Are most homeless people drunk because they're homeless, or are most of them homeless because they were drunks? I know if i had no other option I would be constantly fucked.

For most it's the former.

Think about it. You have lost everything! You carry your belongings in a hefty bag from the shelter to the soup kitchen. Begging for money and cigarettes along the way.
The state has taken your children. You literally have nothing. It is a kind of escape from the cold and harsh life you have been thrust into. Talk about rock-bottom. I have taken the time to talk to some of the homeless. Their stories are all pretty sad.
And it's not just alcohol. Marijuana and crack are favorites as well.

There is also a too-high percentage of mentally ill. They just fall through the cracks of the system and wind up on the street.

There is definitely room for improvement but our efforts are pretty noble compared to many other nations.

If we can diagnose, treat and house these people then perhaps it'll help to alleviate some of our other social problems.. ie, overcrowded jails, homelessness.

They're usually mentally fucked, then drunk, its usually a symptom of the problem not the root problem. And its states who suck a bag of dicks at taking care of their mentals. Getting released from Bellview/Prison and dropped at a bus station in queens is not the proper way to handle shit.

my guess is that they somehow got to be homeless and then become drunks

although im sure there are plenty drunks who then became homeless b/c of it
