Citi receives $20 billion bailout. (http://www.businessweek.com/investor/content/nov2008/pi20081124_537211.htm?chan=top+news_top+news+index +-+temp_top+story)

Citi still committed to naming rights to new Mets stadium; will cost $400 million. (http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/mets/ny-sprieber1125,0,2303180.column)

Meanwhile:

No auto bailout coming soon. (http://cbs2chicago.com/topstories/auto.industry.bailout.2.872586.html)

Am I the only one [al sharpton]OUTRAAAAAAAGED[/al sharpton] over this?

As a tax payer, I am now paying for a horseshit company, so they can still buy the naming rights to the stadium of a horseshit team.

There's no greater beacon of evil than this:

It is a pretty fucked up situation. 400 million to Shea vs. 52,000 workers... it's insane. If I was one of those people laid off, I'd take a fucking flamethrower to that place.

If anything though, if Citi goes tits up, the stadium name won't last for long; don't forget, the Astros' original stadium was called Enron Field.

But still, a company that asks for a bailout SHOULD NOT BE NAMING STADIUMS. It's the epitome of fail.

There's another company that's perfect to name that field. The only problem? A majority of their higher ups are Yankee fans.

Naming rights are ultimately stupid. The Yankees don't need naming rights. The Mets don't either. I can understand naming rights for small markets, but in New York? Boston? Los Angeles? Weak.

How about the Mets showing a little class and dumping Citi, given the circumstances?

It'd take all of about five seconds for another company to swoop in and pick up those naming rights at the same price...especially in NYC.

THe Mets can die in a fire, that's for sure.

In this climate? Not bloody likely. The deal was swung for naming rights, what, back in late 2006?

The Giants and the Jets haven't sold the naming rights for their stadium yet, and they've been out there FOREVER>

maybe an upside of the current financial crisis will be the end of the ridiculous 'naming rights' for stadiums. Citibank's gonna pay $20 million a year for the naming rights. are they really expecting $20 million worth of people thinking, "i'd love to open a bank account, but i don't know the name of an banks--hey look, CitiField! i'll go with CitiBank!!!"

naming rights are nothing but corporate vanity projects.

p.s. the new Mets stadium should be Bob Murphy Park. that's what i'm gonna call it.

Then I want one of the following:

1) Use of the skybox tickets held for the Citi executives during Phillies/Mets games, since I'm paying for this mess.

2) The name of the stadium changed from 'Citi Field' to 'Field Name Redacted By The U.S. Department Of Treasury Field'

Holding out hope they don't do that with the Nationals...small market Baltimore has always resisted slapping a name on Oriole Park, as has Cincinnatti - the Rangers (between Dallas and Ft. Worth) did succumb to it, but two years ago severed ties with Ameriquest and now they are Rangers Ballpark - for somereason "Coors Field" (in Colorado), "Busch Stadium (St. Louis) and Turner Field (Atlanta) never bothered me. The one that bugs me the most is San Diego - "Petco" - and any financial institution - "Citizen's Bank" and "Chase Field" bug me - "CitiField" would be the worst.

Well, The Busch family owned the Cardinals up until about 1995. The new owners decided not to change the name of the building, not even the new place. They don't need to, considering how successful the Cards are money-wise.

Turner Field is just a vanity thing because of the previous owner, and good on Ted. However, he doesn't own the Braves anymore, so who knows how long that will last.

As for the Reds - both the old and new stadium have naming rights. The old place was called Cinergy Field, the new place is "Great American Ballpark" after an Insurance company.

I wonder if the English and Scottish feel the same way about the Phillies...

Are they selling haggis in the stands at citizens bank park yet?

LONDON - Royal Bank of Scotland PLC's shares soared 13 percent today on expectations that stockholders will vote in favor of a proposed 20 billion pound ($30 billion) investment from the government, which would shore up the beleaguered bank's balance sheet.
Shareholders are due to vote later today on the plan to issue 15 billion pounds of new shares underwritten by the government, and sell 5 billion pounds of preference shares directly to the government.

RBS is the owner of Citizens Bank, which has the second-largest bank-branch network in Philadelphia and its Pennsylvania suburbs, after Wachovia Corp.

I'm not a Mets fan and I didn't approve of ANY of Bush and Obama's socialist bailouts (which didn't work), but doesn't Citi have the right to advertise in a manner in which they see fit? It seems Citi Field will get a lot of advertising from the stadium, but I'm not an expert. Aren't they bound by contract as well?
As Ron stated a few weeks (or months?) ago, these businesses still have to do business. You can't force them to have offices in shitty neighborhoods just to save on rent. That would hurt their business. You can't force them to sell office furniture and have folding chairs instead.
The real problem is that liberal Bush and Obama stupidly handed out money without any limitations.

Yes. I remember when the first bailout was being discussed and Bush firmly said "THIS WILL FIX EVERYTHING IN A FEW MONTHS". And "liberal bush"? Are you serious? Is that what the right-wing talk show hosts are claiming now? That since Bush sucked, he must have been liberal?

Yes, liberal Bush. Was abortion happening? Yes. Was gay marriage happening? Yes.
Was Bush spending like crazy? Yes. He's a liberal. Just b/c he's religious doesn't mean he's a conservative. The sad thing is that Obama has to be sickeningly liberal in order to look liberal compared to Bush. We're sooo doomed.
I didn't vote for Bush. I don't listen to right-wing radio, but if it means anything I don't personally know any conservatives who liked Bush and approved of his bullshit. Religious people liked him and he didn't even stick up for their causes. He didn't federally fund stem cell research, but it was still happening on his watch.
Oh yeah, Bush also bought the global warmning myth hook line and sinker. Liberal!!!
