I have a hard time accepting new punk bands for some reason. Maybe cuz the bands I grew up on, wouldnt be caught dead on Mtv or Johnny Carson/leno/letterman. I mean, I like offspring & Green day. they have some catchy songs. BUt I cant bring myself to call em punk rock. I am sorry to you all..

In my opinion, bands like Green Day, Offspring, Blink 182 & all these newer bands (that get commercialized) are the furthest thing from punk...
The only "REAL" punk band I ever recall seeing on any TV show was a band called FEAR that played on a really old episode of Saturday Night Live...had to be in the early 80's... other than that, I can't remember any Punk bands actually appearing on a network TV show.

I have to admit I don't really consider them "punk" either, but I do like Green Day a lot. I'm not a big fan of categorizing music in the first place, and I think it would be great if there was a station that would play good music regardless of what "genre" they've decided it falls into.

i don't consider green day to be a punk band. all of the bands that you were referring to (green day, blink 182, offspring, etc) are basically just pop bands with a sort of really mild punk aesthetic.
the only vaguely punk thing that green day ever did was to cover operation ivy's "knowledge"... and even that (while not bad) was slowed down to a non punk pace

Green Day desparately wants to be punk, and at one point I really think they thought they were, but it just never happened. Offspring and Sum 41, I think, realize their place as pop bands and are happy to just go along with the ride.
Blink 182, however, is crap. I better not ever catch them trying to claim that they're punk, or else I'll kick them about the head with my Doc Martens.

That's really the most important sentence of what you wrote. I know it's just a simple discussion, but it doesn't really matter what they're called.
I saw Green Day at Lollapalooza right before they hit it big, and they were entertaining as all hell. That's what counts, I think: are they entertaining?
<br>Have a wonderful holiday season.

I was at Warped Tour recently and I have to say most of the bands that like to call themself Punk blew chunks out of my ass. Sure there were a few bright spots(namely Fear, AFI, and some others). Oh and any band that spends all trying to convince you they are punk is not punk.

Rancid are the biggest fucking posers I've ever seen in my life. They are more Pop than anything.
Green Day cannot really be considered Punk. Aside from the whole "selling out" issue, they sound like a pop band. Their last album was the biggest peice of garbage I ever had the pleasure of smashing against my wall. They have been reduced to making short, radio-friendly songs to sell records, thats it.

Just because Billy Joe from Green day appears on stage naked or wearing only a sock that doesnt make him punk...and how about these wannabe SKA bands like No Doubt and the likes...

No Doubt...*sigh*
a long long LONG time ago they were pretty good, before I'm Just a Girl and all that (not like that song's not ok too, it is, but I consider it the beginning of the band's downfall into mainstream pop shit).
And now what's happened? I can't even watch their videos without laughing at how pathetic they've become.
pop and poop
better yet
pop = poop
*sorry if I offended anybody with the above statement. :)

I am sure tha no one takes offense to that OPM girl...as a matter of fact I have a feeling that you speak what everyone is thinking...I mean music is so shot anymore that when I do listen to a music station it is to either the Q (when O and A or Ron and Fez arent on). Or, try not to snicker at this one, and 101.1 (sometimes). Ill flip through on the latter and see if they have some ole school MoTown...I am so disullusioned by todays music that I find K-Rock so lame (anybody remember Q104 before they went classic rock?? They kicked ass), and the pop stations so aggravating that I am actually turning to older rock. And I am not just talking Zepplin or Sabbath, but rather like Buddy Holly, and old school shit like that...Music today is so mainstreamed right away that even the coolest of acts are done right away. I mean How long before a Creed behind the music?? And dont give me that they are sanctimonious that it wont happen, Scott Stipes head is so big I am surprised it fits into some stadiums...There is no offense in the truth. The only offense is in discovering that the truth means that worlds have to change a bit from the brainwashing that took place before hand...The truth is ALWAYS good.

there already is a creed behind the music. it's the sappiest garbage i ever saw. there is only a few good mainstream bands, chilli peppers, beastie boys, U2, and that's about it. everyone else sucks fat nutbag. you want real music listen to beck, or pearl jam, or blind melon, or weezer. if it's on TRL or Krock 98% of the time is suh hucks
it's true,
it's damn true!

let me tell you that greenday and every shit band like them are nothing close to being punk rock. they are garbage trying to commercialize a non commercial form of music. bad religion did and now they have suffered. opening for blink 182. bands like that make me sick. luckily face to face pulled out quickly. their album ignorance is bliss was such a disgrace. i think a couple of the songs got on k-rock. i guess they needed a quick buck, but thankfully god said no to this and k-rock dropped it and they began to make awsome records again. so, before i go off again, greenday and blink and those other shitty bands are nothing. they should all be fucking poisoned, shot, hanged, and quatered for even thinking of calling themselves punk rock.
<IMG SRC=http://members.aol.com/toksik555tdk/myhomepage/georgey.jpg?mtbrand=AOL_US>
i think bands like green day and blink and whomever else went out with the best of punk intentions, but they evolved, i think they make great music, personaly but are they punk anylonger? well who knows, really depends on your definition of punk, are they doing what they love and not caring who likes them and who doesnt. i think thats punk. maybe the style is more "rock" but ive seen theyre behind the music and i think they are punk as hell

The Ramones on The Uncle Floyd Show.
Punk as fuck!
And I'm sorry, Johnny Cash is the original punk, not Buddy Holly. Johnny Cash was the first white guy in music to say fuck the press, fuck the record company, fuck the recording industry, I'm gonna put more drugs than any horse can handle in my body, and I'm gonna shoot anyone that gets in my way. The fucker did time. THAT is punk rock.
