Worker dies at Long Island Wal-Mart after being trampled in Black Friday stampede (http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2008/11/28/2008-11-28_worker_dies_at_long_island_walmart_after.html)
"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," said Jimmy Overby, 43, a co-worker. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too...I literally had to fight people off my back."

I think we have about 3-5 more years of doing things this way before they start to do some type of numbering lotto system.

Defeats the purpose of these scumbag stores drawing hundreds of people to shop at 4am the day after a holiday when they only have 5-10 of the big items available at the super duper price. I assume most people think they have to buy SOMETHING since they woke up to go to a store at 4am, even if they didn't get what they really wanted.

Savages...

first of all, this family should sue the shit out of walmart and make billions upon billions...

there is no reason that there should be a stampede.... all of the major doorbusters where they only have a limited quantity should have a ticket attatched... first people in line get a ticket...
thats the way it should work and all of this would of been prevented

I can't believe that they still haven't figured out to double up on security at opening time and organize it more at any store.

I know a month ago Ikea had a crazy sale and from what I heard people were going wild the first day, so the second day they did the ticketing thing where people in line got a number for the items they were buying up front.

I'm of the belief that 90% of the people aren't there to even shop

They come to (a) say they were there and/or (b) watch all the "madness" they perceive will happen...thats where most of these crowds come from

Its the exact same principle of why traffic slows on the highway on BOTH sides even if the accident is completely in the other direction...so some jackoff can have an interesting story to tell at a bar while he's trying to pick up some skank

Then there would be pushing and shoving to get to the head of the line and the people who did get the tickets will be assaulted.

Before police shut down the store, eager shoppers streamed past emergency crews as they worked furiously to save the store clerk's life.

"They were working on him, but you could see he was dead, said Halcyon Alexander, 29. "People were still coming through."

Only a few stopped.

"They're savages," said shopper Kimberly Cribbs, 27. "It's sad. It's terrible."

Savages indeed. The store manager will probably lose his job and the lawyers will make millions (they're probably already contacting the families).

I really hope Wal-Mart has security cameras in the store and the parking lot so they can track the people responsible and their license plates. The only reason I hold Wal-Mart responsible is for the exact reason you stated. They ABSOLUTELY should've given out tickets for this "doorbuster" shit.

I'm from East Rockaway, so I'm next to Valley Stream. Other than the nightmarish traffic, I really like the South Shore. It's the best mix of urban and suburban, IMO. The Five Towns, Lynbrook, Rockville Centre, and East Rockaway are all the equivalent of an upper-middle class Queens neighborhood. When you start going futher east, it becomes more of the cookie-cutter suburbia you would find anywhere else in the country. Western Nassau, however, is the best of both worlds.

I live in Elmont, right on the VS border, have lived here my whole life. I also work in Valley Stream. It is definitely the Queens and City crowd at the mall that caused the chaos. If you ever see the traffic patterns near Green Acres on the weekend, all the traffic is coming from, and returning to, the city.
I go to Green Acres all the time, I have never had a problem. Sure, they have crime, but so does every other mall on the island. I think this tragedy was just a case of people being disgusting asshats, and that type of behavior seems to be universal, not tied to any one color or creed.

In civilized areas I agree with you. I was referring to this specific store where they ripped the doors off the hinges. I'm not sure these people would politely stand in line waiting for their ticket. If that was even the cause of the stampede.

There's another article (Newsday) linked on Drudge along with the Daily New article. I think that's the article where the police were quoted as saying there was a mob scene in the parking lot even before the store opened. Also, when the police tried to close the store, the people wouldn't leave.

The funny thing is, these aren't. Most of the people on the deal forums have derided these sales as being lousy this year. A friend of mine who works in retail is saying the hyped deals are on crap.

Someone has decided that this is typical behavior in the Northeast (http://voices.kansascity.com/node/2929).

The incident is appalling, but it fits the stereotype about East Coast people who don't care about others.

I encourage everyone who sees what this is really about to contact Mr. Abouhalkah about his views on the Northeast. More importantly, however, it demonstrates the folly in saying "typical Long Islanders." Because while you're looking down on them, a good ole boy columnist in the Midwest looks down on all of us who happen to live along the Atlantic, while the world sees this as American consumerism run rampant. The fact is, this could've happened anywhere on the planet and we should feel this shame as human beings rather than try to distance ourselves from "those" people.

Herd mentality is a dangerous situation. I'm in Philly for the holiday and they just showed on the news two stores opening at 4am. One store opened up and people walked in civilized, in line, with no pushing, running or yelling. The other, well, it was exactly all that I just described. Animals. I know I wouldn't do it, and I've been in those situations when I avoided it... but I've seen the way people change. The greed, the need to be first... I don't even know what it is. Perhaps some social psychologist has a term for it. I just see assholes.

