View Full Version : Old School Video Games: What're you Playing?

I'll preface this by saying I still own an NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis and Game Cube, and am still collecting and loving old games, so I was wondering what you guys were playing.
Right now I just received in the mail from EStarland.com (great site) three games I'm enjoying.
The first is Final Fight for the SNES, a classic beat em up that as I'm playing it definitely holds up. By today's standards it's a bit homoerotic,
http://www.gameguru.in/images/final-fight-wii-1.jpg
but that's ok.
I also got Spiderman/X-men, also for SNES, which I never played but heard good things about and it's going pretty well so far.
Also I got Duck Tales for the NES cause an old Angry Video Game Nerd video had a good review for it.
So what are you all into right now?

I still play Tecmo Super Bowl for NES once in a while. It's fun to play a season with a different team and rack up the stats.
I was playing Dragon Warrior for a while, when I had some time to kill.
I was trying to play some NHL '94 the other day, but my Sega Genesis doesn't seem to be working.
Wizards & Warriors on NES recently as well.

I rarely break out my old systems, but I've been a total sucker for all the ports they've put out for the DS. I'm constantly playing Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World, and right now I'm playing Chrono Trigger. I only actually ever beat the game once, and now I'm gonna go through it and try to see all the endings.

Two weekends ago, my son and I got tired of playing Madden '09 and decided to hook up my old Intellivision which still works. We played NFL Football along with a whole mess of other games. It was pretty fun for about a half hour and then the novelty started to qucikly wear off for my son.
I'm pretty sure that this is the very first NFL licensed game ever. Suck on that, EA Sports!

Damn man, I was going to say the same thing. I still play Dragon Warrior when I get the chance. A short but fun game for the NES I still play is Rescue: The Embassy Mission. I also have a go at Final Fantasy VI on the SNES once in a while. When we're drunk my friends and I play GoldenEye as well. I've never stopped playing Life Force.

I loved bionic commandos. One of the best ending to a game. When I use to play that I never saw that ending coming. Wish more games from today had this sort of ending and pay off.
Also still love the first two metal gear games.
Super Mario I was addicted to...have to find a good emulator. I had one but now I am running into problems. Can't get a clear screen.

Last weekend I was playing Contra and Super C on the DS and some Dr Mario on the NES while I was waiting for my girlfriend to show up.
I also got Spiderman/X-men, also for SNES, which I never played but heard good things about and it's going pretty well so far.
I had that one and a kid and I think it does get unfairly trashed online. However, the main problem is you have to beat the tedious opening level every single time.
A short but fun game for the NES I still play is Rescue: The Embassy Mission.
That one was great but I would have sworn nobody had ever played that except for me and a friend before I got online.

What exactly are G Factor games?
I don't know about that exact model but I've heard those after market systems are a mixed bag. There are sometimes issues with replicating the graphics and sound. It's still playable but the tint of the sky in Mario is wrong. I know Castlevania 3 won't work on most of those systems because of some chip and I'm sure there are others as well.

River City Ransom is by far one of the best two player games for the NES. The thing that sucks is that once you start you have to finish because the passwords takes a half hour to write down and never works.
Metroid and Super Metroid hold up.
NHL on Genesis where you could make them bleed on the ice. You can't beat Bob Probert on the Red Wings.
Madden 92 when you injure the QB and the ambulance runs over anyone it its way and you can turn off computer assisstance. I beat the Browns with the Madden team by over two hundred points once. It was awesome.
Tyson's Punch Out (not the re-release where Tyson was replaced by a white guy)
Super Punch Out was fun on shrooms.
The first Final Fantasy on NES is still fun.
I still break out Goldeneye and Mario Kart 64. Cruisin' 64 was great because you could play with one hand.
Bad Dudes and Double Dragon kicked ass.
Street Fighter 2 Turbo soaked up a large portion of my adolesence. I still like Ken better because his uppercut shoots out a little bit. M. Bison cost me more than one controller with his fucking electrical torpedo and gay head stomp.
Bump n' Jump and Toobin' on the NES.
Spy Hunter was better in the arcade.
I still have nightmares of all the sneaker squeaking from Double Dribble.
Wizards and Warriors and Castlevania 2.
I would like to get another Power Glove just to take it out into the desert and shoot it.

Super Mario Bros 3 is still my favorite game of all time to this day, usually play through it once a year along with Super Mario World. Other than that I love Galaga, Joust, Root Beer Tapper (I should hate everything about that game but for some reason it's addicting as hell) and the original Mortal Kombats and Street Fighters
I put Secret Of Mana on hold, and moved on to Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life.
I'm a big geek for the Harvest Moon games...nothing says excitement like farming simulator
That whole series is seriously one of those games where you can't really figure out why you like it.

I've been trying to remember the name of an old school, text based, computer trading game and it's been bugging me for a while. I think in the game you are based out of the original 13 colonies, or some kind of colony I think around that era. You would sail from port to port, buying and selling commodities for profit. We played it in grade school i guess as a way to teach us commerce.
Also, for all of you Philadelphia area people, they used to have a station with 3 or 4 monitors with this game installed, set up somewhere on the top floor of the Franklin Institute for kids to play.
This is all back in the 80's btw.
