This was in the news recently, but I could find no thread about it.
Do you think Coldplay copied Joe Satriani?

Look at this....

Stealing chords . . . . OK, there are only so many chordal combinations.
Stealing melody phrases . . . . OK, there are only 12 notes.

Stealing both . . . . . douchebag.

Also, no video should be labeled Alizee if it does not include her shaking her tiny little ass.

The second video was a pretty good mix.

we had a discussion about this a long time ago on FBA... when the song just started becoming an annoyance...

I like some of their songs but cant stand seeing them live or listen to the recent stuff.

The Satch tune is nice to listen to. Vocals are overrated.

Coldplay is going to get creamed if this goes to trial. Even jurors who know nothing about music won't have trouble with this.

I think we can expect a press release saying both sides have reached an amiable agreement (details confidential, of course). Everybody has the utmost respect for each others' talents, blah, blah.

It's not just that it's the same melody... it's also the same key & tempo. The phrasing is even the same.
This is blatant theft. Satch will prob get a hefty sum AND points on the Coldplay album.

How the fuck can Coldplay deny this shit?

In court papers filed in Los Angeles, Coldplay also claim Mr Satriani's song "lacks originality" and should not receive copyright protection.

The guitarist's lawyer, Howard E King, said Coldplay's response was typical for copyright infringement cases and he reiterated that he thought the matter could have been resolved without legal action.

Following Mr Satriani's claim in December, Coldplay said in a statement on their website that the 52-year-old "did not write or have any influence on the song".

"If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental and just as surprising to us as to him," they added

So if a song sucks the artist is not protected by the law? Then Coldplay is not going to be able to protect their music from others who would copy it.
