CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's increasingly bellicose President Hugo Chavez warned that he may put tanks on the streets if a former television star running for his Socialist Party loses a state election this month.

Im not really for going into other nations, Afghanistan was one thing and it may surprise a lot of you to know I was never for Iraq but this nut bag is starting to get scary.

Its getting to the point I think we at least need to have a sit down with the surrounding nations to see what they would like as far as support.

I don't think a rational person on this board, liberal or conservative will disagree with the notion that Chavez is off his rocker.

It's what to do with him is where the argument lies. Or if we should do anything at all.

I personally think a wait and see attitude is in order. Let the loon self-destruct, then support a democratic reform candidate, without interference in the process. If we do that, I feel the people of Venezuela will move towards real democracy and change their government's structure by themselves.

I'd hope that Chavez doesn't leave the room until he has a fine pink paste of pulverized skull, blood and brain matter caking his fists.

Seriously, the guy literally jumped over the outfield wall at Shea and turned it into a fucking double play. What's anyone in this thread ever done?

He's not a lunatic - he's a typical, low rent, Peronist-style dictator who, until recently, was pumped up by delusions of grandeur and oil revenues. With oil prices down and his economic plans turning to shit, hopefully he will be gone sooner rather than later.

Still, I admit I laughed out loud at his line at the UN about Bush - "The Devil was here yesterday. In fact, it still stinks of sulphur."

I used to think that, but the past year or so his tone has been far less rational. I don't think he's been the same since he lost his push for indefinite presidential terms. I wouldn't go as far as Syd, but I can't see how someone who has built himself on denouncing America literally being Satan can continue with Obama in office. He needs Bush to perpetuate the notion that America is a jingoist empire and without that, the people will be less forgiving for the economic setbacks. I believe that while a change of power in Venezuela is near, it will be peaceful and legal.

I know a girl from Venezuela. Shes a big time singer down there and she wants me to write a play for her to bring back to the country to perform.

This is all I know about Venezuela.

And I think I'm going to call the play, 'Chavez's Lament'.

Yeah, America actually having a bit of moral authority is going to be tough on a lot of people in the world.

It would kind of be him being taken out by his own gimmick. Chavez is fond of turning any political dispute into a call to arms. He's really coarsened and debased any hope of political discourse there.

I'm guessing military coup fairly soon.

You quoted the wrong part of that story.

Chavez frequently uses polarizing rhetoric as a campaign tactic to mobilise party activists to vote, but rarely carries through on his threats.

Hmmm...scare tactics in political campaigns...that never happens in the U.S.

Oh, wait

I wouldn't bet on it, unless he actually did act on one of these threats.

The one thing that could change, however, is that he brought a lot of international power and prestige to himself by kind of usurping the Latin American voice of dissention role from Fidel Castro.

Most of that was from him railing against Bush policies...an Obama administration could be bad for his international standing.
