when i was younger, i used to have three different recurring nightmares. i had at least one of the three of them (one more than the other two) every single night for years. and i had another one a few years ago, which lasted for at least 6 months or so. i have heard that nightmares recur when something is bothering you, and that they eventually stop when you've resolved whatever that thing is. i was wondering if you had any more about this. i'd really like to know what these things mean/meant. thanks

ARIENETTE - There are many different opinons about dreams, their origins and their meanings.
From personal experience, most people can attest that they dream about things they think about during the day.
But that's only a very small part of the total picture. Whether we recall doing so or not, everyone dreams every night. The mind needs dreams to function. Studies have shown that people who are not allowed to dream (they are awakened as soon as REMS start) begin to quickly hallucinate and experience all sorts of psychosis. These disappear when the person is once again allowed to dream.
Remember that Freud divided the mind into the conscious and unconscious. The conscious part is the stuff we know and actively think about. The unconscious stuff are thoughts and ideas that are below the surface, kept there because confronting the issue directly would be too difficult and or painful to the person.
Dreams are a mechanism of communication b/w the conscious and unconscious mind. They represent thoughts that are present in your unconscious that are trying to work their way to the conscious mind where they can be adressed.
Then there is the concept of symbolism. No doubt you're familiar with dreams about towers being equated with the penis. There is some symbolism to be found in most dreams.
Personally, I am of the opinion that for the most part, dreams are symbolic representation of what's going on in your life. They don't exactly parellel it, but outside observers are often able to show a remarkable correlation.
When seen in the context of an entire life situation, the meaning and significance of seemingly random or unrelated dreams can become self-evident. Usually, though, most people aren't able to do this themselves b/c they are too close to the situation to view it objectively.

Hey Arienette if you go to yahoo and play around with dream interpretation and meanings of dreams you can find some free websites that will let you look in a dream dictionary and see what things are "supposed" mean... i have had a reoccuring dream for my entire life... i am out in public and my teeth start to fall out and mouth bleeds until i have no teeth and it f-ing sucks i hate that dream......

the recurring nightmares that i have are definitely based on things that have gone on in my life that i havent been able to come to terms with yet

thanks... that all makes sense.
but what i am kind of wondering about is the difference between the usual, sort of one off dreams and the recurring ones. would it be correct to assume that a recurring dream just signifies an issue that is just more pressing and a more constant concern?

Yes, recurring dreams often represent a big issue or conflict that has yet to be resolved

I had a flashback dream last night. When I was a about 8 I was visiting a friend who lived pretty far away from me, though we were in the same town. I should add that I was relatively new in town and didn't know my way around.
We were playing outside and his sister was whining about something, and then his mother started yelling something like "I'm going to kill him!" in this raging lunatic voice. And I was so scared, I thought she was talking about me (to this day I'm not sure), and I got the hell out of there. I'm glad I found my way home.
I had totally forgotten about this. Looking back, that kid's mother was a real nutbar, but maybe she was sick. I know that she died of cancer a few years later.

I know I have dreams, but I rarely remember them. One that I know that Ive had a few times growing up was what I call an "all white" dream, where Im walking around and its white, like a cloud all around me and I cant tell where Im going or if Im going to run into anything or fall off a ledge. It was very scary.
How did you even find this old post anyway?

Wish I could help but I'm not sure about this topic. I went to a pseudo military college (SUNY Maritime College - got a 3rd mates license - the intent is go work on Merchant Ships but I decided I didnt want that). The recurring dream I have is that it is the day the ship is leaving school for the summer training cruise, I havent packed yet, I am missing parts of my uniform, and the ship is literally pulling out of port. I've probably had this once or twice a year since graduation (1988)
Not sure what triggers it, but I do believe something during the day predisposes me to that dream.

probably the worst dream i had is looking between a crowd of people in my swimming pool to see my eldest daughter lying at the bottom of the deep end and nobody noticed.
another dream i used to have often but not in a long while is waking up in the dream to realize there is some intruder in the house. i got the cold sweats when i wake up.

I rarely dream, but when I do it's in color and I can't remember it afterwards. A few brief images and even those are gone after a few minutes.

Since so little is known about the mind, one cannot get a definitive answer.
They can sure be fun, interesting, entertaining and scary as hell.
After a nightmare, I think about it right afterwards in that sort of twilight state- in terms of not wanting to have it again. What then happens is that if I do have it again, I wake up as it starts and it doesn't go on. Eventually they go away completely.
I have some very vivid ones at times and keep a pad by the bed to write them down. I've gotten a few good songs, poems and short stories that way.

Combine this...
<img src="http://www.zone-sf.com/images/buffy8.jpg">
with this...
<img src="http://www.newsmax.com/images/headlines/911WTC.jpg">
And that would be a pretty accurate representation of a fun recurring nightmare I have.

I used to have 3 recurring nightmares. One was that I was in a pyramid and it all started to collapse. Annd we would finally get out and ti would be my family room, but it was scary.
The other was that I go into a book store with my mom and dad and two older brothers. There were four rows of bookcases and a T-Rex. My mom grabbed me and took me to the right while my brothers went to the left. I didn't see my brothers after that. I would always wake up as I see them running to the door. It was really scary.
They said you'd help me
But as it turns out it was all a lie
And they're off someplace far away laughing at me...

Ari, I have had the same recurring nightmare as far back as I can remember as a child. I heard the same thing, that nightmares happen when something is bothering you. I also like to blame it on an overactive imigination. AFter I watch some movies, I tend to have nightmares. I also sleepwalk and talk in my sleep. I almost fell down the basement stairs like that when I was little.
