I can almost deal with Ant's militant negro-hating more than this shit about Sleeves. Basically Ant hated Sleeve's xmas song, probably because it's emotionally and intellectually pretty heavy, two things Ant can't stand.
Sleeve's xmas song is an instant classic. The first time I heard it I had goosebumps. It's worthy of Tom Waits himself. The song could be on a Waits album and it would blend in perfectly. It's a Christmas song for adults.
More than anything else, the song describes pretty perfectly how I feel when I briefly get those child-like happy feelings remembering how I used to feel during Christmases when I was a kid.
Life can't all be about the smelliest vagina or seeing boobies in traffic.

And yes, he is amazing. Sleeves I mean.
Yeah definitely. I was just trying to rank it somehow and put it in context for people who haven't heard it. He has a similar sound to Waits. Piano, deep voice, very complex arrangements and production that sounds warm. Emotional. And it really is music for adults. You have to reach a certain level of experience to really identify with it I think, but I can't speak for people younger than me.
Every Sleeves Christmas song for the past three years has been insanely good. "It Takes a Rube" is one of the things I use to introduce initiates to Ron and Fez. That over-tipping bit coupled with the song is my new RF propaganda. Sort of saying, "look, talk radio can be funny and smart."
Anyway, RF fans are lucky as shit to have you Sleeves.
Not trying to shit all over O&A. They're entertaining too. But that shit today was ridiculous. I just caught it on the replay and couldn't believe my ears.

I agree. They both have pretty awful music taste.
Anthony is a funny dude, but he's a philistine. He's bashed some great musicians/bands before, one that comes to mind is the Frames, because they don't rock in the first measure. That don't (necessarily) make him a bad person. He just doesn't like songs that don't rock, or movies that don't have explosions, or TV shows that... well TV pretty much sucks. He's a bud-light guy with a champagne bank balance, he's white-trash-rich...

What annoyed me about Anthony's rants about the song today was that I pretty much figured that he trashed it because he decided it's not the kind of song it's "cool" for him to like. That is, it's not really anything about the song itself, but an expression of some persona Anthony's trapped in.
I loved Ronnie's sarcastic declarations of how he "didn't get" the song. He tore Anthony a new one without mentioning him by name at all.
It's a brilliant song, and I'll proudly pay up for it, as we all should. Well done, Mr. Sleeves.

I heard some of what Ronnie said today, but I hadn't heard O&A yet. Now I need to listen to today's RF again.
The thing that makes this beyond "hey it's just an opinion" is that Ant so thoroughly trashed someone who's linked real closely to the 202 universe. It would be like Ronnie trashing some U2 cover song Joe was doing and hurting his pocketbook. That sort of thing has an effect. Less people will go to the show or buy the song simply because one of the hosts trashed it. I can see getting in some light digs, but Ant couldn't keep himself from constantly bashing it.
AnnoyedGrunt
12-08-2008, 02:11 PM
Does anyone have the audio of this trashing? It doesn't surprise me that Sleeves didn't mesh with O&A show and I was surprised to hear Opie was interested in the first place. I don't mean that as a slight towards Sleeves at all since I've listened to his music a hell of a lot more than O&A over the past year.

The R&F show listened to the new Bond song and Dave liked it. Then Ron told him it sucked (I guess b/c it didn't sound like melodramatic Lou Reed). ESD then acted sad like he's not allowed to like it. People need to grow the fuck up and have some confidence in themselves and their tastes.

I was shocked at how much Ant hated the song. He completely missed it. Jimmy too, which is even more surprising. Ant's statement that the LALALALA's were just lazy fill-ins was shocking. I love that Opie is a big Sleeves fan. It was a shame that Ant decided to trash him so vehemently on a national radio show. I think the guy is an absolute genius and I find all of his work very entertaining. He should be heard around the world... But that's just my opinion.

Um, if someone made a good enough argument for it, I'd take a stranger's music recommendation, never mind the recommendation of hosts of a show I listen to on a daily basis. Do you listen to EVERY album that comes out and decide on your own if it's good or not? More likely you've heard the band before, read about it or had someone recommend it to you.

Yo Sleeves, I just got home from work. I heard Ant ranting in the last ten minutes of the FM portion of the show about your song, which really pissed me off. But I was horrified during the replay that I caught later in the afternoon that some douche did an instant feedback saying "Sleeves can fall into a lalalala lake" and it was said that it was Scott from Jersey, which instantly made me cringe, because not only do I LOVE the song, I downloaded it and put it on my iPod and sent a copy to my sister. I haven't heard such a melancholy Christmas tune since Sting did "Gabriel's Message" back in the mid-80s on that Christmas CD that had RUN-DMC's "Christmas in Hollis"
I love the song. Whoever the douche was that sent in the instant feedback WAS NOT ME! Sleeves, your song hit me real hard. I love playing it in Maple Shade on Main Street, and I just look around and feel just like the dude in the song. In fact, I'm gonna have a beer as soon as I post this.
Thanks again Sleeves, and I hope this clears things up.

