This is one of the big question marks of the awards season.....
Will Bradpittdavidfinchercateblanchettefscottfitzgerald spell Oscar this year?

I have a hard time investing belief in the idea that Fincher could make an Academy-friendly film. True, BB looks like it has all the earmarks of something that would receive a dozen nominations and maybe prevail in half of those categories but I have a feeling that Fincher has a few curveballs in store for us. It'll be quite a feat though if he can deliver the best film of the year two years in a row; I know 2007 had an embarrassment of riches but for my money Zodiac towered above everything with its unclassifiable structuring and scientific obsessiveness. Back to BB - the earliest gripes against it are that the age-shifting cgi/makeup on Pitt are often more of a distraction than a complement to the storytelling.

Zodiac is so amazing. It's a crime how it came and went so quickly and was all but forgotten. Everything about it is incredible.
I'm very curious about the news one, largely due to Fincher and how much I enjoyed the original story. That said, it'll probably die a quick death in theaters like most of his films due to how long it's gonna be and how odd it is.

Fuck the Oscars and fuck audiences.
Fincher is a God. Zodiac was an under appreciated masterpiece. And Benjamin Button will be the film of the year.

Boy I hope not. This would especially be devastating for Paramount which is sparing no expense with a splashy holiday rollout and an aggressive Oscar campaign. Hopefully it will be buoyed by good reviews/WOM to at least reach the financial respectability that unfairly evaded Z. The way I see it, the more successful a Fincher film is, the greater the chances that his follow-up will give him more creative leeway with his canvas. There's no way he could've gotten Fight Club off the ground with all of its subversive greatness intact pre-Seven.

Has this movie come out yet? I havent seen any promo's for it or any trailers. I read the short story wheh I first heard about the film to get better insight and was wondering is Pitt gonna play BB the whole time using make up and such or will they be switching actors for the "young" man and middle aged BB? I'm sure they'll have to get a child actor for the "older" version of BB

For the body yes but Pitt still had to act out the facial aspect of the performance in a motion control studio and it was grafted onto the other performer digitally. Fincher first pioneered this technology in an Orvlle Redenbacher commercial he directed...

I'm a sentimental sack o' feces, though...I'm terrified I'll come out of this movie crying like a big fat baby so I'm going to give it a pass.
I'll be rooting for it, though, to be a huge success; Fincher is indeed amazing. Ditto on everything said about Zodiac above.

I'm about ready to do anything short of going down on Fincher to see this now. A soul-rousing "death story" from a filmmaking master that features cutting edge effects technology used entirely to service the storytelling is a recipe for a level of anticipation I haven't felt in quite a while. I guess I was wrong about what I said above about Pitt's countenance being grafted onto a child actor duringng the character's "golden years," evidently from what I've read a cgi-less kid is used during Button's "prepubescence."
Also, I'd like to see Fincher win the Oscar for directing if only to find out if he could upstage his memorable victory speech at the MTV awards...

He'd probably deliver the the best words of acceptance since Steven Soderbergh. Since he already has kind of a notorious reputation in the industry for his stern and exacting on-set manner, I wonder if his chances will be hurt by a story (http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/12/01/david-fincher-in-page-six/) in page 6 yesterday that he punched a former Paramount bigwig who didn't greenlight Button earlier after an LA screening. If Jim Cameron can win it with his well-documented tyrannical demeanor I suppose anybody can. Fincher probably oversees a movie set like Ron Howard compared to JC.

Ok, so reassure me, if you can. This isn't just a "tug on the heart strings" manipulation like, say, "AI", or "Terms of Endearment"?
With my job (hospice medical director) and my stress level, I just can't handle being manipulated by death and tragedy. I've seen the trailer, and I assume the end of the movie has him as an old man/little boy, walking down the street holding hands with the old lady that was/is his lover through the whole thing. Ugh, just thinking about it makes me fahklempt. I don't think I can handle this film.

The reviews for this have covered a wide array of the spectrum, ranging from "instant classic" to "insufferable bore-fest." Ebert disliked it because he thought it was mistaken for the premise to presuppose that a person aging backwards would be able to sustain normal human connectivity since they'd always be on a different developmental direction plane. This was a hurdle he couldn't overcome towards caring about or buying into the relationship between Pitt and Blanchett.

