Ron commented today that the front page of RonFez.net (featuring RobotArtist's brilliant "Fez The Incredible Liar" comic cover) shows how the fans have turned on Fez. He said they've lost a lot of respect for him when he didn't come clean about seeing a movie over the summer, trying to get out of paying Dave the money he owed him on the bet.

It's something I've noticed for a while, and I think it started way before the lie. When Fez first began showing signs of depression after his heart attack the callers were ruthless, asking to get in the prize closet when he cried. Soon the interns and producers on the show joined in the mocking and the fans just followed suit.

No one would have dared taunt the "old Fez" for fear that he'd tear them a new asshole, especially interns. He was also beloved, and the thought of ripping on Fez was as insane as thinking of busting Ron's balls.

What troubles me is that now a large majority of fans not only see Fez as a liar, but also a coward. The fact that he can't share his 'secret' with his family really puts him in an even lower position in most peoples eyes.

I think there's only one way out of this for my buddy Fez - he should call his parents live on the air and share his secret with them, as well as every listener in the Sirius/XM nation.

A move that ballsy would command respect, and probably empower Fez a great deal.

Of course it's totally Fez's decision as to what he chooses to share about his private life and with whom, and I'll always love and respect him. I just get a little pissed off at people who don't show him the reverence and admiration he deserves.

Fez should go to anyones house who calls for the prize closet when fez cries and live on the air beat their fucking ass on their very own doorstep!!!

its disgusting the way fez is treated now. Maybe a little Nature Boy visit too would help him.

Then I put on an old wrestling tape.

Soon his throbbing...

Wait a minute, this is secret.

I don't know if there even was one incident that turned people against Fez as it is the way he's portrayed on a day to day basis. In the old days if the staff screwed up both Ron and Fez would blast them. These days it's Ron getting mad and Fez apologizing that he can't get the staff under control.

Fez is still on the show?

I couldn't imagine being 64 and still living in fear of my mothers judgement.

The rare occasion ron and fez do interact are great, but its funny to hear the new listeners who want dave back.

There are probably thousands of listeners who have no clue why its the ron and fez show.

12-01-2008, 02:48 PM
To be fair, most of today's listeners have only heard the current version of Fez and don't know anything else. They only know the crying, insecure, depressed, rarely-pays-off-a-bet Fez

Think about it - Fez has essentially been "New Fez" since they started on XM and there are A LOT of people that listen now that didn't get to hear Ron & Fez during WNEW or WJFK. I would say the majority of current listeners have had their first exposure to the show since it came to satellite. You are referring to a time that only exists in Best Of's or in the File Library.

Essentially, you are asking new fans to give Fez respect and admiration that he may not have earned in their eyes since he has only been seen as the punching-bag sidekick to Ron Bennington.

First off, I love Fez as much as anyone. But if you don't think that Ron had something to do with this apparent 'lack of respect' from the listeners then you don't know what you are talking about. He brought up sending listeners to the BAPC when he cried in the first place.

It's alllll a work and they know better than me so whatever dynamic they have, I will be a fan of.

You, sir, are a favorite of mine. I agree 100% with what you've just posted. That's why I think it's important for Fez to assert himself and gain this respect with the new fans, and also regain some self-respect.

No one fucked with either one of them.

Who can forget Ron threatening to chase Cameron Gray down the street with the phone.

I can't wait for the day that Old Fezzie is back, and the team is a re-united front once again.

And don't take this to be a knock on Ronnie, in any way. He's the best friend and partner that anyone could ever wish for, and he's been remarkably patient.

Maybe they need a good radio war again. I hear Eddie Trunk will be back on the air soon...

I agree with the posters that Ron has been pretty hostile to Fez, but I don't know what else Ron can do. You can't sit there and coddle a grown man on the air constantly. Ron is just taking the show wherever he thinks it works. When Fez was on his game he was a great match for Ron.

I remember listening to a bit on the air where they argued over what constituted a fast food restaurant for like 45 minutes of back and forth between the two of them, and callers thrown in the mix. I couldn't count how many times Fez had a point and Ron would actually concede that he had a good point. It wasn't Fez trying half-heartedly to make a point followed by Ron being completely dismissive and condescending to him. I don't even remember the last time that has happened on the XM show. Now Fez seems scared to voice his opinion because he is scared Ron will tear him down. Come on Fez, you don't see Dave scared to voice his opinions and they are completely ridiculous half of the time.

I don't know what happened between WJFK and XM, but Fez sounds like a beaten man a lot of the time. What I don't understand is how come when people are in studio he's back to his old self. Maybe if they moved back to nights where more people could show up live we could have Old Fezzy back.

