If Santa Claus can conquer the Martians, he can conquer the Jews.

Regarding the Colbert Toby Keith video -

Was that done intentionally to make Toby look uncomfortable? It's obvious he's reading off a teleprompter or something, but knowing how Colbert's show works, maybe that was part of the gag.

It's just that I've never seen that awful of a performance from Toby, and I'm just wondering if that was the setup.

From watching the special, most of the song performances were pre-recorded, and then video was shot, with the people lip syncing, similar to normal music videos.

My guess is they only had him for a day or so, so they had him record a studio version of the track (which Toby is now pushing on iTunes), and then just gave him cue-cards and said, 'act like you're playing the song.'

The Willie Nelson song in the special is the same way. So is the Feist one, and Colbert's opening song.

The only ones that might have been done live on tape, is the Colbert/Stewart duet, and the John Legend song, but I'd have to go back and watch to make sure.