RED ALERT! RED ALERT!
The O&A show made fun of Sam's father's looks today! Sam is a friend of the R&F show and we shouldn't put up with this!
We need to mobilize and make sure O&A never EVER do this again!
I think they also made fun of some wine thing as well. I think one time on R&F, someone mentioned liking some sort of wine. We don't have to stand by and let this happen, folks!!!
I'm holding a rally outside K-ROCK tomorrow morning at 6am to fight free speech.
(I'll post this in the other thread as well, so everyone can UNITE!)

I disagree that everyone on both shows has bad taste in music. Ron has introduced me to some great artists over the years. Opie, Dave and Earl have opened my eyes to some great bands as well... And Fez has, of course, shown me the genius that is Tom Petty.
And I can point to the show that finally got me addicted to R&F-the one where they were discussing the best albums rock artists made. You know the ones, like Quadrophenia, Ghost in the Machine and such, where you can listen to the whole album in one sitting, and not a bad track on the LP.
That was a great day in radio. And R&F has been my favorite show since.

RED ALERT! RED ALERT!
The other day I heard Ron saying some not-so-nice things about Earl on the air. You know Earl - he's the producer of the R&F show! I think we need to band together and let Ron know that we will NOT stand by and let him insult someone associated with the show. It's just NOT acceptable.
I also heard ESD yelling at Franklyn and that was just NOT nice at all! How MEAN can someone be? I mean c'mon! Franklyn is a friend of the show and shouldn't have to be subject to attacks!

I certainly don't let comedy radio hosts convince me that something I like is bad b/c they don't like it.

I'm always open to checking out something that is recommended. BUT I'll listen to it for myself and make my own decision. I'm not going to sit around forcing myself to listen to the Stones all day b/c a 202 host said they were cool. I think for myself.

Agreed!!!
I really hate to bash O&A, well more of the A this time anyway. Anthony is not the anthony he used to be. he seriously doesnt relate to regular people anymore.
a part of me wants to believe that Anthony is doing a "bit" raggin on sleeves, but i dont know, i think he's just being a fucking HOLIDAYYYYY DIVAAAAAA.
I now put my dedication behind sleeves. Fuck you Anthony. Fuck you in your snobby ass.
Sadly, I agree with your instinct that it's not a bit. I believe, like you, that he's an Anti-Holiday guy that has really lost touch with the regular folks. He likes to act like he's just an average Joe while he hangs out on Paltalk, plays with his guns and pops in on some of the Saturday night shows, but he's really turning into a recluse as he builds his Howard Hughes-like mansion around him. He's becoming completely anti-social. I hope he stays on the air for a very long time because he's a very funny guy and he helps me get through the day, but he's becoming thoroughly out of touch.
His opinion of Sleeves' music is baseless. It's just a shame he had to trash the song to a national audience... And it's not the same as fucking with Sam's dad and Earl. Sleeves is an artist outside of the show, trying to make his mark. Earl and Sam's dad are probably pretty set in their lives.

I hate to say it, I'm really starting to lean hard into the anti O&A camp. I've been listening less and less. Anthony has become everything he's railed against in Howard, because he's talking about all the shit he buys. Opie NEVER talks about his wealth outside of his new apartment.

I didn't listen to The Band until I started listening to R&F. Really good stuff, don't know how I missed it.
I never listened to Van Morrison until R&F introduced me to some of the non-radio stuff. I became a huge fan after I heard "Cleaning Windows" on the show. I wasn't a big John Mayer fan until he popped in and they talked about the John Mayer Trio album. I bought the album right after the interview and became a big fan. Despite the fact Mayer seems to want to be a magazine cover subject he really is a great guitarist. I would never had known that if not for his appearance on the show.

Why do you people take it so personally that he trashed his song? God forbid we have different opinions in this world. I like the song, but that doesn't mean everyone has to. It doesn't make you a better person because you "get" the song. Anthony didn't get the song. It's not his thing. So fucking what. They gave Sleeves national exposure on their show. How many of you Sleeves fanatics have gone and spent your money on the CD?
Your musical tastes don't make you "better" than anyone. It's pretty damn elitist and snobby that people have to trash Anthony for liking TOP-40 rock radio. That's his prerogative. Not everyone makes music their number one priority in life where they have to "dig in the crates" and find the most obscure music possible so they can have an air of superiority around other people. Here's a little picture for you people.

Get the fuck over yourselves. There is plenty of valid reasons to bash Anthony lately. The fact that he didn't like a Sleeves song isn't one of them. Besides Opie didn't "get" the song either which is why he couldn't explain it to Anthony and a caller had to go and explain it to him. Opie only liked it superficially, but I don't hear you people ripping him for not "getting" it.

1) Theres a difference between not liking something and outright trashing it, theres a difference between disliking a style or a song and attacking someone who didn't deserve it.
2) For someone who insults musical snobbery thats a snobby picture.
3) This is, for me at least MUCH more about how Anthony and Jimmy have made listening to that show less fun for me, I think for many people (at least with Ant) this is just the manifestation of what they've thought about him for a long time.
4) The Band, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, The Velvet Underground, these are the types of bands (and probablly THE bands/artists) I hear brought up fairly often around here, people are digging for these artists?