I was let down. I didn't think it was bad, but I thought it could have been great and ended up being "just" good.
Too many critical things in the original story were changed or cut out. Giving him the foster family was pointless, especially since it totally destroyed the relationship between Benjamin and his actual father (which mirror's Benjamin's relationship with HIS son later). That relationship is one of the key things that makes the original story so interesting. I also thought it was a mistake to go effects-heavy and have the creepy little old dude running around. In the book he's just born a full-sized old man and that's that. Benjamin's father comes to see him in the hospital and there's an old man sitting in a crib in the maternity ward. It struck me as ultimately just distracting to have the little old guy with Pitt's digitally altered face pasted on. I also didn't like how the film hinged so much on the romance, something that is ultimately far more incidental in the book due to how his mind and maturity was effected by his condition.
I enjoyed it overall, but it could have been so much more.

I know with "Marley & Me" that the book was written for the whole life of the dog, from birth to death and i saw a thing that said they portray the dog from puppy to old age, so i assume the dog is going to die at the end, because of that i will NEVER EVER see that movie and i can't imagine why anyone would want to

I wasnt a big gump fan since it was a reality based film which had him meeting almost every famous and influential figure in the 60s-70s. This is more fantasy based so I think they took more liberties with all the plot points and allusions.

I loved this movie from start to finish.
It was long... deliberate.... and brilliant.
The story drew me in and the characters & their emotions rang true. I truly loved it.
Also of interest; I liked how the writer (Eric Roth?) worked in little plot points about how a person with Benjamin's condition can earn a living and survive. When all's said & done, it was a realistic as a fairytale could be. It felt more grounded than, say, BIG FISH (which I also f'ing loved.)

There's one scene where they reveal Blanchett's character, at the height of her beauty, and the guys in the theater all kinda "gasped". One dude, about 1 second later, just said out-loud "HOLY MOLEY!!". It got a bit of a laugh from the rest of the audience.

The more I thought about it, the more sad I was.
I thought that the connection between Brad Pitt and Tilda Swinton(The lady in the Hotel) was more interesting than the connection between Cate and Brad. I thought Cate just left me kind of flat in this movie.
And the whole Tugboat thing was just silly...and so Forrest Gump.
And another thing that bothered me was the voice overdubbing. It was really distracting.

The movie has the same screenwriter, Eric Roth, who wrote Gump. That is how he was able to turn a short story into such a long movie. It is ridiculous how similar the two movies are. The more I think back about the movie, the more I dislike it. Visually it was great, the directing by Fincher was very good, and Brad Pitt was good as usual, but the story was self plagiarized. http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2009-01-01-button-gump_N.htm

I actually cried after the movie...
Spoilers:
As far as movies go, my heart-strings aren't usually tugged at so easily. However, watching this movie, I was engrossed and the time flew.
Brad and Cate were just this pure innocent love, unexamined and unexplainable. You weren't made to question the nature of their love, you just accepted it and they had amazing chemistry.
Brad and Tilda's character on the other hand did seem more interesting as far as character development and motive. These two people had a connection beyond love and attraction, but for the sake of not distracting from Brad and Cate, I was fine with the way that relationship ended.
The movie did leave me wondering what happened with Cate's husband after she started to take care of Brad as a child and how he handled that, but being a 2hr.40min. movie, there are some things that just need to be left unanswered.
Also, I found some of the parts when Brad was narrating to be a bit too dramatic, in the sense it's all been done before. When he was talking about how life is a series of events all inter-twined (right before Cate's accident) it reminded me to much of a PT Andersen movie.

Didn't she say in the voice-over that he died? And that her daughter had gone off to school.

going to movies. I have contributed to about 10 movies in my life, mostly blockbusters.I saw the trailer for this one,and I can at least bite on the premise, since I'm a Twilight Zone fan.I'm sure I'll see it online someday in a few years,no rush.I can tell by the trailer I'll zip thru most of it and watch the parts I like in a half hour. It's a little too fake romance for my taste.Women will therefor LOVE IT.Take your date or wifey and snooze thru. Brad Pitt will make the Mars women wet. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a221/jlehane3/BigMarsGirl12.jpg

I saw this last week and i loved it. I did sit through the entire movie with that "im going to cry" lump in my throat, which happened a few times nevertheless.
The scene on the tugboat at night when they come across the submarine was amazing to me for some reason. The way the gunfire looked completely awed me and i can't explain why.
Overall i thought it was great but i known it would be that somber of a movie i would have definitely watched it at home.
I guess it also doesn't help that i was still getting over having scene Revolutionary Road.

