That idiot from the Grind who got his start on the Real World is going to be on the VH1 reality show about has-been teen idols. Which is ridiculous since he was never really that known, but wasn't he a bit older than everybody even when he was on the Real World?

I've heard MTV2 is now just as bad as MTV when it comes to lack of music. Say it isn't so.

Even if they brought back videos, there wouldn't be anything worthy to air as only the teen pop and hip hop acts bother to make them anymore. Declining record sales aren't going to inspire record companies to spend the money on anybody else.

But you still have to be so-called "superstars" to get the budget to make them.

they should give you your own music channel where you choose the video and deal out the budgets for videos of artists you feel are worthy

Yea that make sense, cos it seems like they have a pool of about 15 artists they draw from.

Very few do.
They do the Rock Band video game now. There is way more money in that.

Only an estimated $700 million this year. (http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/130/mtvs-digital-makeover.html) Music videos can kiss their corporate ass.

And no extra costs - they just license the songs.

The acquisition of Harmonix (Rock Band) was a shrewd move and we shall see how it effects MTV in the future. MTV has already gone to shit; well we'll see what happens.

I've work in the business for a long time. It's simple - videos do not bring in ratings - ratings bring in money - no ratings, no money.
No matter what "video" channel there is today, in order for it to survive, it has to bring in acquisitions or original programming.
If you want to see videos, you'll have to go to the internet.

That's exactly it. Back when MTV was first introduced, everybody would watch for hours and hours. It was the only place to see music, as even the late night talk shows still didn't really like music acts other than the lounge-y Vegas-ish stuff. But after a few years, the magic wore off and other TV outlets were booking music. It got even worse as the record and radio industries consolidated, so fewer acts were even given a promotional budget.
MTV discovered that the Real World and other shows like that would draw more viewers, so we're now stuck with a channel full of reality shows programmed for the tween crowd.

The thing is, there's a lot of great videos out there. They're just all on Youtube or the bands' web sites.
I'll let Jello take it from here.
