hey man, keep your chin up,as someone who gets laid off every year i say make the best of it.i cut back on the little things, and try to live on 60% of what i make year round.look for cheaper ph plans now, take less cable options, check out different insurance sites, remember it doesnt affect the quality of life.this could be a great time for you if ya look at the positivity

There are so many people on this board who have gotten laid off we could probably start our own business.

 This is the pits bro, It must really be a shitty feeling ..Although?!? :unsure:It might be the start of something positive..

 I'm not sure how old you are or wether or not you support a family but this may be the time to either get caught up with some schooling while you tred water with some type of part time job...Another way to handle it might be just to be patient and start aligning yourself with something you really want to do, either choices will put you in a good position....

:annoyed: I hate hearing when anyone loses their job, it sickens me to imagine myself in that position, that's why I chose to stay out of the private sector and went the civil service route. The pay has lagged for years but there's (especially now a days) something to be said for job security..

Maybe you should take your severance check to the nearest casino and put the whole thing on 21 Black..:smoke:If you hit on the bet you'll enjoy the last laugh, if you lose the bet, I can get you into a all men's homeless shelter on W145 st in Harlem..:help:
I'll be praying for you kiddo, I hope the god's of gainful employment (the ones who haven't been "let go") are on their job and scouring the want ads for you..
You're a good man and good things happen to good men..

EDIT: I can also get you condoms for the men's shelter..

Everyone thank you for the kind words i really appreciate it.

I was basically laid off as the last one hired first one fired kind of deal. No complaints about my work strictly the economy and when you worked in the housing type industry well you know whats going to happen

The good thing is i was never happy at this job, it was basically a job i had to take rather then a job i wanted to take after i was laid off at Rolls Royce. It was not a pleasent place to work at, nobody talked i mean can you imagine being in a room with 9 other people and not one of them talks all day long? Then they started cracking down on any internet usage and i mean any even if it was to check the news or the stock market or the weather so they didnt really treat us as professionals.

When i was let go i got a one month salary tax free severance, and all of my unpaid vacation days as well as i got laid off the day before payday so all in all it wasnt to bad. I am off to visity my brother in North Carolina for a few weeks before heading back to maryland for good. Which is great as i havent seen my friends or family in basicallly the last 2.5 years since i moved out to indiana. So then i will collect unemployment while searching for a job in maryland, and because of ohio's horrible economy i am also eligible for the extra 13 week extension to the benefits so i get something like 32 weeks of unemployment but hopefully i can find something before then

Im coming to realize that the life of an engineer is one where you travel a good deal and who knows i may end up in new york or texas or new mexico or even alaska.

I would be very very careful with this. MLM pyramid scheme companies and other direct sales places prey on newly updated resumes on Monster and Career Builder.

If the company mentions working with DARE, Verizon, AT&T, and is majorly name dropping how great their company is and how they work with other big companies, STAY AWAY. These are MLM places.

BTW - the best tip I can give you to see if your company is legit is to google the company name and add "ripoff" or "rip off".

If a hit comes back on RipoffReport and mentions MLM, it's not legit.

This may be a bit premature but I went in to work tonight and found that I had been taken off of the schedule for the entire week. As of last Friday, I was scheduled for three 12 hour shifts and one 4 hour shift. It's not uncommon for the schedule to get changed but it is uncommon for someone to be completely removed from it. I am on next week's schedule but I have a bad feeling. There was also a memo posted about voluntary lay-offs. Circuit City was one of our regular accounts and on top of that we recently lost another major customer.

The best part is that I recently took on a car payment (after driving second hand junk for my entire driving career) thinking I was going to be settled here in Nashville for a while and under the impression that my job was pretty secure. At least I don't have babies, I guess. It could certainly be worse.

My solution: I picked up a 12 pack on the way home and I am not wearing pants. I'll hit the job search in the morning. Fuck a 12 hour shift anyway.

I have Thursday, Friday, and Monday-Wednesday off next week. Not my choice, and not paid. It's a company wide shutdown to save money.

And if my job is not cut entirely, the chances are good that I will be reduced to basically being part time, or that I'll be temporarily laid off. And, on top of that, I might get a salary reduction even if I escape otherwise unscathed. Which I don't think I will.

Scary times buddays.

So its been a little over 3 months since i was laid off and things have been pretty shitty. Unemployment pays $365/week which is less then half of what i would make in a week but i have done my best to get buy. Getting my student loans in forebearance, working with my credit cards, eating a lot of food that i had luckily stockedup on when the price of food was going up last spring/summer when gas prices were through the roof, just making things work buying no extras, making iced tea. One of the worst things is no health insurance so I have been off of my bi-polar meds, and have run out of ambien and fall asleep at 4 in the morning and get maybe 4 hours of sleep a night. Finally i had to break down and get percocets refilled to a tune of $88. I borrowed $500 from a relative and have blown through that for a variety of bills/rent. All the while knowing that at the end of this month if i had no job i was going to move in with my brother in North Carolina where i can live for free and help take care of my nephew.

I have had a few job interviews, one i didnt get because i didnt have the background they were looking for no matter how much i tried to bluff my way through it. the other they hired a woman even though i was more qualified but i could understand it would have been working in a group that had 1 guy and 13 women and i would have been guy #2 so i can see that choice.

Well i sit here in Ft. Worth in a hotel room and have an interview with Lockheed Martin tomorrow. They paid for my flight, my rental car and my hotel room just for a hour long interview. This is to go and do flight test on the JSF which is the dream project for me, i have wanted to work flight test on this since 2002. I worked as a project engineer for Rolls Royce on the program so that will help and good references including a Lockheed employee that knows me from my time at RR. I have a cousin who is a Sr. VP in the legal department of Lockheed. And have flight test experience and would be able to move back to maryland. I think the fact they paid $500 to cover my trip here, and the lady at the car rental place said that they havent had any lockheed people in, in a while so i think things look really good for me for this job.

I have never asked this but i would really appreciate it if everyone would think good thoughts for me or say a prayer or whatever because this really is my last chance for something, and its the first job i have wanted to do in 3.5 years.

Thanks for reading and all good thoughts everyone you guys are great

Welcome to reality. We own a house, with 3 tenants who are laid off. I have no job, and the husband was laid off from the county about 3 months ago.

Almost 3 weeks after interviewing i just got the call tonight, and they arent hiring me thats it i give up the dishes are done im now without any prospects

That sucks, but the silver lining is that they called to tell you. That's generally a good sign that you were seriously considered and that they want to maintain some sort of relationship. If you haven't already, I suggest creating a linkedin account and connecting with everyone you dealt with in the interview process.

Sorry to hear that. Try sending your resume to CACI, BAH, SAIC: see what happens there.
