Bruce has inked an exclusive distribution deal with Wal-Mart. It's the end of the world as we know it

He sold out years ago. Who else would walk into the RnRHOF without the band that put him where he was?

He's a walking cliche of Jersey.

He sucks. He has a good album and a few good songs here and there.

I'm a little surprised Wal-Mart is doing this. I mean, Springsteen is pretty much identified as a liberal now, and after "41 Shots", this might get a little heat from police groups too. And they've shown they'll fold under the slightest political pressure (at least from the right.)

I mean, it's not exactly like they're stocking Noam Chomsky's latest CD (which I'd probably rather listen to), but this does seem to be a little bit risky politically for them.

They have a lot of 'scandalous' things at walmart. I don't think there's much more to it than profit. Springsteen fans will eat this shit up.

I dunno though...this seems to be Wal-Mart much more officially endorsing the record than it is when they, say, carry Michael Moore's new book. They're actually kind of acting as the record company here. So there's much more of a stamp of approval here.

I don't blame the Boss for this, actually. Wal-Mart probably cares more about selling his records than the scumbags in the recording industry now. It certainly did work for AC/DC, too. Guns n'Roses, not so much.

Pretty goddamn funny. The Woody Guthrie of our time has turned on all his principles to make a buck. This is Bruce's way of saying "fuck the Unions, fuck Tom Joad, that Obama change thing...yeah this is what I meant...more money for us". "Patty & I are now gonna go roll around in 100's...enjoy you're unemployment checks" Ho Ho Ho

That's because GnR's deal is through Best Buy, not Walmart.

Didn't The Eagles do a Walmart-only CD too? It's not a bad deal for people or bands no longer on the pop charts

It'll be in all 10,000 of their stores (or whatever the number is), it'll be prominently displayed in the aisles in multiple places in every store, it'll be on their web site and they'll include it in the print, radio and TV advertising.

It'll be Springsteen's best selling CD in years, even if it is all ballads and odes to the downtrodden that nobody wants to hear.

The irony of selling 'the seeger sessions' at walmart really hurts.

Correct. One of my previous jobs was working for a record label that put out new music by classic rock bands. Cheap Trick, Deep Purple, etc. It was very hard to push the music because a lot of classic rock radio stations don't play new music by classic rock bands, and the regular rock stations don't want to play it because it's not in the right demos.

It's a damn shame.

So yes, Wal-Mart doing this helps out a lot. Springsteen doesn't get a lot of play outside of this area on radio, so it's a smart move.

Is Walmart doing just the distribution or actually acting as the label? I thought Bruce had a pretty tight relationship with Columbia/Sony.

Wow, I didn't read the article.

I thought Wal-Mart was being the sole distributor of the new album, "Working on a Dream". Wal-MArt is just distributing an Exclusive Greatest hits package, similar to what Christina Aguilera is currently doing at Target.

I take back my "ugh". This is a very, very smart move by Springsteen. I thought the new album was going out, this is actually just an appeal to new fans. Most real Springsteen fans have either his entire Catalog (which really isn't that many albums - 16 studio albums.

Crap, I just went back and read Bruce's wikipedia and starting thinking about Danny Federici and his last performance with the band and I'm getting sad. Shouldn't be sad on Christmas.
