Anyone else catching this? It's a 4-hour miniseries, a co-production of HBO and the BBC, about Saddam Hussein, starting with his (somewhat) bloodless coup to become President of Iraq, through the Iran-Iraq War, then Gulf War I, Gulf War II, and ending up with him being pulled out of a well looking like a maniac.
Saddam is an interesting character in this. He's brutal as hell: Part I shows the bizarre, creepy meeting he held when he called the National Assembly into session, and had a list of "conspirators" working with Syria dragged out of the assembly to their deaths, while Saddam leans back in his chair, smiling, a huge stogie in his mouth. He kills a lifelong friend without a second thought.
The guy playing Saddam, Igal Naor, does a great job capturing Saddam's psychopathic ambition and lust for power without making him looking like a total maniac. Only Parts I & II have been on so far, so we'll see how he does later in the story when Saddam really starts losing it.
Very highly recommended.
