Is AARP a good thing?

Are there any negatives to being an AARP member? Do you end up getting more jumk mail or solicitations or added to mailing lists or whatever? I know you need to be over 50. It is for a relative..

Someone was telling me they get like 20% off lots of stuff, but I assume there is some catch somewhere.. Anyone know about it?

i think like %85 percent of the members of aarp die within the first 10 years of membership.