Please don't take this as a knock to Fez. I love the guy, and I still love the show, whatever incarnation it takes. I just want Fez to reclaim his crown. I recommend Fez start a vigorous workout of picking up cart racks and other daring feats of strength to reclaim the respect he so rightfully deserves. I want him to flair chop the shit out of ESD and Earl to show them that no POS producer can try to take his spot.

Nights for Ron and Fez!

I agree. To me that is the best pay off Ive ever heard on R&F.

I think people dont respect Fez because he doesnt respect himself. It sounds lame but thats it. He disappears, he effectively lets Dave take second mic and he doesnt shoot back.

What we need is the young aggressive Fez. You have to love yourself before others can love you.

Nights for Ron and Fez!

I do agree that a return to evenings might help things out, as well as a return from some of the old regulars, like Billy Staples and Rory. But in the end, it has to be Fez deciding that enough is enough and either stepping up or getting the help he needs to step up.

Of course, this will take time and probably be gradual. Despite many people's fantasies, it's unlikely that Fez is going to just charge into the studio one day and be "old Fez" again. Plus, wouldn't it be better for him to be "evolved Fez" at full strength? Although I would love the day where Fez feels at full strength again and starts the show by Flair-chopping both Dave and Earl and then tears them both a huge new asshole for how the show has been produced over the last couple of years.

I happen to agree with a lot of this. I have only listened to the show since they have been on XM, but when I hear the replays of the WNEW and WJFK days, Ron is a completely different person too. I don't know whose change affected who most or first, or whatever, but the Ron today would not hang with the Ron from those days.

Maybe Ron's is a result of Fez's changes, or vice versa, or maybe they're unrelated, but both have changed.

When did Ron get sober?

You may say he's the same person he's always been - and I know it's sacrilege to say anything about Ron, but the old Ron was much more patient, less cynical, and went with things a lot differently than he does today. Even a couple of years ago, he would let a comedy pyramid go on with mediocre call after mediocre call, 'laughing' at the bad calls - he wouldn't do that today.

I'm not saying one is better than the other, but people change over a period of years.

I am convinced Fez is afraid to put himself out there because he doesn't feel he has a support system, and doesn't think his partner will have his back.

A lot of Fez's current unstable state is a bit. The "secret" is a bit because it's obvious he is gay and all of the Prop 8 talk, gay is the worst thing you can call a man, the gay Santa secret song, etc. seems to be part of the joke. Yesterday, however, Ron seemed genuinely annoyed that Fez only gets interested in the show when he talks about his problems. Is Ron's seeming to be annoyed, uncomfortable, and angry at how pathetic Fez is on the air part of the joke too?

Agreed. Fez likely doesn't feel like he has a support system. That said, wouldn't anyone be hesitant to put themselves out there either revealing something or just trying to re-ignite the vigor they once had.

The recent barrage of callers who have taken the initiative to simply insult Fez is terrible. This didn't exist pre-xm. So, maybe we should take it upon ourselves to let him know how much we support him in this. Start with threads supporting him. When appropriate, call in to defend him or simply support him when he is getting abused by those around him.

Fez is amazing! He has taken on the role of the guy who 'wants to be attacked' recently but we all know that this isn't what he really!

Or, we could all just get a chance to kick ESD in the balls. That might cheer Fez up!

Good idea. The only time I have heard Fez really engaged in the show besides when he talks about his problems is when ESD is getting tortured or humiliated. He was giddy when Dave was getting branded. Maybe Fez's secret is he is a huge S&M guy and is known as the Dungeon Master at his favorite Christopher Street bar.

Maybe Fez should re-instate the policy of NO DAVE'S ALLOWED. I do like Dave and think he can add a tremendous amount to the show but recently he has had to fill the void areas where Fez is not stepping up. When Fez wouldn't let him on air as much, Fez was forced to add more to the show and did sound great!

If you read between the lines, you would know that Fez's secret is that he's been seeing a shrink to help him get over his womanizing ways. He should be allowed to keep his secret to himself.

Holy shit it would be hilarious if they played up that angle.

I agree with GVAC though. The Fez of old was quick to get mean. Mean in a fun way, but still mean. He can still do it when he's in the right mind set, so it's not like he lost the skill.

I also agree that the sooner he embraces his "secret" and just says "Fuck it. This is who I am and if you don't like it, go fuck yourself," the sooner he'll be able to get back into the groove. Just acknowledging it to himself has made him a lot better. I think he's been getting better ever since he started spending weekends with whoever that was and I hope he's able to learn to embrace who he is some time before he croaks. It's not like you get a second chance.

Fez is the one who asks for Dave to be in there, and if you listen closely you can hear the times of the show when they're waiting for Fez to jump in and Dave just comes flying in from left field with a horrible opinion.

