View Full Version : ShopRite Refuses to make a Cake...for Adolf Hitler
Misteriosa
12-16-2008, 12:58 PM
From consumerist.com
ShopRite is really making me question my ethics this morning: They denied making a cake for a 3-year old's birthday, but only because that child's name happens to be Adolf Hitler.
Heath and Deborah Campbel's oldest child, Adolf Hitler Campbell, got turned down when his parents attempted to request a cake for their little bundle of joy. ShopRite's response:
"We believe the request ... to inscribe a birthday wish to Adolf Hitler is inappropriate," said Karen Meleta, a ShopRite spokeswoman.
Seems... Reasonable? The Campbell's don't seem to think so...
"ShopRite can't even make a cake for a 3-year-old," said Deborah Campbell, 25, who is Heath's wife of three years and the mother of the children. "That's sad."
I suppose I see their stance... I mean, sure, they also named another one of their children "Aryan Nation", but do they have a point? Feel free to discuss either sides ethical questions, but rest assured: one local retailer knows their scruples.
Young Adolf Hitler Campbell will be getting a cake from Wal-Mart this year.

I read a story about this family yesterday. Both parents are on permanent disability (he's 35 and has emphysema, she is 25 with a bad back). Yet they have money for lots of Nazi memorabilia in their house. How I wish CPS could/would step in and remove these children.

True story: my friends, who are German-Americans, have an Octoberfest party at their house every year and if you go you're only allowed to bring some German related food. They're quite anal about it and its quite annoying. How many fucking German things can you think to bring?
One year I brought cannolis and claimed it was in tribute to the Axis ally. But my friend did me one better. He got a store bought cake at Pathmark and had them write "Heil Hitler" on it. He said they never questioned him. So, my advice is go to Pathmark for all your White Supremacist pastry needs.

what annoys me is that not they would chose the last names as middle names.
this shit would not fly in Germany, there are laws and rules and don't just let parents pick just any name.

We really are turning into one of those societies like we used to see in old B movies where certain words or names are forbidden. At the time we mocked such fictional peoples for not understanding the basic freedoms we as Americans enjoy. Now that we're in such a politically correct America, we have become what we used to mock.

That's what I'm saying. They are just words and names, they cannot hurt anyone. I think I prefer Adolf to Hunter any day. Yanks are too sensitive about names, and you people need to lighten up. That's why you don't see too many Jesus' outside the hispanic community.... Incidentally. There are still people with the last name of Hitler in the world who had nothing to do with the Holocaust.

It is fucked up that they named their kids this way but I still don't think they should be forced one way or another. At least this way everyone that comes in contact with these children in the future will know exactly what to expect from the parents. I would even guess that there is a little bit of self-destructive tendencies in these parents. It is sad, though, that they're using their kids in that way.

Hitler is a last name, not a middle name. Nobody says anything about them calling a child Adolf, the addition of Hitler and the supidity to call a girl Aryan Nation... that's not even a name in the least.

why should there be rules to what people name there kids? why should any government decide what is a proper name for a kid? what if someone named katja killed, say about 6 million jews tomorrow, should the government tell you that you can't have your name because it will be offensive to some people. granted, i think the parents are tools for doing this, but who are we to say that can't because people might get offended.

the name Adolf is not forbidden, neither is the last name Hitler
it's crazy fantasy names that they outrule... made up stuff that is ridiculous... and you can get a permit or get the name registered , but it takes a little effort which lazy people are not willing to give

I do agree to an extent that it is the parents choice and they are entitled to be idiots in regards to name choices. But some of the more "out there" choices are obviously an attention-seeking mechanism, or possibly a sign of some type of mental deficiency, and why should the kid suffer.

We all agree that any parent(s) who would name their kid "Adolf Hitler", "Arayan Nation" or even "Rock Paper Scissors" is a moron and I'd even venture to assume they are beyond selfish, because it's probably only done for shock value without them having the slightest foresight into their childs lives or because they are just idiots.
I do have a serious question though: What if a child originating from another country comes to Germany to live and he/she holds a name the German government deems to be "crazy/fantasy/ridiculous", would he/she be asked/told to change it?
I probably sound stupid for asking, but I'm really curious.

