View Full Version : Sports movies
For some reason, I've been catching a lot of them lately, so I'm willing to bring this topic up for discussion (I think we did a baseball movie centric thread a while back, but this is all encompassing):
Best Baseball Movie: Bull Durham
Other Possibilities: 61*, Bad News Bears, Eight Men Out, Field Of Dreams, For The Love Of The Game, A League Of Their Own, Major League, Mr. Baseball, The Natural, Pride Of The Yankees, Rookie Of The Year, The Sandlot,
Best Football Movie: Friday Night Lights (if anyone says Any Given Sunday I recommend they should get an immediate banning)
Other Possibilities: All The Right Moves, Brian's Song, Gridiron Gang, Invincible, Jerry Maguire, Leatherheads, The Longest Yard, Little Giants, Lucas, Necessary Roughness, North Dallas Forty, Remember The Titans, The Replacements, Rudy, Varsity Blues, The Waterboy, We Are Marshall
Best Basketball Movie: Hoosiers
Other Possibilities: Above The Rim, Basketball Diaries, Blue Chips, Coach Carter, Finding Forrester, He Got Game, Semi-Pro, Teen Wolf, White Men Can't Jump
Best Hockey Movie: Slap Shot
Other Possibilities: The Mighty Ducks, Sudden Death, Youngblood
Best Boxing Movie: Raging Bull
Other Possibilities: The Boxer, Diggstown, The Champ, The Great White Hope, The Harder They Fall, The Hurricane, Million Dollar Baby, Rocky
Best Soccer Movie: There has never been a good one made (suck on it, Bend It Like Beckham)
Best Surfing Movie: See Best Soccer Movie, although I will say I have the same disease Ronnie B has where I can never turn off a surfing movie. Especially Point Break which may be the worst movie ever made, but holds a special place in my heart.
Best Golf Movie: Caddyshack
Other Possibilities: The Greatest Game Ever Played, Happy Gilmore, The Legend Of Bagger Vance, Tin Cup
I'm kind of surprised by the lack of good football movies, considering it's the most popular sport.
Obviously, baseball has the most depth.

Youngblood has a great sex scene.

Yeah, Prefontaine was a really solid movie.
I caught it on HBO a few years ago. I had never heard of the guy, or the movie, but I stuck with it and it turned out to be a pretty good film.

If we add docs we may be better off...
Best Basketball Movie: Hoop Dreams
Best Surfing Movie: Dogtown and Z Boys
Let's go to Asia for Soccer...
Best Soccer Movie: Shoalin Soccer
I'd also like to have M*A*S*H* been given special consideration for the football category.

Hockey movie. Miracle or The HBO doc about the 80 hockey team it was on again last night. Any movie about Steve Prefontaine is worth a watch. There are about 3 and they're all good. Surfing movies. Step into Liquid and Riding Giants Endless Summer

This could be the single worst list ever assembled...You put North Dallas Forty at the bottom of the list behind Marky Mark on the Eagles, The Rock coaches Juvies, a chick flick version of Arli$$, George Clooney's pre-helmet football movie that NO ONE saw, Little Giants and fucking LUCAS? Jerry Macguire isnt even a football movie, its a chick flick with football in it. Lucas is a coming of age/summer movie/piece of shit that mentions football. Did you just name every movie that has a football scene in it except for the Program?

Uh...just naming movies.
It wasn't a list in order, or even a list of movies I like.
Just putting out the more well-known ones, chief....did ya not get the whole alphabetical order thing?

Also add "Miracle" to hockey movies.
Bad News Bears ('76) has got to be my favorite
"All we got on this team are a buncha Jews, spics, niggers, pansies, and a booger-eatin' moron!"
I love Tanner!

Soccer - Green Street Hooligans was pretty good, as was "A Shot at Glory" with Robert Duvall.
Ladybugs was not so great.

I beg to differ. Sylvester Stallone as a goal keeper is solid gold. This probably makes the good bad movie list, but like most sports moves it's one I would never switch off if it's on TV.

Best Soccer Movie: Mean Machine
Best Boxing Movie is tough...I think if there were not so many sequels Rocky would probably tie with Raging Bull. For the pure sports movie banner alone. Now I personally think that Raging Bull is the better movie, but it isnt entirely about boxing as much as it is about LaMotta's battles with his own demons, although it does have some of the better filmed fight scenes ever.
Best Baseball: I agree, Bull Durham all the way
Best Football: the original Longest Yard

Just amazing. One of the best sports flicks ever, especially if you love baseball.
Took a unique angle on traditional sports movies and was more of a rags to rags story. Incredibly realistic.
An American dream story for so many foreign ballplayers. So great

i really didn't know what to expect from it when i got it. the theatre my chick works at over the summer showed it and said i should see it. it totally goes beyond just a sports movie. it also gave a perspective of the minor league system that i never would have thought about. i think my favorite part of the movie was at the end with all the different players in the men's league saying who they played for.
