Has anyone ever gone and seen it in person?
I had completely forgotten about this but, for reasons that I can't begin to comprehend, I somehow promised my kids last Thanksgiving that I would take them to see it this year. Of course they were sure to remind me and I don't think they're going to take "No" for an answer.
How crazy crowded is it? Are my kids even going to be able to see anything except the balloons above the crowds? How early do I need to get there? Where's a good spot to be able to see everything with minimal crowds? I assume the closer you get to Macy's the worse it is? Most importantly - how the fuck do I get out of this?
Thanks for reading my thread. I'll hang up now and read your responses.

It's crowded, it's cold, it's boring, traffic is a freeking mess.
Have fun. I'll be sitting on my couch laughing at you.

i used every year, but havent the last two years. best place to see it is around 61st street in my opinion. the crowd gets heavier as you get to the lower number streets. get there early!! the parade starts at 9, so you might want to get there around 7

I would say get there at 5am and be prepared to freeze your ass off all day with traveling hayseeds, while you could watch it on TV.
Can't you bribe them with cash or toys or something?

I went a bunch of years ago, we watched it someplace across the streeet from Central Park. It wasn't too bad up there, the train in was packed but it was fun. Don't bother going down town near Macy's. Macy's itself where the shows are is invite only and the area around there gets pretty nuts. We got there a couple of hours before it started and had no problem finding a place to stand. If you want to be like some people and set up chairs and blankets then you'll need to get there before dawn, but for us standing wasn't a problem, but we also did not have children with us.

Bloomberg has jurisdiction over Disney World now? Shit, I knew that term limit repeal was a bad thing. This man has gone mad with power.
Seriously though, you guys have confirmed my worst fears. I think I'm going to have to do some serious bribing to get out of this promise. Toy R Us here I come! Guess who's getting a Playstation 3 this Thanksgiving?

Go the bribing route. That would work for me!
Seriously, once I got HD and a 50 inch screen I don't want to go to events in person anymore. It's so nice being on my comfy couch watching a football game where it feels like I'm in the huddle or a parade where I'm right on the float. Try to convince them the magic of HD is better. You can see so much more than you would if you were there.
