Maybe, but it would cost more for me to go to concerts to hear the music, and I don't have the time to do it.

Hearing the music at a concert is the ideal. But the ideal is often unreachable. So having the iPod filled with music I can hear at any time is a very good thing.

I'm not saying it's a necessity -- it isn't. It's a nice luxury to have.

I completely see this side but I still maintain that for many - it is an unnecessary luxury. And, I am a hypocrite. I have an ipod and I go to concerts. However, I value the experience more than the music itself.

But, I am making my argument against the people who feel the 'need' to have all the music of all the artists that someone once told them was good. I have a small library of music - all artists I've either seen live or truly enjoy.

More importantly - how about having an iPhone, iPod, PSP, PDA, and what ever other things that basically do the same thing? That becomes glutinous, not to mention cumbersome.