Last year around this time I was watching the premiere for the new season of 24 on the big screen outside in Times Square. There were a lot of people there, but you could walk around with no more problems than a usual tourist-crowd day. Then a FOX intern walked up with a box and placed it right in front of me. In the box was 24 hats they were giving away. As I was right there, I got one but 5 seconds later the intern had to start shouting for people to keep back and about 20 seconds later the police had to push people back. I was knocked over and had to throw a few elbows just to get up. All for a cheap, free hat. I saw the same mob mentality numbers times on the day of the blackout. It's hard to compare what means will cause people to do that, whether it be free food to feed a baby or a good deal on a TV, but it shows that society is a very thin, very fine line, and make no mistake, we're just one disaster away from killing our fellow brothers if it will make our life a little bit easier. Give thanks.

I'm with you, but I'll give her the benefit of the doubt that she expected some kind of orderly system like the ticket system that Best Buy uses. It's funny, the only thing that tempted me to even contemplate doing a doorbuster was a $9.99 blu-ray I wanted at Best Buy, and this afternoon, Target has put that same blu-ray up for sale, but for the whole season. Ridiculous.

Someone has decided that this is typical behavior in the Northeast (http://voices.kansascity.com/node/2929).

It must have worked, as he edited his article.

The racism in this thread is subtle at best, and mainly done for humor value. The fact of the matter is, this isn't about "me first" attitude, this is about savage, low-class, low-income people who wanted to save a couple of hundred bucks on last year's TV.

Race doesn't have a LOT to do with it, but it's a deciding factor.

I don't know anything about the neighborhood this Wal Mart is in, but this kind of thing happens at Wal Marts and other retailers in all kinds of neighborhoods. I blame both the retailers and the local news stations for this kind of crap. They go out of their way to create the mad rush at the opening of the doors, and then it gets played on the 6 o'clock news.

There are so many things the stores can do to prevent it, but they want the spectacle. I worked at Wal Mart during Christmas 2000. It's a 24 hour place, and the manager was wise enough to prevent this crap. People were allowed in the store whenever they wanted. The special sale items were roped off, and people would stand in line by the item they were most interested in. When 6AM hit, they started selling the stuff. There were still scuffles over some stuff as it ran out, but it was isolated pockets of the store.

My brother works in retail, I took part in a massive black friday deal last year (Best Buy, Target, Staples) and Liz was out this morning.

It's a product of three things:

1) Environment

2) Population

3) Preparedness

What happened here was, the Wal-Mart did not have proper security for what happened. You need crowd control, especially if you're dealing with a large group of people that is cold, tired, and greedy.

What's going to happen is, the manager of the store is fired, the district manager is going to be fired, the guy who talked to the press is going to be fired, and the family of the man who died is going to be very well paid.

I firmly believe it is all because of the "me first" attitude. In their twisted mind sets, they justify barbaric behavior as payment for "having to wait in line". I have seen it in all races, so try not to judge people. It is the way humans are evolving. We lose our cool if we have to wait because we have become conditioned to instant satisfaction and fixes.

There is a regional aspect to this death too. This would not happen in most of America and would definitely not happen anywhere in Canada. New Yorkers, people from northern New Jersey, and most of Long Island are proud of being assholes and this 'fuck you' attitude has consequences. I see it at all levels of society here and all races. I know investment bankers who brag about how they cheat and fuck over people. I know Brooklyn mothers that will scream at the top of their lungs at a private school administrators to get their precious little darlings into a prestigious school. I live on Dekalb and there is no better example of asshole behavior than Brooklyn drivers. The amount of honking, nearly running over pedestrians, and generally being pricks in traffic is ridiculous. I could go on and on with examples of how shameless people here about being angry, petty, vile human beings. I know I am generalizing but there is definitely something in the culture here that makes people think it is acceptable and strong to treat other people like shit. Hey, thats not true! I do not know anyone who would act this way and be so unfeeling about someone who got hurt. I have heard about this kind of thing before, and almost always it is outside the NY area, but I do not think it has so much to do with what area it is as much as changing sensibilities of all people who have no patience and get angry slow fulfillment. In todays world, we are becoming so used to having instant pleasure and instant access to whatever we want that we become enraged when things take longer to get done than we expect. Think about how easy it is now to get information, to see a movie or speak to someone instantly from anywhere we are. I know I am effected by it too, I get pissed when someone gets ahead of me too, but I am learning to realize that this causes me anxiety and it is meaningless in the scheme of things. I did the Black Friday overnight thing at Best Buy 3 years ago with my sister... they went down the line about 1 hour before the store opened and handed out tickets. When they opened the store they announced that you had to have the ticket to get the item and it was pretty orderly. Don't know why Walmart didn't do that.

