Oh wise and mighty Oracle, please answer this burning question of mine - when will this insidious "reality TV" crap end? It's unwatchable tripe, and I'd say 90% of it (if not more) is totally scripted.

Are people that talentless and lazy that they can't come up with an original concept for a show?

As always, thanks for the wisdom you impart.

Your best buddy and pal,

G

I enjoyed that show in that town with the serial killer, too bad it was canceled after one season.

when the money runs out.

It likely won't. As it was pointed out, these shows are relatively dirt cheap to create and produce and require much less of a return to turn a profit than "regular" TV shows.

In fact, I don't want these shows to go away. I simply won't watch them, but they ultimately provide the revenue and clout through their success for some of the networks to put out the few quality shows that I do like.

do you mean all reality shows or just a certain type? a large chunk of reality shows are not too dissimilar from sporting events and game shows. the kids sitting around a house show are a waste. to me.

I don't think it will ever die out completely. I think we'll see less of it over time, but not for a little while yet. As someone else said the costs v. potential profits is just too tempting.

It won't die rather it will become part of the tv fabric. I would compare it to the Game Show genre.

What do you consider "Reality TV" ... I know Survivor, Amazing Race and the like, but is Top Chef, The First 48 & Intervention in there too? Cause I love those...

and as an afterthought if you got rid of Reality Shows we'd lose The Soup and that's my faorite of the week...permanently DVR'd

I think the lesson of the announcement that Jay Leno will be doing his hack act every weeknight of prime time is the final sign that scripted TV is dead as dogshit.

My hope at this point is just that cable, basic or premium, takes up the slack. We'll see.

Shitty fucking reality TV is one of the reasons I stopped watching TV years ago.

It's fucking ruined the idea of what a network can offer us as entertainment completely. They put some cameras on bad actors and feed it to us? Why do you watch this dogshit?

Just stop.

Reality TV will not die.... but some unwilling participants might.

I didn't see this story posted here, it happened a couple months ago:

Brazil TV host 'ordered killings' (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8196564.stm)

Police have accused a TV presenter in Brazil of being involved in organised drug trafficking and ordering killings to get rid of rivals and boost ratings.

Wallace Souza, who is also a state legislator, says the claims are an attempt by rivals to smear him and that there is no evidence to back them.

But the police say he ordered killings in the state of Amazonas and alerted TV crews to get them to the scene first.

His TV show was halted late last year as police stepped up their inquiry.

If what the police say is true, then this is the TV show that not only reported crime, but was actually behind it as well.

NOW... there is an update....

Accused Brazil TV host 'missing' (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8294020.stm)

Police in Brazil say a TV crime show host accused of ordering killings to boost his ratings has gone missing after his arrest warrant was issued.

It's really not impossible to believe that it could get close to the accusations of this story. It remains to be seen if it is true or not, but it just seems like we could have a Running Man or Series 7 type show in the near future.

as long as its cheap to make and has modest ratings success so they turn a profit

its never goin away
