Howard Stern tells listeners "I believe I am going to leave after two years." His $500 million five-year contract expires in January 2011 and he signals he may be looking for a life outside radio altogether. He says he was ready to quit after his last CBS Radio contract, but was lured to Sirius.

Listen to the show now and this won't surprise you. He sounds like he's running out the string.

The "revolution" turned out to be the same damn show with some more "fucks" in it.

God Speed Mr. Stern.

Seriously, money aside, why not retire? He has been doing this for a long now and at some point I am sure, waking up at 4 AM gets to be mundane. I know getting up at 5 gets old pretty quick.

Is Howard Stern looking to retire from the world of radio when his contract with Sirius XM Radio Inc. comes to an end in 2010? The topic came up during Thursday's show.

"This is my swan song," Stern told a caller on the air.
On his show Thursday, Howard Stern expressed how he wanted to spend more time with his new wife Beth. He also has various other projects he's working on. After two more years, Stern said he thinks he's "done."

Stern pointed out that he was ready to retire after his prior contract - but, as we all know, he didn't. Instead, he signed the famous 5-year, $500 million contract with Sirius.

The question is, would such a lucrative contract be offered to renew Stern and keep him on satellite radio? Or would the company offer more flexible hours to keep the Howard Stern name on the roster?

"If I could work out a deal with Sirius where I work on my own terms, I'd think about it," Stern told producer Gary Dell'Abate.

I don't listen to Stern, how often does he do a live show anymore? Is his show still 5 hours? Man, his show during the late 80's/early 90's was fucking amazing. Some of the best radio ever.

A cash grab? If Stern thinks he'll get another penny out of already stuggling satel. radio he's nuts. Let him go..give the money to the boys, improve equipment and let satel. soar.

as per mark friggins' (http://www.marksfriggin.com/news08/12-8.htm#thu) ridiculously comprehensive site:

Gary asked Howard about leaving in two years. He wondered if that's pretty definite. Howard said that he's really not sure at this point but he's heard that there is a lot of work out there for them if they do leave. Howard said there are other venues that want them. Howard said that if he's not on SIRIUS he's done. He said that nothing gets better than this and if this show is gone, he's done. Howard said that he's not going to do movies and stuff like that. He said this is really the best.

Howard said he's not sure he'd do a talk show because he's just hire people to do comedy sketches and stuff. Howard said that he might keep the channels running there if the company wants him to do that. The caller suggested that they just cut the show back to a couple of days a week. Howard said he might do that.

Howard said that he would do a couple of days a week and maybe take the whole summer off. Howard said that if the fans don't want that then he's not going to do any show. Gary said that Barbara Walters only does one show a week. Howard said that the company would have to want that too. It would be a whole thing they'd have to discuss.

Howard said that Bubba is a real talent and they should put money into his show and keep him around. Robin said that they should think about that because Howard might be leaving in a couple of years. Howard said she's right.

Fred said that they have to think about what CBS did replacing Howard and how that didn't work out. They need to have people like Bubba around to replace Howard when he leaves. Howard said that he's heard some stories about their old Los Angeles station and how they're thinking about doing away with the talk format and going to music. He said that might happen soon too.

Howard said that he knows that they wouldn't go to music if they had that ''compelling person'' on the air they wouldn't have to go back to the music format. He said that ''compelling person'' doesn't want any part of that nonsense anymore so he won't be going back to that. The guys talked about what that ''compelling person'' would do if he was offered some ridiculous deal. Howard was saying that he doesn't think he'd do it.

Howard said that things have changed in radio since he got into it. He said that you have a better chance of being a professional baseball player than you do becoming a radio star. Howard said there are people out there with real talent and you have to go out and try it but you might be in for some heartbreak. Howard said he's met a lot of guys along to the way who had no talent in radio. Howard said the guys with the good voices can still make a living even if they don't have any other talents. He said the odds are like a billion to one to make it though.

