did anyone see that letterman has tribute bands on all this week as musical guests? last night it was Purple Reign, a prince tribute and tonight it's something like Cold Hard Cash, I'm guessing it's a Johnny Cash guy. Am i the only one who enjoys a very good tribute band?

I love tribute bands! I get all the enjoyment of the great songs without having to pay huge amounts of money and sit in a huge stadium. Not that I'd pick the tribute band over the real thing usually, but they're a good substitute. I used to see Big Shot (a Billy Joel tribute band) out on Long Island all the time. They were awesome!

Purple Reign fucking KILLS.

I wish they'd actually tour, but they've got a pretty sweet base of regular gigs in Vegas.

I've never seen a tribute band, but I can appreciate a band that can do good renditions of a few particular bands. There was one I saw a few times in the 90's that did some kick ass Zappa covers. They were from Mass, and I think they were called Headstone Circus. Thing is, when I just Googled that, it turns out that Headstone Circus was a band from 1968. Now I'm confused.

Purple Reign did rock last night. Cold Hard Cash was pretty good tonight too. I'm looking forward to Mr. Brownstone. A Journey band comes around my area sometimes. I believe it's the band with that Hugo dude who played with brother Joe Cumia sings with now. they are a pretty impressive journey band.

They sound horrible. Great job copying G&R!

Ok.. I guess. More like a pretty good cover band. Not in the same league as Purple Reign though.

Yeah they weren't that good, a bit disappointed, but they put on a great show.

Caught Purple Reign on Letterman without knowing what it was and HOLY SHIT has that guy got it goin' on! Being Prince is harder than being W. Axl Rose because Prince is, you know.

A genius.

My favorite cover band is This Charming Band, a Smiths and Morrissey project led by a bald, spectacled, fat Morrissey whom I love.

My second-favorite cover band is The Exploding Boys, a Cure cover band headed by my friend Cedric, who is more Robert than Robert at this point. He is six foot five inches of Robert Smithiness.

My third-favorite cover band is Sapphire Bullets of Pure Love, who opened for They Might Be Giants, and play kind of obscure TMBG songs, and who kind of make fun of TMBG, and who are comprised of John Flansberg and John Linnell, also known as They Might Be Giants.

who is more Robert than Robert at this point.

Impossible. The dude weighs like 900 pounds by now.

OK...ok, if we are being literal, Cedric is Robert when Robert had hair and was sexy, and did not look like a person made of mashed potatoes.

I kinda stopped playing bass for a year or two because I became disenchanted with the professional scene AND the coverband scene.

About two weeks ago, I started putting pieces in place for a Duran Duran tribute band. (they are easily one of my all time fave bands, BTW) and even though our first rehearsal is tomorrow night, we're already getting a few offers. Our bandmembers are top-shelf players and we're all kinda connected. (I stress "kinda". We're not exactly marquee names and we know it.)

We only wanna gig once per month but, at 5000 per show.... I suspect we'll add a few more shows here and there.

If Letterman does another tribute-week next year, my band will mos def be performing.

Take it to the bank.

Ooh! I'd be at a D2 coverband show.

With Fez.

Will you be called The Chauffeurs? The Acid Reflex? Or something more obvious, like Seven and the Ragged Tiger or The Wild Boys? The mind boggles *and* scrabbles.

Um. Nick Rhodes 4-Ever.
