Brace yourself...it's fucking HORRIFYING... (http://www.tvsquad.com/2008/11/20/and-the-highest-rated-show-in-comedy-central-history-is-vi/)

The AV Club sums up this travesty nicely. (http://www.avclub.com/content/hater/nothing_says_christmas_like_a)

Seriously, what the fuck? Even if it was something awful like the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, I could at least understand it because unfortunately those guys draw huge numbers...but THIS?!? A prop comic with fucking dummies?!? What the FUCK, America?

I saw the opening 30 seconds of this thing. It came on after The Colbert Report one night this week. There were a ton of people in the audience and they were holding up their own puppets! Super creepy!

The guy who brings my mail at work introduced me to this travesty. He said, it's soo funny, he's my favorite comic- well, I gotta go eat some ham'n'eggs and hang on a strap!

I was hoping it was Strangers with Candy.

Hmm. Comedy Central sounds like one of those channels that used to exist. Bu they seemed to just dissapear right around the time I got hi-def. What a strange coincidence...

Let's see... what has been the number one fear that has been on our minds the past eight years?

What is one way to make light of a bad situation or a bad person? You know, to get a chuckle in these trying times.

And you can also add in the simplicity factor. They might not know why they hate him, but they sure think he talk funny.

That youtube video reminded me where I've seen this guy before - probably 15 years ago I saw his act with the Mexican "on a steeeek" jumping bean puppet. I laughed, most likely because I was with friends and drunk and who doesn't like talking in a stereotypical Mexican accent?
But then it was forgotten the next day.

This guy simply has taken an act, and held it under the shaking masses fears and will now be collecting all the money that shakes out their pockets.

It's actually very brilliant. I don't think it's funny, but a damn easy way to make a buck.

Edit: oh jeese he actually uses "it's just a flesh wound" line.... and listen to the laugh it gets. He's the mayor of simpleton.

I was actually going to start a similar thread, as I saw a bit of this last night. I couldn't believe how hacky this was, especially his tendency to howl at his own (well, the puppet's) jokes. I would have never believed this could possibly be the channel's highest rated show.

I'd seen a few of his stand up routines, and I admit that I laughed.

When he came out with the terrorist puppet last year (or whenever), people started emailing clips of him around work. The supervisor who worked from me even had one of his DVD's he'd try to pull out every chance he got, and thought he was hillarious.

So when I heard he was going to be in town around Christmas time, I got tickets for me and my chick and him and his chick to go, and gave them to him as a Christmas gift.

He did a standup routine before he brought out the puppets, and he was actually pretty good.

Most of his puppet routines were repeated stuff I'd seen before, but there was enough new material that it kept my interest.

Everything was going fine... until... the last puppet.

Remember, this was in Mobile, AL, and when he brought out the redneck nascar fan puppet guy... the place went nuts.

http://magazine.angrycountry.com/images/articles/20080410160644147_1.jpg

You could tell this was an "encore" type routine he'd planned to end his show with due to the location.

No new material this time... just the same stuff from DVD's he'd sold, I guess.

The rednecks in the audience knew EVERY SINGLE LINE, and shouted them out along with "Bubba J" in unison, like they were singing along with Skynyrd.

All Jeff could say in between laughing at these idiots, was... "well, I guess we know who's been buying all of our DVD's"...

Embarrassing.

But he and his chick had a great time, so what the hell. They're Christian folk by nature, and I guess Jeff-fa-fa Dun-HAM (dot com) falls under the "Good, Clean, Fun" catagory.

Au contraire - I saw Jeff Dunham about 20 years ago in the Student Union Comedy Night at a local university. So if you want to be technical, he has certainly been near a university.

He has apparently been doing his gig an exceptionally long time. I remember half the characters he did, mainly because he still does them.

Awesome, he was great on the show. I loved the way Jerry and he played off of each other. One of the episodes was filmed in a store I worked in but before I got there so I will always have a special connection to that show, but it's just too insane how funny that show is. Totally under-appreciated.

God is this ewwie.
Although to be fair, I think that a holiday episode in which people were mostly drunk and not paying attention to the box glowing in the background of their lushy conversations as opposed to the highest rated series in CC history being South Park is a distinction worthy of mentioning.

My sister met him while she was running late night activities at her college. She graduated in '97.

She also met Jay Mohr the same way. She said he was a colossal dick.

But probably not.

Probably right. Colbert has been killing in the ratings, of course because of the election, but even continues to pull in great ratings after the election.

So on the plus side, he's more popular than ever.

On the down side, his show is very, very smart.

Jeff Dunham sounds like an idiot in the NYT. (http://videogum.com/archives/backlashes/jeff_dunham_article_098631.html#more)

He defends himself by noting that he tries to insult all races and ethnicities equally, and ultimately seems to treat jokes about all Indians being customer-service operators or all black people drinking malt liquor not all that differently from jokes involving other well-worn comedic tropes -- like all wives being annoying nags or Florida being way too humid.

Dunham does concede that he's extra-sensitive to one of his largest constituencies: the conservative "country crowd." "That's why I don't pick on basic Christian-values stuff," he told me. "Well, I also don't like to, because that's the way I was brought up." He then stopped himself short and said: "Oh, boy. I'm walking into something here."

Dunham started to explain -- as if realizing it for the first time -- that this would appear to make the jokes he does about Islam with Achmed "hypocritical." But he quickly unburdened himself of the idea. "I try to make the majority of my audience laugh," he said. "That's my audience. They'll laugh at the dead terrorist."

Plus I really liked this point made on the blog breaking down the article (Videogum is a silly, silly site, but hey, everyone has their moment):

Gradually, a lot of Dunham's material has come to reflect his exhaustion with political correctness.

Can we please not pretend like this is a thing? The fight against political correctness is such a nonsensical throwback argument to the early-'90s. No one is pushing for "political correctness" as a decontextualized blindly dogmatic philosophy. What people are pushing for is not pretending that racism and homophobia and misogyny and anti-semitism don't exist, or trying to camouflage these things as "jokes." Suggesting that hate speech is offensive and upsetting and dangerous if used in an unilluminating and...well, hateful way is not "politically correct," it's just correct. If Jeff Dunham wants his puppets to "say" the word nigger, or whatever, he should just do it. That's his constitutionally-protected right. But please, let us not pretend that it has anything to do with a non-existent, hyperbolic, media-created movement from 15 years ago.
