I've been thinking of my Oscar picks and this looks like one of the strongest....
an unflinching look at a nazi prison guard at two points in her life....
they say this is Kate Winslet's year.

a devestating and sensitive film about guilt and forgiveness....
Winslet is better than she has ever been
lots of nudity and sex in the first hour of the film.
Ralph Fienes has also shown a lot of range this year with In Bruges, The Duchess and this.

Time Out New York gave this one star, but they are usually pretty harsh.

The movie is very good but it is not a feel good experience.

Hopefully the theatre isn't too crowded so I can jack to this. Otherwise, I'll just have to wait for DVD.

i saw it last tuesday. very slow film. lots of nudity in the first hour, sex scenes and just general walking around nudity from kate winslet. but again, its very slow moving. i wouldnt say it was great but it was good. definitely not Best Picture Oscar material.

Yeah there's no way this movie is going to win an Oscar over Slumdog Millionaire.

Finally saw The Reader last night, absolutely blew me away! I was a bit scared to see it, because I had heard it was a bit slow paced, but the story is fucking amazing. The story is so well done, there were points in the film where my jaw dropped. Winslet is amazing too. I totally agree with this being in Oscar contention and so far this is the best movie I've seen that's been nominated, but I haven't seen Benjamin Button yet.

Slow paced at first and at the very end. But the middle hour or so is fantastic. Winslet was great and deserves an Oscar on one these years.

you need to come with something along the lines of 'what time are you picking me up?" or "if you like those movies we should make our own."

you know something subtle and suave, like you.

not sure why this slipped by me. I just looked at the trailer and it seems to be a wonderful movie. Is it still in theaters at this point? I may wait for the DVD.

Not sure if you ever come into NYC, but it's still playing at The Paris. That's where I saw it last week. It's really a beautiful theater.

I thought the first half of this was exceptional. The second half suffered by comparison a bit when it became really somber and austere but overall I still felt it was a strong effort. Enraged Batman fanboys who are singling out this as the one that unjustly stole the slot that should've gone to TDK are barking up the wrong tree.

I saw it last night (only 3 people in the entire theater for the last call) .

I loved the movie. It is definitely not a chick flick but also most likely not a movie to be enjoyed by a "manly man" who prefers action and comedy but that was pretty clear going into it.

I loved the storyline and how the beginning of the movie, the love affair between Hannah and Michael played such an important role throughout the movie all the way to the end.

I think it brilliantly shows how people took jobs just to have a job back in those days and simply followed orders as they were expected. Hannah seems a very simple minded person yet intrigued by art and knowledge, though her answers in court clearly show the mindset of a person able to chose and lead 300 jews into their death without understanding that she was actually able to stop it by not taking orders, all of the guards could have stopped it, yet you see how the guards on the stand with her only cared and looked out for their own interest.

It was a great movie, and yes, I shed a tear or two.

Excellent film. I'm sick of reading frenzied TDK fanboys screaming about how this "robbed" TDK of a Best Picture nod. If anything robbed it, it was schlock like ...Benjamin Button (though the Wrestler is far more robbed of a nod than TDK is).

Benjamin Button is the final "best picture" movie I haven' seen this year, I'm going on Friday. Not really looking forward to it.

I hate movies that take place in a foreign speaking place and everyone speaks English. I know it would kill their box office so the movie wouldn't be made the same but it irritates the hell out of me.

Cruise didn't even have an accent for Valkyrie. Why bother then?

It's not schlock. It was made with impeccable professionalism and meticulous precision. Disaster Movie is schlock. Just because you weren't won over by the story doesn't mean you can't give due recognition for the level of artistry that went into bringing it to the screen.

To me it was just schlock dressed up in a pretty bow. Fincher coasted on an unchallenging film with an unoriginal story. Part of my disapointment is due to his involvement and how underwhelming it was.

the inconsistency and mix of accents as well of switching throughout the movie was far more annoying in Valkyrie.

In The Reader they all had consistent German accents and in fact the lead actor had to learn English for his role, he's only been in German movies before. He was actually 17 when the movie was made so I think he did a really good job in both roles.

exactly. even his attempt at speaking German in the beginning of the movie was poor.

I thought it was flawless in the Reader, don't get me wrong. It's just something that takes my brain some getting around. They definitely sounded like Berliner's speaking English to me (which was the point) but I have to get past that they should be speaking German.

That kid had to film all of his non sex scenes first and waited til he turned 18 to film his sex scenes with Kate.

really? I did not read that at all. In Germany you are legal at 16 to do so; so it never even crossed my mind that he had to be 18 here to film it... especially since it was mostly filmed in Germany

that's weird, the reviews say that she translated it gracefully...

I wouldn't know without knowing what it was supposed to read like in German. Sometimes what one person describes as "graceful" another will describe as clunky. It's like the differences between the initial translation of Elie Wiesel's Night, which I understood to have been a translation from a French translation of his Yiddish, and the Oprah's Book Club version, which was translated by his wife. Somehow, it read a bit differently and a bit more richly in his wife's translation than it did the first time.

It may have been an accurate translation for The Reader, but it clunked here and there, so I started to think about what it's like to read works in translation and then I wanted to learn to read German so I could figure it out. But maybe I'm the only person who thinks that way; I don't know.