Every single sports movie is exactly the same. Exactly. Right down to the last minute hail mary slo-mo.
Every stupid buddy-cop movie is the same. The cop and the detective sure do hate each other!!!
Every disaster flick is the same. Right down to the dog.
Hollywood bio-pics are interchangeable. Right down to Golden Globe nomination after it's release.
These heist/caper movies are all clones of each other. Right down to the double cross at the end.
Remakes, sequels, and "re imaginings" galore.
But 15 years ago, there was one movie about one unique man's journey and, now BUTTON gets dismissed??

One of the few movies that i have ever watched where you just have this unsettling feeling from beginning to end, you know nothing good is destined to be there, it's pure Greek tragedy.
I don't know if you've familiar with the novel, because then you'll know the plot but i thought that the acting was magnificent. DiCaprio and Winslet really represented the Wheelers with that seesaw of conflict and remote semblance of hope.
The movie really fucked me up for a few days though, the mood definitely lingers, even if you're familiar with Yates' work.

I loooooove dark suburban movies. Little Children, In the Bedroom, Snow Angels last year.
And Mendez already went there with American Beauty. I have high hopes for that one since the darkness of the theme won't be a bother to me like some people who reviewed it. Thanks.
Ok, back to the Button talk.

I was ambivalent after my first viewing but I loved it the second time. I'm scared if I see it a third time I might wind up back at square one.
I frankly don't believe that savvy guys like David Fincher and Eric Roth explicitly agreed that they were going to rip off Robert Zemeckis with this project. It probably boiled down to them being encouraged by the money people to play by the Gump formula rule book since so much was going to be at stake financially. For the record I also love Gump. In terms of tone the films are strikingly different since it's not in Fincher's DNA to make anything syrupy. Button was very elegiac and bittersweet about chronicling the entire sweep of its peculiar central character's life whereas Gump was more whimsical and maudlin.

Is there a film you liked that didnt involve the phrase schwing or bogus?
People can hate this film all they want but its a lot better than forrest gump and he was never involved in any of the events throughout history other than reacting to the times.
The biggest gauge for most people that I talked to said that it didnt seem as long as it really was which is a good thing as it means the story flowed very well. Its a fine film with great acting, although I was a little pissed of the woman they got to play her daughter in the hospital looked 50 when she was supposed to be almost my age.
I guess people bitching is why we keep getting all the shit teen movies or shitty nic cage and angelina jolie action films, maybe we need yet another film about how someone is controlling our lives? We are already getting jumper 2 and the first one sucked, I am starting to think the public is getting just what they deserve.
A fine narrative film like benjamin button gets a shit load of backlash, when shit like jumper makes twice its budget.

Yeah that argument has been proven bullshiat, forrest gump is not half the film button is, gump is over hyped hack shiat, he shows up at every major event and met the king of rock, 2 presidents, was a star at bama, met lennon on dick cavett, fell backwards into becoming a millionaire, invented the shiat happens moniker, and farked one of the first known cases of aids who happened to be banging famous rockers in LA.
From a realism standpoint, benjamin button is easier to believe as real than the forrest gump shit, it was an ok movie but button is a film that is 100x better than the one you are comparing it to.

The clip is largely a joke, but it's not talking about the historical stuff in FG or BB...it's pointing out how the key narrative and character developments are remarkably similar between two films written by the same guy. Roth had to go way out of his way to make BB as similar to FG as he did.

Sorry to review this so late, but I saw it two weeks ago and couldn't really get internet access until now. I went into this thing liking Fincher & Zodiac and not having read the book. I walked out of the theater thinking it was fairly derivative, but entertaining. Adequately satisfied is the best way to describe my initial reaction to this movie. However, I was pissed when I found out how many Oscar nominations this carbon-copy of a film got, especially in light of the brilliant unconventional films that were overlooked for the same prestigious awards. I can only hope this wannabe epic gets ROYALLY snubbed Shawshank style, as that is the only way to appropriately treat such regurgitated mediocrity.
