Cops raid suspected marijuana house, IT'S A TRAP
(http://www.reason.com/blog/show/130429.html?success=1)

KopBusters rented a house in Odessa, Texas and began growing two small Christmas trees under a grow light similar to those used for growing marijuana. When faced with a suspected marijuana grow, the police usually use illegal FLIR cameras and/or lie on the search warrant affidavit claiming they have probable cause to raid the house. Instead of conducting a proper investigation which usually leads to no probable cause, the Kops lie on the affidavit claiming a confidential informant saw the plants and/or the police could smell marijuana coming from the suspected house.

The trap was set and less than 24 hours later, the Odessa narcotics unit raided the house only to find KopBuster’s attorney waiting under a system of complex gadgetry and spy cameras that streamed online to the KopBuster’s secret mobile office nearby.

Read the article for more info.

So basically cops were setup, cops took the bait, and may have caused a world of shit for themselves.

Abuse of power? Should one of these people who "set the trap" be charged with something?

Discuss.

I think it's fine for groups like this to test their local constabulary if they feel there's corruption afoot.

I of course disagree with the statement that cops "USUALLY lie on search warrants,"
but if there was a problem in Odessa which this group thought wasnt being handled properly by the department's internal investigation unit, or wouldnt be had they made a complaint.

That said, taking the law into your own hands can always be a risky venture.
I'm glad no one was hurt during this lie.

Also, how were the trees detected? If they were growing in plain view, say, visible by looking into a window, the cops would be justified to get a search warrant...no lies required.

Edit: ok, just read the entire story, and if what it says is true, then the cops are wrong.

HOWEVER, I find it hard to believe that this guy set up a trap and just hoped the cops would just find it by chance... no phone call, no anonymous complaint of an odor coming from the house??? Fishy, I say.
