HordeKing-

I understand that there is some kind of certification that psychologists can get in order to administer and score IQ tests (but maybe this is only for testing children).

Have you given/taken any (e.g. Stanford-Binet)? Would do you think about their credibility?

Each state has different licensing requirements for psychologists, psychotherapists, social workers, family therapists and the like. (They all agree that only an MD can call herself a psychiatrist).

I don't know of any certification necessary before administering IQ tests. Admittedly, this is far from my field of interest. I asked a number of people in the field (none of whom administer IQ tests) and uniformly they thought that no specific certification is necessary. It's not a definitive answer. I'll try to remember to make further inquiries about it.

Personally, I've taken several standardized IQ tests. My low score was 136, illustrating that I must not have been feeling well that day. 2 of my kids received similar IQ scores, with the third coming in in the high 120's.

Regarding validity of these tests, it must first be decided exactly what the test measures. Critics say that the test measures a person's ability to take that test. Others say that the IQ tests are only valid for a certain class of people - white, middle class, heterosexual and male. There have been people who tested in the gifted or even genuis range who do not function well and work in jobs where intelligence is not a factor. Conversely, some who've tested low, have been very successful.

On the other hand, IQ scores show remarkable correlation with actual intelligence, and the ability to learn.

In my opinion, environmental factors are not given enough weight in determining what the scores represent. A person with a high IQ in a stiffling environment that does not afford them opportunity to exercise their intelligence will not develop them to the same extent as a less gifted child in a supportive environment that encourages creativity and expression.

BTW, 100 is the average IQ, in terms of modality and means.
