks for helping me out everybody. The application is due Thurs., and when I get my interview I'll be ready.
Of course if I used all the advice at once, I'd be confidently cracking jokes while straddling the dean and name-dropping his colleagues. Bad-ass, but I'm not applying for the social-climbing funny whore position...yet.
