Boston Globe had a pretty good article about this. (http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/ideas/articles/2008/11/16/depression_2009_what_would_it_look_like/?page=full)
What would you do to survive a modern day depression if it should happen to become a reality? I think that a local micro-market bartering goods and services could spring up. I could make some of my own stuff - maybe some basic furniture, homemade bread, beer, grow some veggies, etc.
What do you think it would look like and what would you be willing to do without or how would you work around it?

Being single and childless has been a blessing.
Being divorced and paying alimony has just been lovely.

I would want to be heavily armed to protect my supplies from those who would see nothing wrong with stealing them. If it came to it I think I could grow enough to survive on.
I'm pretty sure I'll spend most days like this:

Learn a skill-like plumbing or electrician.
Learning how to solder and wire a circuit makes you a fucking genius in the eyes of CEOs who went to college to earn money to pay others to do the work.

When I get out of jail I will meet up with my family and head to California.
We'll eat grapes and oranges right off of the tree.
There's work out there I tell ya, plenty to go 'round.

Won't the government save us?
I'd start selling weed.
Doesn't matter how bad shit is..people will still want weed.

Won't the government save us?
No, because we'll be waging a "war on fear"
Because everybody knows that during a depression there's nothing to fear but fear itself.
See what I did there?
Well after an exhaustive three month search, I finally got a new job today.
...so let's start the countdown to my inevitable layoff. I'll set the over/under of 60 days.

What did you get hired to do, sell Chryslers?
You can sell it like a Chris Rock bit: "Yo, it's on 22s, baby, 22s!"
