View Full Version : Has anyone else ever almost been killed by their XM radio?

In the before time I used to set the radio in my car to one of the predetermined stations and pretty much just let it be. Maybe I would change the station during a commercial, or if I didn't like a particular song that was playing. Back then it was a simple matter of blindly reaching down and pushing the pre-set buttons until I found something that I could live with.
Now, with XM, I can't stand to spend a second listening to something that doesn't interest me because I know that I have a hundred other choices, and I'm sure to find something better. So, I sit there and browse what's on all the stations until I find something that I can live with. Now, I'm a good driver but as we all know it only takes a second of taking your eyes off of the road to cause a catastrophe. I have drifted into adjacent lanes and onto the shoulder. Thank god there has not been a car or truck next to me to this point.
Today my wife screamed because she thought that I was going to rear-end a car that had stopped at a red light in front of me. As always she said that I've got to stop "futzing" with the XM. I think that she overreacted and that I definitely would have seen him and stopped in time, but deep down I know that she's got a point. But it's like an addiction that I can't kick. I'm afraid that's it's going to take an accident before I curb it. Anyone else do this? I guess admitting that I have a problem is the first step.

I can successfully control my XM, use a cell phone, and smoke a cigarette without wrecking.

My near death xm story comes from trying to read the artist of some obscure song while driving 85 mph on the highway.

When I rolled my truck three years ago, the myfi clocked me in the cheek.
Now I think about it, I was damn lucky. I had two pairs of scissors loose on the floor. Coulda been a lot worse. Now all instruments of destruction are secured.

This is starting to look disturbing. Maybe unregulated radio really CAN hurt people. I'm calling the FCC.

My radio is in 6 differant cars a week. I am constantly changing where I put the antennae wire, untangleing it with my garmin, and talking on a nextel. To make matters worse, I have a small short at the antenae connection on my roady. I would love to have the $ to place XM in all my bosses cars. It would be easier than watching for brake lights, speed traps, and bus loads of nuns in school zones. My xm hasn't almost killed me yet, but I'm sure it's plotting.

I don't know what you can afford, but with a quick search on Ebay I found that you can get 6 XM antennas for a maximum of $68. You can probably get them cheaper with more searching. Try Craigslist, too.

Many times - but worth the risk. And I think the family thinks its a great way to make the day interesting.

most dangerous is changing your fm modulation when the station you are using to listen to your xm through gets too staticy. On long drives i use headphones directly into my inno now

I'm usually ok with my preset buttons for music. My only near-death experiences happen when I'm trying to figure out which channel the Cubs game is on.

Thanks, the problem is I can't mount my antennas on the co. cars. That is a great price. I think I paid $30. to replace one a year or two ago.

mine went all transformers on me and grew arms. I learned it good. I pulled the plug. All it needed was electricity.

Yea, I heard X-mas music on yesterday, my remote had slipped off my center console, and I almost ripped it out of the dash while having a near miss on a couple old ladies. So I stopped, reached down to the passenger floor board and picked up the remote. I did nearly spill my beer though and that would of been the greatest tragedy because my cooler was in the back of the truck.
