Vaporizer or Humidifier?

Every winter I get incredibly dry skin and sinuses from having the heat on in the house. I decided to take a trip to my local pharmacy to buy a vaporizer. Or a humidifier. I wasn't sure which one I needed or what the difference was.

There was a huge variety - cool mist vaporizers, hot steam vaporizers, cool mist humidifiers, and hot steam humidifiers. I was confused, so I asked the pharmacist. She told me that on the back of the box of one of them it had a chart that would best tell you which was the best choice for you.

On this chart a myriad of problems and symptoms were listed - runny nose, dry skin, stuffed head, chest congestion, etc. with a check next to each one that supposedly aided in the relief of said problem.

I was so fucking confused I walked out.

Basically, I want something to keep my skin and nasal passages from turning into sandpaper.

Any recommendations?

I bought a Vics Humidifier at CVS a few years ago and it still works great. No more dry mouth and skin when I wake up. But I'm not sure about the sinuses, since I don't have that problem.

If you get either you need to be sure to keep the liquid basin clean. If water sits there when its not being used it is a breeding ground for bugs. So clean it out frequentely. I would favor the humidifier

I run a humidifier during the winter for the heat and my wife fires up the vicks vaporizer when I've got a cold. Love the vicks ! Vaporizer is heat based humidifiers now are cool aid based.

my nose gets really dry in the winter so i started using a saline nasal spray like ocean. it makes a big difference. this humidifier/ vaporizer issue is very interesting to me. i have really bad sinuses too, but i can't sleep if it's too hot. i'm sleeping with the window open now & the heat off. do humidifiers make it hotter in the bedroom?

here's a good slate article (http://www.slate.com/id/2183196/) giving a rundown of a few different humidifiers. it's an old article, but it can still guide you in the right direction.

we have a few cheap animal-shaped ultrasonics from target. they are super quiet and put out cool mist at a pretty decent clip. the only drawback is they are small-ish so i have to refill they every 1-2 days.

I LOVE these things. I have 3 of them in the house--2 cows and an elephant.
Running them, using a neti-pot and saline spray keeps my nose moist and skin soft. I run one in my daughter's room constantly and she's only had two minor colds in her 2 years of living.

This thread actually inspired me to go out and buy a Vicks 1.0 Gallon Coolmist Humidifier (http://www.amazon.com/Vicks-Gallon-Cool-Mist-Humidifier/dp/B0000TN7MO). I have been using it the past 5 days, and I gotta tell ya............it's been working great.

I got a cool mister for the boy. He's very supple.

He's sick though so we've been using the warm one past few nights. Still surprisingly supple.

I can't imagine you'd go wrong with either. Just use the warm one when you're cranky, sutffy and wake at midnight with poopiepants.

Wow. I used my vaporizer for the first time last night and I woke up with healthy, moist sinuses even though I had the heat cranked last night.

This is amazing.

The vaporizer and the neti pot now rank as the two greatest purchases I ever made.