Yeah, but when I went and did this, everyone was pleasant on line, people who had family members running out to get them coffee got coffee for the people in line next to them, if someone tried to sneak in and cut everyone banded together and called them out on it, and that was in NY.

It's a straw man argument. I can't argue that people didn't die in a store in California, but when you read the story and see that it is the result of people carrying guns and probably the result of "prior" i.e. gang issues it has no relevance in this discussion. There was no stampede the people involved weren't innocents...People on this board are thrilled to call non-new yorkers hayseeds, but when the shit hits there own back door the excuses start flying.

The finger pointing has evolved from "Long Islanders" to "blacks" to Americans. This is an everywhere problem. This country just has shinier stuff to stampede over. There isn't a corner of the globe that can say "those" people did this, no matter who they direct it at.

i think it's silly for anyone here to be calling this a homicide. no one's ever been caught up in swelling crowds where you have no control over where you get pushed? so, the who fans in cincy in 1979 were animals who were greedy and should have stopped to prevent injury to their fellows? you're just being unrealistic. yes, better (any?) crowd management techniques need to be used, but that's on the back of the business, not the customers.

Manslaughter - The unlawful killing of a human being without malice or premeditation, either express or implied; distinguished from murder, which requires malicious intent. (http://www.lectlaw.com/def2/m013.htm)

The cases of manslaughter may be classed as follows those which take place in consequence of: 1. Provocation. 2. Mutual combat. 3. Resistance to public officers, etc. 4. Killing in the prosecution of an unlawful or wanton act. 5. Killing in the prosecution of a lawful act, improperly performed, or performed without lawful authority.

Precisely. These human stampedes can and have happened in Japan, which is the most formal and polite culture on the planet.

i almost died at the tibetan freedom concert on randalls island during the beastie's set. i got knocked to the ground & someone was standing on my head. by the time i crawled out of it i had lost my shoes & my glasses, i was covered in dirt from head to toe bleeding from my knees & i had bruised my ribs. & that was supposed to be a happy peaceful place.

Youre also 5ft tall. Someone your height shouldnt be in a mosh pit of that size at an outdoor show.
I was at that too. I was probably standing on you to get a better view.

Black Friday is the worst. Ever since I was a kid, with parents punching each other over Cabbage Patch Kids, it's been engineered to bring out the worst in shoppers.

1. 5am store openings.

2. "Black Friday Only" specials.

3. Stores and toy companies not having enough inventory and supply to artificially raise prices on "hot items" due to too much demand that they created by not making enough items.

4. Stupid people who year after year validate this insanity by showing up.

It was a matter of time-the trampling and the Toys R Us shooting is just the beginning. It will only continue to degrade into total consumer depravity and cold, corporate capitalism.

and you think someone in the crowd will or could be prosecuted for this?

Thanks for making my point. Even the most reserved cultures are capable of humiliatingly tragic behavior.

The NCPD is already looking to identify and prosecute people based on the photos and surveillance tape (http://www.wnyc.org/news/articles/116974). Unless they paid for that $800 HDTV in cash, they should expect a talking to. That should narrow down more than a few people. Oh, and the tape won't be *quite* as blurry when they are strolling OUT of the store with purchase in hand as opposed to running in.

Not everyone, but the biggest bargains are the ones that people would be first in line for, and the people who were first in line were almost definitely there for a TV or other purchase of >$100. Based on a purchase that size, one can surmise that the purchase was made with a credit card. Now that they have a name, address, and phone #, they can at least talk to these guys and see if they can identify anyone from the pictures or maybe they match a photo themselves. Anyone who waited since Thanksgiving evening was there for 4 or 5 things whose price was cut in half, and there was maybe 20 of each in the store. If they go through the purchases, they can find some of these fuckers or get leads to others.

Unless they have crystal clear surveillance and know exactly when a deathblow came, getting anyone for more than assault and battery is going to be EXTREMELY hard.

I blame WalMart - I went to Best Buy last year which was very orderly but I got on too late to get what I wanted. There was a Walmart nearby and I went over there. WalMart had no employees outside - no rope or designated line area, nothing. By the time the doors opened the line swelled at the front because no one was there to control it. There was a stampede for the door that was similar to the one where the guy died. If they had spent a few bucks to set up like Best Buy there would not have been a problem.
