Is there such a thing as an "atheist"?

Well, I already had a conversation about this with someone on the board, if you are truly an atheist you must believe there is nothing to believe ergo believing exists so wouldn't the more correct term be, "non-practicing"?

Help me out here, HK or anyone.

To expand on what AM said, atheists don't believe that god exists (or for some, that God can exist).

Of course we believe other things - the information we obtain from our senses and intellect for example.

OOPS, I also wanted to diffrentiate b/w atheism and agnosticism.

As noted above, atheists believe that god doesn't exist or can't exist.

Agnostics believe that the existence of god is improbable, but more importantly, that the ultimate underlying reality (including the existence of god) is fundementally unknowable.

There are also positive and negative Atheists. A negative Atheist is much more passive about. A Positive Atheist is firmer about their beliefs.

Isn't Eli Wiesal(sp?) an athiest? He wrote that book 'Night'. He doesn't believe in God because he just doesn't feel that God would things like the holocaust happen.