Theres no argument for this. Parents have the right to name their kids anything they want. And when the kids old enough, they have the right to change it. Government has no business being involved in the decision whatsoever. Youre never gonna win that argument.
I agree with Shoprite where if they dont want to make the cake, they dont have to.
I also agree with Walmart where if they do want to make the cake, they should.
Its kind of the old adage where people dont care about things are offensive, unless its offensive to them. You cant have it both ways. This is America, the people have a right to be dickheads. Gotta learn to accept that.

so if we need absolutely no regulations on how to name people then it won't matter if people just have a first name and no last... or just a last and no first... how about we just name them after the alphabet... who cares, as long as they have a social security number to be identified by... (which was not the original reason for social security numbers being assigned... )
I don't think that the countries that have regulations on it bud in it the way you think, apparently looking at the New Zealand article they are definitely letting bizarre names fly.
Of course, this is the FREEDOM the forefathers fought for... sure
Just look at any amendment and how it still is regulated by the states.
On another note... came across the picture of the family... I feel sorry for this adorable boy having to carry this name.

so if we need absolutely no regulations on how to name people then it won't matter if people just have a first name and no last... or just a last and no first... how about we just name them after the alphabet... who cares, as long as they have a social security number to be identified by...

I don't think I'd even be as annoyed with these people if they admitted the reason why they gave their kids these names, which is because they are attention seeking racist fucks. The father says its not because of hate, yet the guy has like 20 swastika tattoos on him. Then they say they are hurt because of people singling them out now because of the names and that THOSE people are racist! What the fuck! They aren't angry with you because you are white, they are angry because you are morons!

Somewhere, little Benito Mussolini Carter is crying because he won't be getting a cake this year.
They turned me down for my "Happy Birthday Jeffery Dahmer" head and power drill cake for my nephew, Jeffery Dahmer Magillicuddy.

If they're going to give him the name they may as well have the mustache tattooed onto his upper lip so that he's completely fucked. Does Wal-Mart have tattoo parlors in their supercenters yet? Won't be long.

So I guess the whole "Would you kill baby Hitler?" conundrum
has now gone from a hypothetical situation to a real possibility.
Choose wisely.

Bumping this because the kids got removed by DYFS:
http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/ny-usnazi0115,0,5816671.story
HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, N.J. - Police say three New Jersey siblings whose names have Nazi connotations have been placed in the custody of the state.
Holland Township Police Sgt. John Harris says he was there to keep order Tuesday when workers from the state Division of Youth and Family Services removed 3-year-old Adolf Hitler Campbell and his younger sisters, JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell.
Harris says DYFS did not tell police the reason the children were removed. DYFS spokeswoman Kate Bernyk says the child-welfare agency does not comment on specific cases.
The children and their parents, Heath and Deborah Campbell, received attention last month when a northwestern supermarket bakery refused to put Adolf Hitler Campbell's name on a birthday cake.

How dumb of them to direct the attention on themselves with this case. At least Dyfs checked into it this time. Good for the kids.
Huh that's surprising. They seemed like such good parents too.

The problem is, I hope DYFS has documented abuse in the case. Otherwise, the ACLU is going to have a field day.

Define "abuse."
It can be loosely construed to include poor naming choices for an initial removal with a pending investigation.
You really don't need much "documentation" to file a protection order. And DYFS has taken a ton of heat in the last few years that they're probably going to overreact.
Of course, it helps that the kids are adorable. And white.

So all of the kids were taken away by DYFS because they found that the dad was abusing the mom and she was denying the abuse.
Fast forward to today:
She had another baby, which they named "Hons", granted, I'm sure there's omse bullshit nazi correlation there but not so much that it'll mess up the kid.
DYFS pulls the kid 17 hours after it's born.

The parents are scumbags, but surely, DYFS is overstepping by pulling the kid 17 hours after it's born?

I dont know the story other then the bday cake but why did they remove the first 3? When you say abuse was the father beating them, sexual or because he was a natzi supporter and they say he was abusing them by teaching them his fucked up beliefs?

From what I read, the father was allegedly beating the mother and she was "denying" it.
It could be a bullshit excuse to get the kids out of the house based on their names, who knows. DYFS isn't talking because of confidentiality.

So its probably what I was thinking which is they removed the kids b/c the parents are teaching their kids fucked up shit. But my only problem with this is why dont they do that to overly religious people? Like the WBC? Shouldnt all those kids and grand kids under 18 be removed from that home?

DYFS is a state, not national, agency. You have to talk to Kansas authorities about Westboro.
