Well, there it goes. Just got word from the studio that the season is done and it wont be coming back for more. It was expected but now it's real and everyone is out of a job. I haven't watched it since high school so I really can't say if it has been good in the last decade but I guess not being that it's gone.

So long.

this is why MadTV sucked

first of all, all their skits went on too long. Like 3mins too long (which, in tv time is long). They would do a commercial parody that would last minutes. Its horrible...when u watch good skit comedy (like Kids in the Hall or Monty Python), they are willing to have skits that are only 20sec long.

second, the reoccurring characters were shit. Every character was "lets take this annoying person to this location and everyone will be annoyed by them". I just get annoyed instead of laughing at them. Its a mistake alot of new SNL castmembers will do to, their characters they try is just an annoying person and people are annoyed with their inappropriate behavior. i HATE skits like that

third, in addition to the reoccurring characters being horrible, every skit was exactly the same. Just location changed. Like "lets put Miss Swan in a starbucks" "lets put Miss Swan at the petting zoo" but its the same exact shit. week after week

fourth...i dunno, it really wasn't funny

Agreed, and I could do another whole thread on how Comedy Central has gone WAY down hill in recent years.

MadTV supplanting SNL reruns was about the time it started. And I don't even know when the hell E! runs SNL, and the few times I've seen it on there, it's newer episodes.

How about mixing in some 90s and 80s. I'd say 70s, too, but Comedy Central never went that far back either.

I have no clue why they ever took KITH off to begin with. I think it disappeared around the same time the DVDs came out (same with The Critic, although, the argument can be made there that you can only show the same 23 episodes so many times).

Daily Show/Colbert and South Park are the only things worth watching on that channel now, besides the occasional standups (caught John Olivier's the other day...that guy is the next Colbert, only British).

MadTV had a tremendous amount of potential. Their fake commericals were f'ing STRONG. Really well written and with good timing.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/QHG8cjI5B-w&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/QHG8cjI5B-w&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

But, the sketches never rose to the challenge. Stuart was funny but, they beat it to death.
Mo Collins had a character that used to go into stores and ask a squillion annoying questions & eventually wear out her welcome. Loved it. But.... they did it about 1000x too many and so the character wore out her welcome.

As for SNL, I honestly can't understand the 30 years of blasting that the show takes. The Sex-Offender-Goes-Trick-Or-Treating sketch was historic. HILARIOUS! And... it aired two weeks ago.
It's always been cool to be too-cool-to-dig-SNL. I get that. But that show delivers the goods. It's a B+.

MR. SHOW is thee best sketch comedy ever made. Period.
HUMAN GIANT is the heir to that throne.
THE WHITEST KIDS has it's moments. The 1st season was dangerous. 2nd season... meh.
KITH are totally creative. I loved that troop. GREAT LIVE SHOW.
UCB made me feel stoned! I still go the UCB theater in Chelsea. A lotta good troops there.

I f'ing LOVE sketch comedy. There's almost always gold in those hills but, MadTV definitely ran it's course.
A "best of" DVD would be worth getting though.

It's just too long. Even when the show is good, you're still getting around half an hour of crap. When it's bad, you're getting an hour + of crap. That's a lot to wade through. I agree, that sketch was hilarious, but I think there was about 20 minutes of sketches that weren't cringe-worthy. The show gets into ruts where they want to pound characters or gimmicks into the ground and they get away from true absurdity. SNL seems to work best when they just toss everything out the window and go for the gonzo stuff. Hell, it can even work with the recurring characters.

DVR - it completely changes the SNL experience

you fast forward through commercials and lame musical guests...i fast forward through the news...and if a skit is going nowhere you can skip that too. Its a great show on DVR

I watched the first 3 seasons of MadTV pretty religiously. I thought it was fresh compared to the stale shit on SNL. After that though it did wear out pretty fast. Then when Bobby Lee joined the cast I started to watch again, but it didn't really hold my interest. I think I only watched a handful of episodes the next couple of seasons. I haven't seen the show, new or reruns, for probably 3 years. I had no idea it was still on myself. On a side note I was IN LOVE with Mo Collins, then I found out Aries was hitting it, and all I could think was damn, they took another one!