Howard said that you have to go out and give it a try if you think you can make it. Howard said that sometimes you can go to work at Denny's and end up the CEO of the company.

He has the most flexible hours of any radio host. His schedule has been 4 days a week, 4 hours a day for what 2 years now? And, he takes random days off here and there, more than R&F take in an entire year.

"If I could work out a deal with Sirius where I work on my own terms, I'd think about it," Stern told producer Gary Dell'Abate.

I third the good riddance sentiment. He was relevant in the 80s and first half of the 90s.

The whole "History" series has been incredibly good. It was great to hear some of those old bits and I thought the interviews were well done. Lots of behind the scenes goodness and not a whole lot of over the top self-promotion.

Damn that was great radio in its day. Too bad he didn't know when to ride off into the sunset. Doing it in 2 years is about 10 years too late.

I wish that was how it worked, but him leaving will hurt the company more than anything else. They've paid him his money, its not like leaving is going to free up a bunch of liquid assets.

I say:
1. Low-ball him, and if he doesn't like the offer, let him walk.
2. Give the remainder to Ron and Fez.
3. Hire Mooch.

Here is the thing. Howard is playing Mel. Howie is not the only circumsize cock in the hen house now since merger. So he is going to mel and saying "oy I am not sure if I can take these 4 day work weeks and all this money you throw at me Mel"Howard does not like the competition and knows Mel is true to the tribe and may consider letting ONA go before letting douchebag stern go.

Ya know, i was very excited about the merger b/c it gave me a chance to listen to stern again after years of bad mouthing him myself ( i was a huuuuuge fan up until 97 or 98)

Well, i was and have been very pleased with his show. He can get preachy and his disconnect with the regular joe is overly apparant, but fuck, the guy knows how to put on a good show.

This has only been highlighted by the sub par bull shit OnA have been puttin out since, well, the merger. (nervous much?)

I ghostwrote for Stern 1993-95 thru Jackie Jokeman on cassette tapes I'd send to the show.I paid pretty close attention to the show as possible 1987 to the end of the 90's.I had a distinct parting with him on excluding stand-up comics as a regular "goldmine" of talent that seemed endless in the 80's.Stern wasn't interested and was anti-stand-up even with Jackie offering him a bottomless well of friends and even his competition as fair game for show fodder.Rodney Dangerfield was one shining example, but JUST TO SHAME Jackie....malevolent dick move on his part, about a money issue between Jackie and Dangerfield.Exploitation radio at its best. Fortunately O&A saw the light with Jimmy and rotated several of their fave friend stand-ups and at least mention even the ones they hate and rivals in the biz pulling no punches. In this case Stern couldn't get over his monster ego for the betterment of the show and payoff for the listener.Stern who was wealthy even then could have hired better writers like the tv networks, yet was too cheap and lost market for that reason and others by not keeping it fresh.I hate to compare him with SNL,but they have a rotation, and sometimes that works.Football teams ,same thing.I'm 4 years younger than Stern . http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a221/jlehane3/BigFredGaryDellaBatecrSmall.jpg Fred and Gary /Stern show at live show personal appearance early 2000's in Delaware I videotaped.I turned Fred and Jackie on to seeking out Stern and getting hired 1982.

how bout this is his way of getting fired and not telling people hes getting fired(saving face)
there is no concievable way that he would do this
especially the contract is most likely back loaded and inflated, and with the owning company looking shakey, its not that suprising

and with internet radio and pod casts, and his money taken care of, it wont be the end of howard stern

I felt the same way. I would get a few downloads from time to time since he went to Sirius and enjoyed the show on a nastalgia level.

I won't say I hate the guy because I was loyal for so many years. I just got sick of his shit toward the end of his CBS days (Like I'm starting too with O&A). Howard Stern will be around in some form or another for a long time. He might not have to work a live show anymore, but his tapes are a channel in themselves which he would continue to draw a salary from.

The posting copied from his text replay was right about one thing, to make it big in todays radio scene would be one in a billion.
