What do you do to cheer up someone you know is down about something? Besides just being there for them and whatnot, is there anything else you can do to make them feel better?

is it a guy or girl that's depressed?

Bring them their favorite food. Or treat them to their favorite restaurant. Surprise them with an ice cream sundae (or if they're a guy, ice cream girl). Find a magazine or two on a subject they're interested in. Take them to a movie they've been wanting to see. Go for a drive and blast the radio. If it's a guy, spring for a lap dance. If it's a girl, pop for some flowers. Anything that'll take their mind off their troubles. Maybe give them a "things-will-get-better-real-soon" or a similar type of friendship card.

It's hard to give suggestions that aren't gender specific, especially without knowing the root of this depression, i.e. a romance gone bad, holiday blues, upset that they've moved Dark Angel to Fridays, but a general rule of thumb is to just be there for them.

Listen when they wanna talk, talk if they're willing to listen. And accept the fact that sometimes people simply need to work through thing on their own.

Feeling down isn't always a bad thing. After all, absent the occasional sadness, how would we ever know what happiness was?

Good luck to you and your friend!

don't take them to a familar place because it may remind them of what's got them down.

take this person to some place new and entertaining.

just listen to whhat the have to say and let them vent out there issues. they'll usually feel better knowing that there was someone there to listen and be there for them.
