To add to the list of flicks to check out, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away are amazing movies. But then again I'll watch anything Miyazaki is responsible for.

Like all media, anime is 99% garbage that will sell and appease the casual audience.


Once in a while someone figures out that the artform is capable of doing things that traditional cinema simply cannot accomplish.

As a result there are some seriously beautiful animes out there, being needlessly associated with the cunt-cheese of the genre.

FLCL, Wolfs Rain, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, etc

Most of the above deal with complex philosophical and humanistic issues while telling a highly entertaining story. You can absolutely make a piece of shit animated film just as easily as a piece of shit real life film. Same with a TV series.


Think of how much COMPLETE ASS-PISS our movie and television industry pumps out by the day. Most of the world things of that ass-piss when they think of our industry. Same with anime. Most of their shit is ass-piss too, but that doesn't mean there can't be a Gary Unmarried-esque gem of beauty in there somewhere. :tongue:


Basically my point is that I hate when an entire genre or form of art is condemned based on limited exposure.

Love a few movies. Grave of the Fireflies is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen, animated or live action, that I've ever seen, period. If i doesn't break at least a little of your heart, you're not human.

I absolutely fucking LOVE Cowboy Bebop. Awesome style and, best of all, it didn't overstay its welcome. One movie, 26 episodes and that's it. And man, what agreat opening theme song. The Seatbelts are a snappy band.

I love that they are willing to get to a deep, hilosophical level with their animation. Anything by Miyazaki, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Serial Experiments Lain, Death, Note, etc.

Of course, for every great anime, there's more that are just plain generic fight anime where we wait wait wait train to go to the next power level wait wait wait fight repeat.
