Looks like I'm playing tourist next tuesday the 30th.
I'm taking the family to Philly for the day,(including the mother-in law)
Would like to see the historic sites, eat a cheesesteak, you know , etc..
Also Mendy jr would like to take a look at Penn and Temple, even though school is out,
just to see what the campus is like
Is all this doable in a day without going bonkers ?
Thanks in advance

I'd say so, Philly is really not that big... and it's also drivable and you are able to find parking...

Geno's for the cheese steak or the other place, don't go to the street vendors.

You could do the shopping on South St and get a cheesesteak at Jims.

Geno's or Pat's for a cheesesteak. There are actually other really good places to, but I'm not sure where they are at. But Geno's and Pat's are the most famous
I'm pretty sure you can see everything you want/need to in a day.

don't do the street vendors... Jim's steaks always has a long line... so I would find some real Philly people and have them recommend one that is less touristy

So much stuff to do.
Lots of historic stuff to see, like the Liberty Bell. You can go shopping on Market Street and South Street. There are shuttle tours that can take you around, and you can see some great stuff. Reading Terminal has some amazing restaurants there. Museum is nice to see, but going through it may eat up a lot of time.
I do not like Geno's for cheeseteaks. I've always been a Pat's Steaks guy, a cheesesteak that is messy and dripping. Tony Luke's is great too.

Tony Luke's is great too.
This is the best advice you can receive. Their flavor blows away the other guys, and there are plenty of other options there for those who many not be interested in steak. Big fan of the Roast Pork Italian.

I did Philly in a day in June with my wife and 2 kids and $4 a gallon for gas. It's very doable. We started in Camden @ the Aquarium and purchased the citypass. With the passes we received discounted admissions to the Franklin Museum and a Dinosaur exhibit that was nearby. We also got a discount for the red trolley and (like a hayseed) took the last tour of the area. The tour covers a lot of ground. I was back on Long Island around midnight.
I know it was easier because it was June, but I would go back today if I had a few bucks. If you do the aquarium, park in Philly and take the ferry to the aquarium. You cant park late @ the aquarium and the staff instilled a fear of the neighborhood. Have a great time.

FWIW. Temple is in a pretty rough part of town good school but tough place. Those PSAT scores got him thinking Penn. Good for him.

Forget about going to check out Temple. The last place you wanna go on a Philly visit is North Philly. And the staff at the aquarium wasnt joking about Camden. Theyll cut your throat for a nickel over there.
Stick to Independance Hall area, the Art Museum, Genos/Pats, South St., Franklin Institute, Italian Market, and the sports complex.

I'm not a fan of Pat's or Geno's. Abner's (http://www.abnerscheesesteaks.com) is the best (and it's right in university city, near Drexel and U of Penn). 38th and Chestnut.
Tip the guy at the flat top a few bucks when you place your order (very worth it).
They also have a huge beer cooler so you can have some suds with your sammich.
I'd make this the post"college walk-around" lunch stop. Then you can go onto look at the liberty bell or whatever.
...and if you see that guy who acts like he's really Ben Franklin, give him a cup check for me, k?

good advice there...Temple N Philly at night is kinda scary...cheesesteak-wise I vote for either Jim's or Tony Lukes as already mentioned

Do NOT hang around Temple. It is depressing, there are hoodrats and scum there, etc. Not something to go see to enjoy philadelphia. Stick around Olde City, Independence Hall, historic philly.
Camden is even worse. That's like garbage fuck central.

Just my couple of cents:
Do the Liberty Bell. Not sure what the new security or visitation rules are for Independance Hall, you might have to go there early to check it out.
Go to South Street as well, but I wouldn't recommend eating there much. However, make sure you go to Fat Tuesdays and try nothing less than their 98 Octane. Do walk all the way to the end towards the bridge over the I-95.
Head over to around 9th street for Geno's and Pat's. Do try both of their cheesesteaks and don't be discouraged by long lines, they move very fast. Also, before you order, make sure you know exactly what you're ordering and you know the lingo, otherwise they'll move you to the back of the line again...
Enjoy, Stoned!

know exactly what you're ordering and you know the lingo
Why'd ya have to go ruin it?!?1 :p It's funny watching outsiders get f'ed at for slowing the line down. hehe.
Whiz wit, Whiz wit'out. American wit, Provolone wit'out, etc. order your fries and drinks at the other window. Have money in hand, get the hell out of the way. You will be yelled at for being slow.
Think Soup Nazi. :p

I was in Philly about 18 months ago. I enjoyed City Tavern for a nice historic lunch.
My favorite bar was Monk's. Lots of good beer and food.
I enjoyed the tourist bus tour, too.
I want to go back to Philly sometime soon.
