There sems to be a big push to anoint Caroline Kennedy to replace Hilary Clinton in the Senate. Her only qualification seems to be her last name. Is she no longer married so that she has given up Shlosshberg(sp?). She has essentially been a stay at home mom for the last fifteen years. What do you think?

She has a little more than her last name - she's dedicated much of her life to public service, which is a very good start considering politicians are supposed to be working for the people. She also authored books on civil liberties.
Is she qualified? I don't know. But I'll wait for her to present her case before I dismiss her because of her last name.

she looks just like ted kennedy. i wonder if she, too, killed someone while drunk driving/date rape, then paid off the victim's family to not make a big stink?
america's royal family.

Yawn.
I have no clue whether the people of the State of New York think she is qualified. But to play the "Ted is a drunk, so she is a drunk" game is just idiotic.

jealous?
I spent the fall outraged that Sarah Palin was nominated as Vice President. I'm sure as hell not going to support Caroline Kennedy. But it's not my state so it don't matter that much for me.

She never took her husband's last name, although the press often calls her that.

Here's my thing...
I think there's a legitimate gripe when citing past legislative or executive experience as an issue for someone running for President.
I don't think it's one in regards to someone running for the Senate.
There are a ton of people with no previous government experience, who either come from the private sector, or the different lobbies, who run for U.S. Senate every election cycle.
I'm not sure exactly how many current senators didn't have previous legislative experience right now, but it's not a very uncommon occurance.
And part of the reason is because you are 1 of 100. There is an enormous check on the power of ONE senator. So it's an office where voters can afford to pay a bit more attention to someone's ideas.
Same goes for the U.S. House.
The Presidency is a different animal, though.

I just wish governors in general would just stick to two principles when appointing replacements for vacant seats
1. Replace party for party. The people took party into consideration when in the voting booth.
2. Replace with an elected official. If in this case, a federal senator, replace with an elected official from the state senate. If a state senate seat becomes open, replace with a mayor of a major city or someone like a county chairman.
I'm sure Ms. Kennedy is a nice person, and I have heard about what she has done regarding politics. But I don't think it is fair for citizens to have someone appointed to an office who has never faced the voters in an election.

All I wonder is who our elected Gov'na would have selected for this seat?
I don't support this at all, mostly because I feel special elections should be held in all cases like this with the exception of perhaps death in office. Either the people vote or the State Senate appoints, it shouldn't be left up to one man.
Also it just seems to be less about qualifications and more about a media circus. But what else is new?

Given immediate family history, if appointed, how long can we expect her to last?
Besides, someone from upstate or western NY needs more say. Schumer needs to no longer be overshadowed.

What Paterson should do is appoint Andrew Cuomo. Cuomo is the most likely Democrat to unseat Paterson, since Paterson was never actually elected governor. Putting Cuomo in the senate would remove a big obstacle to Paterson getting elected in 2010.
Then again, one of the big reasons that Cuomo is AG is because of his last name. Ron was truly correct when he said that we don't want democracy in this country, we want royalty.
That would be then end of an er-ra, er-ra, er-ra...

Ummm... She "peaks" at around 1:50
I gotta say that as a Republican, I really hope she gets it. NY would have a weak Senator and an even weaker governor- neither of whom were elected to their current positions. (Seriously, Paterson was just another blind guy who ended up on the same ticket as the Spitzer's 06 deluge)
I'm not too much into NY politics, but it seems to me that Governor Patterson is in an awful spot on this one. He's obviously got to make a "popular" move, but it seems whatever pick he makes will definitely piss a few off.

What was Obama thinking picking Hillary? Kerry was the first major endorsement he got and he had a ton of foreign policy experience and it seemed like he was jockeying for the Secretary of State job big time. I wonder how many people knew of Kennedy and Cuomo's ambitions before Hillary was chosen?

Because Kerry still hasn't overcome the stigma of having lost 2004, and for better or for worse that pretty much sinks somone in that position.

So let's recap. The case for Caroline Kennedy seems to be she's smart, she went to law school, she works to raise money and although not a native she's actually lived in NY. Oh, and Camelot will be back in our lives.
So what if we were talking about a Caroline Schlossberg instead? A Park Ave. wife and mother, a schiksa who married a Jewish guy (but didn't convert), a trust-fund baby, a law school graduate who's never made a living at it and a person who's helped raise money for political causes but probably the only part of NY she knows is Manhattan and maybe the Hamptons. Would anybody even consider this person to be appointed to the U.S. Senate?
I don't wish them ill, but it's past time for the Kennedys to go away. We don't need Caroline in the Senate, Ted needs to retire and work on his health, Ted's son needs to get out of the House of Representatives and work on getting off whatever "cold medication" he's on, and Robert, Jr. needs to stop running around with Hugo Chavez and going on TV lecturing the rest of us. Go away and live anonymously and in peace.
The NY Times is saying she has withdrawn. I'm guessing that she found out that Paterson was not going to pick her and moved first. Paterson did say he had already made his decision yesterday.

Cuomo's office had some big settlements in the last two weeks that I believe were timed to maximize his profile to be named senator.

Reports conflict on end to Kennedy's Senate bid (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28780112/)
Family source tells NBC News that she has not withdrawn her name
Several newspapers reported Wednesday that Caroline Kennedy planned to withdraw from consideration for the Senate seat being vacated by Hillary Clinton, but NBC News reported that a Kennedy family source said it was not true.
The New York Times cited as its source a person told of her decision and reported that she called New York Gov. David Paterson to express concerns about the health of her uncle, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, who was hospitalized Tuesday after a seizure. A statement from Kennedy could come as early as Wednesday evening, the Times reported.
However, a Kennedy family source told NBC News' David Gregory that Caroline Kennedy had not withdrawn. Two sources hinted to NBC News that there may have been a miscommunication between Kennedy and Paterson's office.