Not to bash Dave as I have done in the past but in the old days Ron was the only one there that would "insult" or make fun of Fez. It was accepted as part of the team. Now, Dave who we know likes Fez does feel empowered to insult Fez pretty regularly about his weight his habits etc. If the producers feel free to turn on Fez so will the callers. I think this adds to Fez s lack of self confidence lately. I know I have a reputation as anti Dave but this does not come from that feeling. Fez is better on the show when Dave is NOT there. I think its a better show when Fez is a big part than when he is the punching bag. (Edit) I'm not saying the show is better without Dave. I'm saying Fez is better without Dave there. I think this was the suggestion that Mooch instituted if I look back.

It used to be "Ron and Fez" against the rest of the world, including the staff.

(cue the Van Halen music...)

"You're not the program director here. You've never been one."

(paraphrasing)... "You call here again during the show and I'll chase you down the street with this phone"

That was not part of "the reef," "EddieTrunkEddieTrunk" or WNEW days - that was the last couple month or so on WJFK rigtht before the move to XM, and Ron never yelled at Cameron Gray so much as he yelled at Giant Brian, who was on the phone with Cam. It all came out because Ron was having a discussion about music with Bobo, that was getting pretty in-depth, and Fez didn't feel like chiming in.

Ron was furious (although he has been more so many more times on XM in the last 3 years), and during the next break (and maybe even to the end of the show) they talked wrestling, getting more and more obtuse ast the night went on - evidently this was something managment had told them never to do.

During this particular era, Ron did have a nick name for Cameron ("The Runaway Bride"), which was the secret phrase given out every night on the show for at least a month. In the end, Cam remained friends and a supporter to R&F (he was the Hideout's biggest advocate there, outside of R&F), but the frustration was he was powerless.

Nice recap, but we were talking about two different things.

One, how Ronnie used to defend his best buddy, and gave probably THE best example...

...and Two, that it used to always be "Us against Them", and how a "Radio War" (even a fabricated one like against Eddie) could help re-build their united front.

I'm aware it was two different times. But thanks for pointing it out.

Ron's never been before that furious on XM - not even close. And I'd never heard Ron melt down like that at WNEW either.

That was a side of Ron we rarely see, and I think it just shows how unhappy they were at WJFK.

Fez seems like Fez to me. Just a little more wiser and a tad bit sexier.
His ability to become the "dirtiest player in the book" when it comes to paying off bets, is absolute classic. Fez is the soul of the Ron and Fez show. The haters are sheep.

I don't get why everyone is saying that Fez needs to snap out of it, or he needs to step up to the plate. Why can't we as listeners just accept the fact that he's going through a hard time and this is who he is at this time. Granted he's been having a hard time for a while but we should be supportive of that instead of all this calling and bashing. It's just rude. If you are that bothered by the change in Fez and you think the show is worse because of it then don't listen to the show.

Ok...maybe I was thrown by the whole "REEF" comment, because I alwaysnever really fond of that, but that's just me...

And personally, I still see where Ron defends Fez, but they have always taken opposite sides on issues for the purpose of moving the show along so I see this as an extension of that. I've heard Ron give better examples, quite honestly, on XM. Ron lashed into ESD for shoving Fez's face in the food - many more examples. First and formost it's a comedy show, and they are both comedians and professionals and know what they are doing.

And the fake radio war - wasn't that really mocking the fact that Don and Mike were openly saying Howard Stern's name, when D&M were also on WNEW and told not to? I don't quite get that as an example, since it was done as a parody.

Ron basically said as much - it was a frustrating time, and Ron got ticked off (a "melt down" is Fez and Mikey D.) - but if you think that's the only time they've been frustrated to the point where it comes out over the air since then, then you are wrong. Those moments aren't saved in the file library or pointed out because there's no sense in it because that's not what the show is about. The Cameron Gray call fits the accepted narrative of their unhappiness at WJFK, and with retrospect some sort of meaning can be put to it. And because it is so rare, it gets noticed. The stuff since then were equally "letting off steam," but it's happened.

What's worse than the people calling and ripping Fez are the people who call in to point out Fez jokes that were funny and people didn't laugh out loud about. That is so fucking annoying and condescending to Fez that it does more harm than good.

I never said that - clearly Ron gets angry from time to time. Usually it's with the staff, and done with some sense of love. But, this thing with Cameron came from a difference place. I'll stand by my statement that Ron's never come anywhere close to being that angry on the air in the last 7 years. And I've listened to just about every show they've done in that time period.

Everyone keeps saying that the old Fez was great because he was so mean to everyone, albeit in a funny way. Kind of cool bully picking on the nerdy kid kind of thing - but, you can't be the cool bully on your own. You can't be the cool bully all by yourself.

Fez doesn't feel that he has the respect of the other cool bully - Ron. If his partner doesn't take his side, he won't take a stand. If Fez isn't sure that Ron will take his side against Dave (and I love Dave), he won't thrash Dave. And that is true for callers, listeners, staff, etc. He isn't confident that he'll get support in his game.
