Gulf Oil CEO Joe Petrowski said on Wednesday that the price of oil could sink to $20 per barrel, and there is a chance gasoline prices could drop as low as $1 per gallon by early next year.

I am loving this ever dropping rate for gas, it was way out of control for a while there.

It will never happen. Not as long as OPEC has a say in the matter.

A few months ago it was estimated that the price of gas would be ove $5 a gallon at this time; so I don't what to believe when I hear this crap.

in a month or so, they will pull back on production and the price will go back up. meanwhile as the price for gas does go down, everything else goes up.

Good...fuck them Oil bastards....they screwed us for the 2 and half years. I like the fact that even with OPEC cutting production the price is still dropping. As long as the american people, fly less, drive less the price of gas will stay down. OPEC has been cutting productions and it is still going down. OPEC meets again Dec. 13th.
Keep it up people.....

Do we really have to go over Carnies and Rubes 101?
It may drop a bit further this Winter.
It'll be 80-100 dollars a barrel again by mid Summer '09.
The lower prices is partially because of the economic squeeze, and partially a reaction to a coming administration that wants to spend money on alternative energy.
If lowering gas prices can derail that, or delay their plan, then it's well worth it to OPEC.

Two politicians really screwed here, of quite different political persuasions: Hugo Chavez and Sarah Palin.
Chavez, because his whole "socialist revolution" in Venezuela depends on massive government social spending that he probably can't afford if gas is $20/barrel.
Palin, because she's got to find a way to get the dumbasses in Alaska who voted for her their precious oil revenue sharing check, and that's much harder if gas is $20/barrel.
It's gonna get interesting.

I think this goes back to the argument that the oil industry isn't really a supply and demand market. OPEC will do as much as they can (by controlling production) to keep the money flowing.
I wish I wasn't banned from FTBFBA so I could ask Sink about the glorious thousand year oil reich and how treating America like a third world nation with regards to its natural resources is a good thing amidst a waning energy market. The crash of oil prices amid the slowing economy is epic. It's a pity that oil is fueling the piss out of deflation now.

Yeah, it's conspiracy when every financial expert says this is going to happen and OPEC themselves are talking about 80-100 dollars being a good equilibrium for oil.

I'm STILL waiting for the fucking price of food to come down.
Historically, does anyone know if the price of food ever went back down after gas prices go down? I'd like to go back to paying $3.50 for a pint of Ben & Jerry's instead of $5.00, please!
$4.00 for chicken and rice would be nice instead of $6.00! I'm tired of getting raped!
High gas price has been the *excuse* for everyone raising food prices.
(I know it's only part of the reason - ethanol is main reason, but no one will talk about it).

Food prices lag wildly behind energy prices. It's like a full year or so behind -- however, the weather cycle we're in currently is pretty wild. I don't really see food coming down any time soon. Ethanol is a scapegoat. You might as well start complaining about people growing non-food crops since it is the same difference.

I just want to beat the grocery store manager whenever I go in there. They'll run sales on junk food and soda, because no one is buying that stuff because the price of staples like bread, milk and eggs skyrocketed in the past year.

This is going to destroy America.
The middle east economy is set to operate on an oil barrel price of $75. Now that the price has plummeted they will not be able to afford all of their social programs and keep with their way of life. They will start going into debt as they will no longer have the funding to keep with their operations. Once that happens they start to sell off American treasury bills which will flood the market with dollars and reduce the value of our currency, which will set the entire thing into an even worse tailspin than we are in now, hyper inflation will start, and our economy will be worse than it has ever been in history.
It's going to be nice to pay nothing for gas in the short run but it's all going to blow up on us very soon.

With the economy in the shitter there is simply less demand. So the only thing those terrorists at OPEC can do is to lower prices to encourage consumption. As the economy falls, so will gas prices . . . . to a certain extent.

it's the lowest it's been in 3 years (close to where it was 4 years ago) so it's not nearly as simple as you make it sound.

How long till airline fares go down?
I wasn't trying to make it sound simple, just pointing out part of the reason.
Actually, taking inflation into account, gas is probably cheaper now than it has been since the 70's
